Audric?

I’m due in 3 weeks with a brother to [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] (and [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] whose name we didn’t choose due to adoption). [name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I both really like the name Aury, but it seems to have pronunciation issues outside our area, and we don’t like that the gender is unclear. I found the name [name_m]Audric[/name_m] on Nameberry, which we both really like for a long form of Aury. He could use it on forms and emails where he wants his gender to be clear, but could be Aury to those who know him. Pronunciation in our area would be like [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] without the D—or like [name_u]Army[/name_u] without the M (these sound identical to me). I understand that various regions will pronounce the Au- differently, and I’ve decided that doesn’t matter much because lots of words and names get pronounced differently in various regions and that’s just the nature of local accents. [name_f]My[/name_f] question is…well first, general thoughts on Audric/Aury? Secondly, with the way we pronounce it, it sounds like ODD-rick. If you heard it without seeing it, would you hear the ODD sound and think that’s how it’s spelled? I don’t want people thinking his name is Oddrick. Maybe this question also comes down to regional accents and how that sound is perceived.

I’m from [name_u]England[/name_u] and would pronounce it more like Or-drick.

Funnily enough, [name_m]Audric[/name_m], [name_u]Army[/name_u], and Odd are all pronounced completely different for me!

I personally wouldn’t mistake it for Oddrick. [name_m]Even[/name_m] with your pronunciation I’d assume [name_m]Audric[/name_m] I think.

It’s a cool name!

I like Aury as a nickname, although I agree it looks a little odd on its own! Have you thought about [name_u]Ori[/name_u]? It sounds the same (at least, in my accent it does) but it looks easier to pronounce and to me a little more “legitimate” because of its similarity to [name_u]Ollie[/name_u].

[name_u]Ari[/name_u] would be another option! I think because of how they look, both [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_u]Ori[/name_u] could work on their own, without a full name.

That said, I don’t think [name_m]Audric[/name_m] is bad. It’s basically [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] but with a -ck ending, and I’ve not heard of any Audreys getting Odd-rey comments, so I wouldn’t worry about that. The name overall isn’t for me, but it’s by no means a bad choice!

Would you be interested in other full-name options for Aury (or [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_u]Ori[/name_u], if like the idea of them)?

[name_m]Audric[/name_m] is cool and unexpected, and I think Aury is nice as well!

AUD and ODD sound identical in my accent, so I do see your concern. However, I think people will be more likely to just ask how to spell it, as Oddrick would be quite…odd. I think describing it as similar to [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] will help it feel more familiar.

I had to read some of this out loud because in my Aussie accent, Audrey and Army are not at all the same - took me a while to get them as the same A (and therefore Audric to sound like Oddrick).

Anyway, I would probably going for the name Aurick rather than Audrick to avoid the Oddrick thing - and I find Audric possibly too heavy. Other options for Aurey are Aurelio, Aurelian, or Aurelius, and maybe at a stretch Austin or August, which might better suit Alexandra and Miranda. You could even use a middle name starting with R to make a stronger connection -if you are using a name that is AU but no R in the name - Eg Austin Richard or August Rafferty with nn Aurey/Aury.

Or else I would just use Aurey with a classic masculine middle name - Aurey Benjamin, Aurey Peter etc.

Edit: I just realised I spelt it Aurey not Aury by mistake. Aurey is a real name, I’ve just discovered - a Latin boys’ name for Golden. There’s also Auri which is a Finnish name for earth/clay etc. if you choose to go for simple Aury (no long mane), you may wish to use one of these spelling options to link to these name meanings.

i think Audric is cool! i really like the nn Aury too.

haha same, i had a hard time trying to figure out the sounds!

I think it is quite cool! I love [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] and [name_m]Fredric[/name_m] (any spelling), so I am definitely a fan of that ending! I didn’t hear “odd,” since the d flows right into the r for me.

I think it’s a sweet name - it has [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] vibes for me.

Seeing it written, the pronunciation of ODD-rick is very clear to me. I could maybe see someone guessing a longer O sound (OH-drick), but I assume the prevalence of [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] would prevent much confusion. (I’m in the U.S. for context.)

If I heard the name without seeing it, though, I would ask for the spelling. (Once spelled, I would think, “Oh! Of course.”) If left to attempt the spelling on my own, I would guess [name_m]Audric[/name_m], [name_m]Audrick[/name_m], or maybe Odric as a non-phonetic spelling. Spelling it Oddrick wouldn’t be my guess, even though it makes sense phonetically.
