Aurelia Poll: Am I The Only One?

For my whole life, I’ve pronounced Aurelia as aw-RELL-ya, however nameberry lists pronunciations as “Aw-REEL-ya” or “a-Ray-lee-a”. Have I been pronouncing this wrong, or is it just my accent (I’ve grown up in the Northwest of England). Does anybody else say it like that, or is it just me?

How To Say Aurelia
  • Aw-RELL-ya
  • Aw-REEL-ya
  • A-Ray-lee-a
  • I hate all of these

I’ve always said it OR-reel-ee-uh I think, it’s a bit hard to spell it out phonetically

I’ve never actually heard this name pronounced, but think it would be said “Aur-ell-ee-uh”, in which case I think it is a pretty name. However, if it’s pronounced like like it’s only three syllables, I wouldn’t like it. (I’m from [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]York[/name_u] state)

I’m from the US and I hear [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] pronounced like uh-REEL-ee-us so I pronounce [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] similarly

Au-REEL-ee-uh is how I would pronounce it in [name_f]English[/name_f] (notice the gliding vowel). Otherwise I would say it Aur-Ë-lii-ah ([aʉ̟ːr-eː-liː-a]).

I also agree with this pronunciation, as to me it feels more natural to say it with the ell sound in the middle, and (for me anyway) requires less effort to say rather than the other two ways.

i think it’s versatile !! i always used to pronounce aurelia aw-REEL-ee-yuh and hated it, and then when i discovered it can be pronounced aw-RAY-lee-uh, that 100% clicked with me - i find the sound a lot more pleasing, and it’s also a lot easier for me to say. in my accent, the first syllable gets dropped a bit so it’s more like uh- than aw- (very much like your third option). i don’t think any of the options are wrong though, it’s just different conventions !! <3

eta: i’m a classics student and would say the latin aurelius/aurelia (e.g. marcus aurelius) like uh-RAY-lee-us too

I pronounce it uh-RELL-ee-uh, but I voted for aw-rell-ya since that’s closest

I’m in the US and have always heard uh-RAIL-ee-uh, which is almost identical to uh-RAY-lee-uh for me.

The only Aurelias I’ve met in real life have said it uh-REE-lee-uh (4 syllables) so that may be an option??

I tend to say o-REE-lee-uh in [name_f]English[/name_f]. The RELL pronunciation reminds me of the Spanish pronunciation and I want to say ow-RELL-ya instead.

Aw-real-ee-uh ? Maybe I’m just weird…

I say distinctly four syllables. “uh-RELL-ee-uh”

Have always said it as four syllables - Or-reel-ee-ah or Or-rell-ee-ah. I know some say “ray” for that second syllable (as per NB site) but I haven’t heard it like that in real life.

I say aw-RELL-yah or aw-RELL-ee-ah, but in [name_f]English[/name_f] (not my native language) I’d say aw-REEL-yah.

I say Aw-RAY-lee-uh, like a mix of the first and third. And I’m from the Midlands.

I say Aw-ree-lee-ya

I voted “I hate all of these” for lack of a better option. In Italian, Spanish, and Polish, it’s ow-REH-lya (rolled R), and that’s the pronunciation I use. [name_u]Or[/name_u] ow-REH-lee-a.

I’m in the UK, and have met two Aurelias - one Aw-reel-ee-uh and one who was aw-ray-lee-uh, but said quickly, it could blend into aw-rell-ee-uh - I can imagine accents would create a slight variation too :person_shrugging:

In my native language (Finnish) I’d pronounce it OW-rell-ih-uh. When speaking [name_f]English[/name_f], aw-REEL-ya would be my first guess!
