Australian Name list

Does anyone know where I can find the Australian equivalent of the US social security name list? Or a least a top 100? The more recent the better.
Hubby and I are talking about trying for a baby, and being the name nerd that I am, I have already started thinking about names! I want to make sure the names that I like don’t end up being too popular.
Thanks!

Hey Penilou! I’m Australian too, and would also love to know. I can only find data for some of the states. [name]Pam[/name]/[name]Linda[/name] - any idea on where we could find this info? Can anybody else help?

I looked in one of my recent baby name books and they gave this website info. I hope you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for on it. Good luck!

Thanks [name]Mischa[/name], that gave me a great starting point! That website is for SA, but it led me to find the other states too. I will put the link to the search page and the top ten for boys and girls for each state for the most recent year available. if there is a number after the name, that is how many were registered for that year.

This is where to find the Top lists for each year.

Australian Capital Territory
There doesn’t appear to be a listing for ACT, but given it is only one city there wouldn’t be that many names registered each year anyway. And from the search I did, it looks like the names may be registered in NSW anyway.

I can’t find a list for Tasmania either. I found the BDM page, but there was no list of popular names

South Australia
This is from the link from the PP.

Another tricky one to find. I was actually interested in this one to see if the high proportion of Aboriginals influenced the naming choices.

Thanks [name]Viviana[/name]!!
I have gone through the names and done a little bit of analysis for anyone who’s interested (I’m really taking the name-nerd-bull by the horns!)

Names that appear in all top ten list
[name]Jack[/name] (top 3 except ACT), [name]Lachlan[/name], [name]Thomas[/name] and [name]William[/name] (always top 3)
[name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Chloe[/name] (top 3 except WA), [name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name]

[name]Joshua[/name], [name]Oliver[/name] & [name]Riley[/name] and [name]Ella[/name], [name]Emily[/name] & [name]Ruby[/name] appear in all but one and [name]Mia[/name] in all but 2.

[name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Max[/name] only appear in SA. [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] only in the ACT. [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Jessica[/name], [name]Joseph[/name] and [name]Mitchell[/name] only in the NT.

Queensland’s top boy name is [name]Cooper[/name] and he only appears in two other states (at 5 and 10). All the other states had [name]Jack[/name] or [name]William[/name] as their top boy’s name.

It constantly amazes me how similar baby name lists are from around the world. There is one noticeable exception that is pretty unique to Australia and that name is [name]Lachlan[/name]. Maybe our Aussie Nameberries can explain why this name pops up? Is it all because of [name]Rupert[/name] Murdoch’s son or is there another celebrity that I’m not aware of that has added to the popularity of this name Down Under?
