August or Augustus?

Which do you prefer? A lot of people don’t seem to like [name]August[/name] because apparently “it’s a month, not a name” and [name]Augustus[/name] is pompous or something. I really like [name]August[/name], but find that off nameberry, people don’t see it’s appeal.

I love [name]August[/name] and [name]Augustus[/name]; both are fine names.

Honestly I am not a huge fan of either, but on the name cloud weeks ago, I saw [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Blue[/name] sitting there, and it made me swoon a bit for [name]Augustus[/name] for the first time ever. I think though, that if I were choosing, I would be more likely to go with [name]August[/name]. [name]April[/name], [name]May[/name] and [name]June[/name] are all months, and make perfectly suitable names. I also know a [name]December[/name], which is less accessible, and there’s also [name]January[/name] [name]Jones[/name]!

I had both on my boy’s list, but chose [name]August[/name] over [name]Augustus[/name] when I was trying to shorten my list. I love both names, but I prefer the simpler [name]August[/name]. They are both fine names imo. I don’t consider [name]Augustus[/name] pretentious and even though [name]August[/name] is the name of the month, it is still a good name.

My great-grandfather’s name was [name]August[/name]. I think it’s a great name. What about [name]Augustine[/name]? It’s less pretentious than [name]Augustus[/name], I think. Honestly, when I hear [name]Augustus[/name], I think of the overweight boy from [name]Willie[/name] Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I also think of [name]Augustus[/name] Gloop from [name]Willie[/name] Wonka!

Personally, I’m not into either name, but [name]August[/name] would be the better choice to me.

I don’t love either of them, but I prefer [name]August[/name] ([name]Augustus[/name] is a little much). Either way, I think that Auggie and [name]Gus[/name] are both cute nicknames.

I like them both. TBH I’d go with [name]August[/name] over [name]Augustus[/name], but [name]Augustine[/name] over both.

[name]August[/name] was a name before it was a month

I love [name]August[/name]! It’s so regal and handsome. I have it as a MN on my list, but I would love to meet a little [name]August[/name]. Somehow I don’t really associate it as the month when it’s being discussed on name forums–it just seems like a really regal, handsome name. Plus, with its usage on Covert Affairs (and I’m assuming other shows–[name]Gus[/name] is being used on other shows, anyway), I don’t think [name]August[/name] is that out-there/weird. Certainly more acceptable than some other months, like [name]October[/name] or [name]January[/name] or [name]November[/name], all of which I’ve heard seriously considered (or actually used).

[name]Augustus[/name] is regal and stately, too, but I just find it’s too much for me. Anything but [name]August[/name] is just too much for me, haha. I like [name]Augustine[/name] and [name]Augusten[/name] and [name]Augusto[/name], too, but the only one I would use is [name]August[/name]. MAYBE [name]Augusto[/name], but that’s really pushing it.

[name]Love[/name] [name]August[/name] - seems very regal and distinguished.

I, too, think of [name]Augustus[/name] Gloop when I hear [name]Augustus[/name]! I think it also might be…a bit too much name.

I quite like [name]August[/name]. I agree that [name]Augustus[/name] seems a lot to live up to, especially given that he was one of the more activist [name]Roman[/name] emperors.

There was a pre-Civil War abolitionist I admire whose first name was Anglicized to [name]August[/name] from Anshl. He fought against slavery with [name]John[/name] [name]Brown[/name].

[name]August[/name] is enough of a name that it’s never been OFF the Top 1000 boys names in the USA since 1880. https://nameberry.com/blog/classic-boys-names-how-to-choose-one-thats-truly-timeless It’s under “more classic than we gave them credit for.”

It’s got some history and it’s not just Berries who like it, then!

I love [name]Augustus[/name]! Such a strong, handsome, and beautiful name!
