Aussie Berries - how do you say Beatrix and Beatrice

I love [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] on paper but when I say them my tongue seems to just flip out!! When I suggest the name to friends they look at me as if I’m crazy.

I think they both sound awesome with an English accent. [name]Do[/name] Aussies butcher this beautiful name?

So tell me how you pronounce these names and also how you think most Australian’s would pronounce them. [name]Do[/name] you find them hard to say?

[name]Kinda[/name] like Be-er, rather than be-a. I open up on [name]Beatrix[/name] more though. It’s more like Be-a-trix and [name]Beatrice[/name] is Beer-triss

I have to agree with this. This is exactly how I would pronounce [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Beatrix[/name].

You don’t really hear this name much in Australia. But I would definitely consider [name]Beatrice[/name] for a future daughter!

Thanks.

It’s when I try and say Be-a instead of Be-er that I have trouble. It doesn’t flow naturally for me to [name]Beatrice[/name] if that makes sense.
I don’t think I like [name]Beatrice[/name] pronounced Beer-triss though.

I agree with the above pronunciations. My cousin has a two-year-old daughter named [name]Beatrice[/name] and nobody thought it was weird! I think it’s a lovely name.

I love [name]Beatrix[/name]!
But as an Aussie I agree that our accent doesn’t do these names justice. They end up almost sounding like beer-trix & beer-triss

I’m a Kiwi not an Aussie, but I don’t think our accents are that different. I have no trouble saying [name]Beatrix[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name] and don’t think it sounds bad, however I’ve never heard it said in a British accent so prehaps it sounds wat cooler, and I’m just missing out, =(

Im from [name]Sydney[/name] and named my 9 week daughter [name]Beatrix[/name]. I pronounse her name bee-ah-trix. But i find that some people pronounce it bee-trix. Its an unsual name, especially in oz. Some people mistake the sound of beatrix as beatrice. But it doesnt bother me!
Watch the trailer for the movie mrs potter, they say the name beatrix a few times.

I was rather confused at first, as I was unaware that the name had various pronunciations, but I understand how many might combine the first two syllables into one. Infact, I have found that a lot of people here in Australia ‘simplify’ names by contracting them to have less syllables (take any longer name ending in -ia, for example…it’s often -yah, rather than -ee-ah. Hell, even our country’s name we typically pronounce -yah!).

Personally, I say be-ah-triks and be-ah-triss, and while I’m not a huge fan of either, I don’t entirely dislike them. I must say though, that I do greatly prefer Beatrix, because it has more zest to it, and that’s more my kind of style.

I think that Australian’s might baulk at the name do to its sense of age and strong British feel, but after the initial culture shock, I feel like most would ease into it.

Both the US and the UK accents seem to pronounce names, and words in general, with much more attention to each letter, whereas Australians tend to go at them like a bull at a gate, skip a few syllables and unfortunately, take out any of the words delicateness and charm, you know? At least, that’s what I’ve noticed.

[name]Beatrix[/name]: [name]Bee[/name]-trix
[name]Beatrice[/name]- [name]Bee[/name] (with a very very quick ‘ah’ in between)-triss

I say them [name]Bee[/name]-a-triss and [name]Bee[/name]-a-trix - and find them quite difficult and awkward to say! If I was in a rush/feeling lazy I’d probably revert to [name]Bee[/name]-triss and [name]Bee[/name]-trix.

We have an 18 month old (aussie) named [name]Beatrix[/name] and we call her [name]Bee[/name]-[name]Trix[/name]. Most people pronounce it this way, though some say Beer-[name]Trix[/name]. I’ve never noticed anyone adding an extra syllable, [name]Bee[/name]-ah-trix. They do tend to flow into one another and become Beer-trix when you try!
However I would pronounce [name]Beatrice[/name] as Beer-Triss.
I do have to correct a lot of people who mistake her name for [name]Beatrice[/name]. It’s nice that [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] has made the name common enough that people have heard it, even if they don’t know anyone called [name]Beatrix[/name].
Occasionally people who have read her nickname ‘[name]Bea[/name]’ pronounce it ‘Be-ah’ (like [name]Mia[/name]).
I love the name and love the nicknames [name]Bea[/name] ([name]Bee[/name]) and Beattie.
Good luck!

I’m a Kiwi who lives in [name]Oz[/name] and are due in a few weeks with #3, gender unknown, and if a girl her name will most likely be [name]Beatrix[/name]. Hubby and I both pronounce it [name]Bee[/name]-trix, we pronounce [name]Beatrice[/name] the same way, [name]Bee[/name]-trice.
