August vs Abraham

I THINK my partner and I have narrowed our options for baby boy down to two names. (He’s so picky. I don’t know what to do with him sometimes.) If it was my choice alone, our son’s name would be [name_m]Prosper[/name_m].

Currently, we’re debating between [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]. We both love each name but he’s leaning more towards [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] and I’m on the [name_u]August[/name_u] side.

Honestly, I would love to hear some talk about each name. Opinions, how you view the person wearing it, popularity of each ([name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is 180-something and [name_u]August[/name_u] is 314-ish). Does popularity bother you?

I know I’ve posted a few times before talki g about different name and I’m so appreciative of those that took the time to help out.

Thanks!

I love [name_u]August[/name_u]! [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is nice, but I like it nowhere near as much. I don’t know why it’s never much appealed to me, but it really hasn’t, and then the only [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] I’ve known I wasn’t a huge fan of, so I still don’t see the appeal. :frowning: I like the tie to [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], but I like [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] more as an honor name for him, and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] (and all his options) just seem a bit lacklustre to me. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]August[/name_u] though–the way it reminds me of St. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], the way it reminds me of falling leaves in the middle of a forest (although I’m not sure why–that comes several months later!), the nns Auggie and [name_u]Gus[/name_u], the intelligent vibes it gives off, even the ties to some things in pop culture (I love, for example, Auggie [name_m]Anderson[/name_m] from the TV show Covert Affairs)… I just think [name_u]August[/name_u] is great. I have it on my own list as a middle, and I’d love to meet a little [name_u]August[/name_u] (or Auggie, or [name_u]Gus[/name_u]!) one day. I think it’s perfection.

Good luck!

Personally I definitely prefer [name_u]August[/name_u]. I absolutely love it, mainly because of a character in a book I read (Wonder by R.J. Palacio). It comes across as energetic and enthusiastic, whereas as [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is more vintage and serious (not a bad thing). Only downside with [name_u]August[/name_u] (for me) is the possible nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u] which I dislike about as much as love the name in full (though I adore Auggie as a nn). The lower popularity is another plus (way below top 1000 in the UK, so I love it even more!) although 180-ish isn’t very high for [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] either. I love [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] too by the way! [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] & [name_u]August[/name_u] would have made amazing brothers!

Good luck!

I love all the options (including [name_m]Prosper[/name_m])! [name_m]Gun[/name_m] to my head, I would pick [name_u]August[/name_u], but I do love [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] or [name_m]Abram[/name_m] with nickname [name_m]Bram[/name_m]. Maybe [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] [name_m]Prosper[/name_m]?

I’d probably have to pick [name_u]August[/name_u] as well, even though I also like [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] a lot! I’m absolutely in love with [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], though…I think I might like it even better than just [name_u]August[/name_u]. I also adore [name_m]Prosper[/name_m]! I’d love to meet a little [name_m]Prosper[/name_m]. I think it’s such an interesting and refreshing name to see.

But yes, probably [name_u]August[/name_u].

Hmm…

[name_u]August[/name_u] & [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] are great choices both are handsome and have a lot of spunk. I think for me popularity doesn’t come into it and I don’t think you should determine your choice on popularity because why sacrifice a favourite of yours for the sake of other people liking it. Also in regards to schooling my little brother [name_m]William[/name_m] (a top 10 name in UK) is the only [name_m]William[/name_m] in his school whereas there a three [name_m]Kuba[/name_m]'s (which isn’t a top 10 name) so it completely depends regarding that side of thinks. So go favourites and don’t concentrate so heavily on popularity.

For me I think it depends on when the child is going to be born. I wouldn’t have an [name_u]August[/name_u] born around Hanukkah/[name_u]Christmas[/name_u] time as I feel this is strange or having an [name_u]August[/name_u] born on a snowy day. Whereas I think an [name_u]August[/name_u] born in spring/summer time would be swell. Whereas I feel [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is a great classic and sounds very strong.

I love both so for me it depends when the little one is born : )

[name_u]August[/name_u] all the way. [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is either hopelessly Biblical or hopelessly historical to me, although it does have a nice sound. It’s a bit too formal, clunky, overwrought. [name_m]Abram[/name_m] is much more suited to my taste.

I love [name_u]August[/name_u], because it’s a lovely, soft yet strong boys’ name with a great meaning and rich history. To me, it is associated with some extremely interesting and inspiring historical and religious figures, namely [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and St. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], but the shorter form of the name is much more manageable. (And I called [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] overwrought! Look at [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]!)

