Auburn's Sister...Magnolia or Eleanor?

We are in the early stages of adopting. We want to settle on our top two names for each gender.

Potential brothers will be MJ, [name_m]Mack[/name_m], & [name_m]Hank[/name_m].

Daughter #1 will be [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] [name_f]Posey[/name_f] ________.

We originally had [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] & [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as potential first names for daughter #2. We also had [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] in the middle name slot only.

We got a lot of feedback on our choices from NB, and we decided both names were too common to be paired with sister [name_u]Auburn[/name_u]. We decided to consider [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] as a first name again. Then, our of the blue my husband suggests [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. (I love him so much.)

So, now we’re kind of back to the drawing board on combos.

First name options for DD#2:
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]-I love this name so much. We would call her [name_f]Nora[/name_f] or [name_f]Elle[/name_f].
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]-DH’s favorite, but I love it too. I love the nn [name_f]Mia[/name_f], but our best friends’ daughter is [name_f]Maria[/name_f], nn [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. So far, DH likes [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] & I like [name_f]Lia[/name_f]. Other nns? Are [name_m]Mack[/name_m] & [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] too close? Also, if your familiar with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] University (our [name_f]Alma[/name_f] Mater & reason for loving the name) you know that there is a famous street on campus called [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Ave[/name_f]. If you aren’t familiar, those two names have no connection, but [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] fans would definitely see it. Doesn’t bother us, really.

Middle Names:
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]-honors my mom whose middle name is [name_u]Kay[/name_u]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]-honors DH’s mom, [name_f]Carol[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]-honors my Grandmother [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] (DH hates [name_f]Aveline[/name_f], I love it.)
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]-honors several people in our lives including our kid’s prospective godmother

What are your thoughts? Is [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] & [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] or [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] & [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] better?

Any combo suggestions with these names? We are open to different middle names. All of our children will have two middle names.

*last name is one syllable, starts with G, and rhymes with times.

Thanks so much!

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] make a fun, spunky sibling set. I picture girls/women that are bubbly, full-of-life, friendly.

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] sound more like siblings to me, I agree [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is too common to pair with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and they have similar sounds. I like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].

Another vote for [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] both feel modern, whereas [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is more traditional to me. [name_f]Meg[/name_f] could work as a nickname for [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f].

I vote for [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. Nn([name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_m]Mackie[/name_m])

I think [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] go well together, and I like the combo [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is just about perfect with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u]!

As much as I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], I think it’s quite different stylistically from [name_u]Auburn[/name_u]. In my mind, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] would be a sister to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], but not to [name_u]Auburn[/name_u].

I also prefer [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u]. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is also lovely, and though I don’t think “matching” needs to come above all other considerations for siblings, I do feel [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] make a beautiful pair! And I find the connection they both hold to your [name_f]Alma[/name_f] Mater really charming (I like how it’s not something those outside the community would recognize, so it doesn’t feel overdone either).

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] makes a lovely combo, and is my favorite out of the possible middle names you listed.

Are you totally set on [name_m]Mack[/name_m] as a boys name? [name_m]Mack[/name_m] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]/[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] do sound a bit similar. If [name_m]Mack[/name_m] is also a nickname (or could also be called MJ? Would that be the same name, or another boys’ name?) then I think there’s no problem, because you can use full names for one or the other if you find the nicknames to be confusingly similar (and they may not be!).

But as an alternative if you’re not entirely sure about [name_m]Mack[/name_m] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] as siblings would be [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. While [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is less rare than [name_u]Auburn[/name_u], I think the sounds of the two names complement each other well, and with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] [name_f]Posey[/name_f], both sisters would have a flower middle name and a connection to your university.

Best of luck with your adoption and your soon-to-be-growing family!

Thanks so much for your reply.

We are 100% on [name_m]Mack[/name_m] and it’s a standalone not a nickname. He will be named after my DH’s late godfather. MJ will be short for [name_u]Mason[/name_u] [name_m]John[/name_m]. He will be the 4th, and share the nickname with my husband’s grandfather.

Should we choose [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], we will probably settle on a different nickname for her. I definitely like the suggestion of having [name_f]Posey[/name_f] & [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] in separate sets as floral names. [name_f]Posey[/name_f] is my maiden name, and that’s our primary reason for using. But, I love the connection with [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] too!

Currently, this is what we’re thinking.

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] [name_f]Posey[/name_f] & [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] with second middle names TBD.

Thanks again so much for your input!

lovemysweeties-Thanks so much! We really do love them both!

silkypumpkin & sarah1800-Thanks for the suggestion of [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]! Its a front runner right now!

18_25-We love [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. Great suggestion.

stellarevolution-thanks! We love [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. We like the idea of each set having a flower ^ color name!

sbw-Thanks so much! We agree that stylistically, [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] & [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] are more suited together. I just have a hard time giving up [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]!

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] 100% they fit the best as sisters

If you love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] most of all, then use it. As halloween_jacqueline said, the names aren’t required to match! They’re different styles, but there’s no law against it.

If you do use [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], could [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] be a middle name?

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Posey[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] [name_f]Posey[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
and
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “[name_f]Emme[/name_f]”

or

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] [name_f]Posey[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
and
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “[name_f]Emme[/name_f]”

Right now our these are our top choices. These are the 6 names we love the most. I know the flow might could be better with different names, but I feel pretty confident in these choices.

Thoughts?

I certainly think you could choose either pair. I love the name [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] yet do think [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] looks lovely with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u].

Somehow I like [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] and [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] together as well.

Good luck!
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]

[name_u]Auburn[/name_u] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] as a sibset makes my heart melt. So pretty.

For a middle name, I really like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].

I love the name Eleanor, but I think Magnolia fits better with Auburn. I like that they’re both colour names (without being obvious about it).
I love Hazel but I’d probably avoid it with Magnolia (both are trees and colours, and it seems a bit much to me). Auburn Hazel is also a bit contradictory (colour-wise).
Might Ava, Ave, Avella or Eva work for Aveline?

I initially misread Kay as one of the names you’re considering. I think it’s nice to have some shorter names to choose from, especially with 2 middles. Kate might wotk, too.

Some ideas:

Auburn Elizabeth Kay/Kate & Magnolia Caroline Posey

Auburn Posey Caroline & Magnolia Katherine Ava.

Auburn Eva Caroline & Magnolia Posey Katherine

Auburn Elizabeth Posey & Magnolia Eleanor
Katherine

With Charlotte for Carol (and switching up the firsts):

Katherine Magnolia Charlotte & Elizabeth Auburn Posey

With a ‘Posey’ equivalent for Magnolia
:

Auburn Posey Elizabeth & Magnolia Petal Katherine/Caroline/Avella

All the best of luck for the adoption.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is beautiful but [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] fits better with [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] imo. I love [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].
