I’ve known some people with some of these names that don’t shorten them— a just-Jessica and a just-Alexandra, for instance, and these choices don’t seem to be issues nor should they be— but these are definitely patterns I’ve noticed.
I’ve taught a few of these who don’t shorten their names and people just don’t shorten their names. Not sure if that’ll last to adulthood but I try and encourage us using whatever form of the name people like - so have had lots of long names with no nicknames.
In my experience, names that tend to ‘come’ with a nickname.
[name_u]Florence[/name_u] - [name_f]Flossy[/name_f], [name_f]Florrie[/name_f], [name_f]Floss[/name_f], [name_f]Flo[/name_f]

Alllllll the [name_f]Evie[/name_f] names (Evelyn, [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] etc.)
I have a friend [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] who makes a large effort to go by [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] but gets [name_m]Joe[/name_m] by everyone. [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] “Chris”, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] “Alex”, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] “Matt”, [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] “Ben”, and [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] “Zach” are some that come to mind
I thought of…
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or [name_m]Alec[/name_m] (I don’t know a single [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] who doesn’t go by a nickname)
[name_m]Timonthy[/name_m] - [name_m]Tim[/name_m] or [name_m]Timmy[/name_m]
[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] - [name_m]Ben[/name_m]
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and other [name_u]Chris[/name_u]- names - [name_u]Chris[/name_u]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - [name_u]Nick[/name_u]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] - [name_m]Josh[/name_m]
I’m a [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], sometimes given the nn “shelley.” I have a VERY negative experience with a [name_u]Shelley[/name_u] in my childhood so that automatic nn is forbidden
