August for Walter's (Walt's) baby brother?

We have an unmistakable [name]German[/name] last name. Our first son is [name]Walter[/name] [name]Clayton[/name] (goes by [name]Walt[/name]) and we’re having a hard time coming up with one for our other son who will be here shortly! At the top of our list is [name]August[/name], nn [name]Augie[/name] or [name]Gus[/name]. Questions I have -

  1. What are your honest opinions of [name]August[/name] and how it goes with [name]Walt/name?

  2. [name]Do[/name] you associate [name]August[/name] with being a [name]German[/name] name (I’m surprised how many people I talk to [name]IRL[/name] don’t think this is a [name]German[/name] name)? We don’t have to have a [name]German[/name] name, but all the men in our immediate and extended families have very [name]German[/name] names - [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Carl[/name], [name]Johann[/name]. Mostly, I’m just curious whether this strikes people as being a [name]German[/name] name?

  3. What are your honest opinions of [name]August[/name] [name]Sutton[/name]? [name]Sutton[/name] is another family name, but I don’t like the two S sounds together?? Can’t decide but husband really wants to use [name]Sutton[/name] as mn. Last name is two syllables with no S’s or T’s.

Thanks for sharing any thoughts you have!

First off, I think [name]Walter[/name] ([name]Walt[/name]) [name]Clayton[/name] is very handsome and his brother needs an equally handsome name. To answer your questions:

  1. I love [name]August[/name] and it’s nn [name]Augie[/name] and [name]Gus[/name]. [name]August[/name] sounds like a down to earth guy, very masculine and the nicknames are adorable and work at any age. I think it’s perfect with [name]Walter[/name]. [name]Augie[/name]/[name]Gus[/name] and [name]Walt[/name] are so cute together!

  2. I know [name]August[/name] is of [name]German[/name] origin but when I hear or see the name it’s the last thing I think of, I just think it’s a very masculine handsome name. To me it doesn’t ‘scream’ [name]German[/name] in the way [name]Johann[/name] does.

  3. You’re right about [name]August[/name] [name]Sutton[/name] not sounding quiet right. The S and T sounds in both names make it tricky to say. Also since your last name is also two syllables, all three names will have the same number which imo doesn’t give the best flow.

[name]Hope[/name] this helps!

I like it! We have a [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] and are struggling with a name for our 3rd son, who will arrive this summer. I love the name [name]August[/name] with the nn [name]Gus[/name] and haven’t thought of [name]Augie[/name] as a nn and now I like the name even more!

[name]August[/name] is the [name]German[/name] form of the Latin variant [name]Augustus[/name]…so it definitely has a [name]German[/name] ring to it. Although I agree with the previous post regarding the S and T and the double syllables for all three names doesn’t quite flow. That said, imo, how often are the first and middle names used together? He’ll mostly be known by [name]August[/name] [name]Clayton[/name] or [name]Gus[/name] [name]Clayton[/name] or [name]Augie[/name] [name]Clayton[/name]. All of which sound perfect. I especially like [name]Gus[/name] [name]Clayton[/name]. It rolls off the tongue so nicely.

I love the name august! For some reason augustus sounds more german than august, even though I don’t think augustus is even a german name. To me, I think of the month of august, but I love the name. [name]Gus[/name] sounds german to me, but I like the nn auggie best. It reminds me of the new melrose place (the one that got canceled). I believe one of the guys in it was named auggie (I don’t know what his full name was). Anyhoo, I think it’s a great name and has that german heritage without being in your face about it, which is ok. I think it would be perfect for you, I really do, and it goes great with [name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name]).

[name]Walter[/name] [name]Clayton[/name] and [name]August[/name] [name]Sutton[/name] go great together. The ST at the end of [name]August[/name] and beginning of [name]Sutton[/name] cancel each other out a bit and sound more like Augus [name]Sutton[/name] when you say it, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, how often do kids full names get pronounced and its not a major problem I think it sounds nice and flows well enough. Especially since your husband really likes [name]Sutton[/name]. Go fot it! (I don’t think of [name]August[/name] as [name]German[/name], it’s definatly Latin in origin, it probably sounds [name]German[/name] because of a character in [name]Charlie[/name] and the Chocolate Factory who is [name]German[/name] and named [name]Augustus[/name] Gloop (sp?).)