It is also the name of the main character of one of my favorite children’s books, The People in Pineapple Place.

The only downside is the nicknames. I passionate hate Auggie and dislike [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. However, perhaps you like them, and if you don’t, I don’t think they’re unavoidable.

I really like [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]. They both have great nicknames such as Auggie and [name_u]Gus[/name_u] for [name_u]August[/name_u]. [name_m]Abram[/name_m] and [name_m]Abe[/name_m] for [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]. If popularity is a factor then go with [name_u]August[/name_u] because it’s less popular. But, I feel [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] will age better : )

Another vote for [name_u]August[/name_u]. I love [name_m]Abe[/name_m], but [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is a bit long. However, it’s a great name.

I would have to pick [name_u]August[/name_u]. I prefer [name_m]Abram[/name_m] if it were an option.

They are so different! I see the appeal in each.

[name_u]August[/name_u] is spunky and familiar and comes with the best nn of [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. Auggie is also cute. I feel like it’s a trendy name, since I know no one by this name over the age of 5yrs. It’s risen fast. I’m surprised to see it’s so much less-used than [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] in the US. I know two little Augusts and no Abrahams. I think it’s totally dependent on area. Plus I see it so much on Nameberry, but I think that’s a bubble world.

[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] has roots, it’s solid and noble and religious, but used enough so that it doesn’t need to be all religion. It comes with the sweet nns [name_m]Abe[/name_m] and [name_m]Bram[/name_m] and Hammy. I can picture this name on any sort of man, formal and casual. I have met Abrahams of all ages (but don’t know any kids by the name.) So to me it’s timeless and that always tips the scale for me. I don’t like names that will carry the generation stamp on them, which I do fear for [name_u]August[/name_u].

Both of these names were on the final list for my little guy born in [name_f]October[/name_f] (ended up going with [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] though). I equally love [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] and their nicknames [name_m]Abe[/name_m]/[name_m]Bram[/name_m] or Auggie/[name_u]Gus[/name_u]. I think [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] flows better. You can’t go wrong either way.

I really like [name_u]August[/name_u] and don’t mind popular names for boys as long as they aren’t in the top 50 or so.

Thank you everyone! [name_m]Reading[/name_m] these replies has helped a lot. We have some thinking to do but I’m sure I’ll be happy with either.

My thoughts exactly

I love [name_u]August[/name_u]! It’s one of my favourite names and has been for a long long time. I’m not very keen on [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] but I do really like [name_m]Abram[/name_m].

We have very similar tastes in names! My three year old is named [name_m]Abraham[/name_m], and we have chosen [name_u]August[/name_u] for our next child if we have a boy. We mostly refer to our son as [name_m]Abe[/name_m], though we wanted him to have a formal, full, traditional name for documents. It’s such a great nickname–sweet and old fashioned (we have gotten quite a few [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] mementos from friends  We haven’t met another [name_m]Abe[/name_m] in any of our circles. I’ve also only met one [name_u]August[/name_u] who is now 8 years old. I prefer the full name of [name_u]August[/name_u], though [name_u]Gus[/name_u] is awfully cute too. I think that either name would be a great pick.

I love both of these names equally. Both carry a depth and weight that is quite appealing and bring strength of character and intelligence to mind. [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] seems a little more stoic than [name_u]August[/name_u]. I too enjoy [name_m]Abram[/name_m] over [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] (alleviates that stoicism I mentioned, to me). Great nicknames for both. Hmm…

I think you have a real tie on your hands!

I like [name_u]August[/name_u]. I think it’s a great name and gives the cute nickname option of [name_u]Gus[/name_u].

I have an [name_u]August[/name_u] and an [name_m]Abraham[/name_m], so I don’t think you can go wrong with either :). My [name_u]August[/name_u] is mostly but not always [name_u]Gus[/name_u], and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is usually [name_m]Abe[/name_m]. I was a little worried about [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]‘s popularity, relative to my other kids’ names, but we don’t run into other Abes any more than we do Augusts. One thing I’ll say that I’ve been a little surprised by is how much people seem to approve of/like the name [name_m]Abe[/name_m]. People act very pleased and mildly surprised when they hear his name as if they’re thinking, “that’s not something I would have thought to use myself, but I really like it.” Universal approval is not something I’m used to in my baby naming  I think the unwieldiness of the full name keeps people from using it (although we call him [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] more than we expected to), but [name_m]Abe[/name_m] is really an enormously appealing nickname. With [name_u]August[/name_u], people tend to like the full name fine, but either love or hate [name_u]Gus[/name_u].
