🇦🇺 australian 2022 baby name data!

the australian baby name data from last year came out this week, so i thought i’d share it with the berries!

you can read the full report here: Baby names report 2023 - McCrindle (you do have to enter an email, but as far as i am aware this isn’t used for anything except to send you a copy). i highly recommend having a look especially if you live in aus as it breaks down the trends + statistics for individual states.

the top 10:

girls boys
charlotte oliver
amelia noah
isla leo
olivia william
mia henry
ava jack
matilda theodore
ella hudson
grace charlie
willow luca

this marks the 10th year in a row of oliver being #1 (and i’ve met so many, so this definitely makes sense)

twelve names joined the charts: remy (73), roman (83), alfie (87), reuben (89), koa (96), louie (97) and tommy (99) for boys, and eliana (86), thea (91), margot (94), maisie (97) and gracie (99).

the top 100s:

personally, i’m surprised that ariana is so low, and dropping, as i feel like i hear it everywhere. i’m kind of disappointed that reuben has joined the top 100 and mia is still firmly in the top 10, but i’m going to take it as validation of my good taste :relieved:

also, the fact that they have the data from below #100 to see how far a name has risen, but choose not to publish it, annoys me just a little

what are your thoughts?

Here’s a link to the report without need to sign up, I think it’s the report: https://mccrindle.com.au/app/uploads/reports/Baby-Names-Report-2023.pdf

I’m struck by how enduring Aussie top names are! I meet so many kids called names like Darcy, Kai, Tyler, Reign etc, just to use boys as the eg, but it seems the Top 10 very solid!

How very annoying indeed!

I find the Australian top 100 really interesting - it shares a lot with the UK, but the names are kind of cooler, bolder, if that makes any sense.

Intrigued to see Darcy in the top 100 for boys too!

thank you for sharing! tsk australia, make it more accessible

i knew oliver was popular, but i didn’t know it was that popular, 10 years :see_no_evil:
but noah still up there, oh my

theodore and ezra are still new in my mind, this popularity surge is twisting my head (i might be just jealous)

harvey was the most surprising for me, but hey, that’s fresh at least. or not, because it’s on the list.

also a bit surprising the only not super english common name was muhammed?

other than that, shout out to hallie :raised_hands:

i’ve become that person in love with the top popular names, i guess. i just realized the least popular name on my list now has become… nicholas?? :no_mouth:

Ahh I wish australia released more than the top 100!!

It’s interesting to see how close [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] are! Same with [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] and Piper… wow there are more close names together than I thought. [name_f]Margot[/name_f] + [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f] + [name_f]Maeve[/name_f].

Hazel’s popularity surprises me a bit, I’ve only met one, whereas I have met more than three Maya’s. I would have [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] would be a higher, I’ve met so many!

Others that I’m surprised are as popular as they are… [name_u]Peyton[/name_u], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_u]Willow[/name_u] (I know it’s been in the top 10 before but I’ve never met one, and I’ve only heard of one), [name_u]Harlow[/name_u] & [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]

Now for the boys, wow, [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] in the top 10??? I know of one, but he’s a teenager.

I’m surprised that [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] is in the top 50, as well as [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]. [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] ranks higher than [name_u]Charles[/name_u], and [name_m]Archie[/name_m] ranks higher than [name_u]Archer[/name_u], but [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ranks higher than [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_u]Ali[/name_u], [name_u]Elia[/name_u] and [name_u]Ari[/name_u], seems to be a trend with short names ending in i.

Some others I find surprising are [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and [name_u]Tommy[/name_u] (i would have thought [name_m]Tom[/name_m] would be higher).

It’s interesting that [name_u]Remi[/name_u] ranks for girls and [name_u]Remy[/name_u] ranks for boys, because I’ve met boys called [name_u]Remi[/name_u] and girls called [name_u]Remy[/name_u] but not the other way round.
