Aveline Pronunciation

I know there are several threads for pronouncing [name_f]Aveline[/name_f], but I wanted to make one more specific to my question.

I love the way [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] looks. I had always been a fan of [name_u]Avery[/name_u], but it started becoming way too popular for me. [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] has the “[name_f]Ave[/name_f]” but seems a lot less used, at least for right now. It’s various meanings are also great, especially its tie to nature, as that creates various possibilities for sibling sets.

Our main concern with the name is how to say it. There are various different ways to say this name, and I’m not sure which one I like best, as well as which one will be most commonly said. I’m afraid of giving my child a name that’s too unique/that others struggle with, especially since I dealt with this to some extent growing up and it got rather tiring.

I personally like the sounds…
1.) “Av-lyn” as in Avenue
2.) “[name_f]Ave[/name_f]-lyn” as in [name_f]Ava[/name_f]
3.) “Av-eh-lyn” as in Avenue
4.) “[name_f]Ave[/name_f]-eh-lyn” as in [name_f]Ava[/name_f]

I am aware that the original pronunciation would me more similar to “[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-ve-leen” but the “leen” ending never grew on me, especially since we have several names ending in “leen” in the family already.

I also think that in school, most people would probably read it as “line”, like “[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]”. When I first read the name myself, I read it as “[name_f]Ave[/name_f]-line”. While I don’t prefer it, do like the sound of that as well and think it could make her life a lot simpler.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think asking for the “lyn” ending would be too confusing? All the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]'s I know do use the “lyn” but I’m still a little worried about her constantly having to say “lyn, not line”. I have an extra E in my name, and correcting it gets very frustrating.

Also, of the 4 pronunciations I gave, which do you like the sound of best?
And do you prefer it said with “line”?

Thanks!

I would say “[name_f]AYV[/name_f]-lyn” to sound like [name_f]Ava[/name_f].

I said, ava-line when I saw it,.?..Avilyn, Avilynne, Avilynn, Avilinne

I would think it’s [name_f]Ava[/name_f]-[name_f]Line[/name_f].

I would say Av-uh-line, like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] with a V.

Bumping this up because my questions haven’t been answered yet

I know an [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] and it is pronounced [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-vuh-leen like it would be in [name_m]French[/name_m]. People mispronounce it as [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-vuh-line sometimes. I think you’d be better off spelling it [name_f]Avalyn[/name_f] or Avelin to get the pronunciation you want.

Of your pronunciations, I personally prefer AV-e-lyn (mostly because I don’t like the name [name_f]Ava[/name_f]). I think [name_f]Avalyn[/name_f] would be a better spelling, however, because as you addressed before, the -line ending can be said three different ways. I like the name [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] as well (with the -leen ending) but I am also worried about pronunciation issues, which is why I suggest the alternate spelling. I’ve never liked the sound of -line endings pronounced like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], so I prefer the -lyn ending, between the two. I hope that answered your question.

Av-uh-line

I also love this name but pronounce it [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-vel-leen. I think the ‘lyn’ is a bit of the stretch, she would likely get ‘leen’ or ‘line’ first everytime.
For the name you’re trying to achieve I would definitely go with the spelling Avelyn or [name_f]Avalyn[/name_f]…since its a totally different name really.

I switch between ay-va-leen and ah-va-leen when pronouncing [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. I like them both equally.

Of your pronunciation list, I think ave-eh-lyn is my preferred one.

And to answer your ‘line’ question, I seriously, truly hate pronouncing the -line of names like the word line. I prefer lyn/leen by a landslide.

When I look at this name here are the pronunciations I think of first:

  1. Av-uh-line (like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f])
  2. Av-uh-leen
  3. [name_f]Ave[/name_f]-uh-line (like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] for the first part)
  4. [name_f]Ave[/name_f]-uh-leen

To be honest I did not think of “lyn” until you mentioned it in your post, so I would join the others in encouraging using a different spelling if you want the “lyn” sound

[name_f]Avalyn[/name_f] would lead me to [name_f]Ave[/name_f]-uh-lin
Avelyn would lead me to Av-uh-lin

To answer your question about which of your suggested pronunciations I prefer, I have a definite preference for the three-syllable choices, but I’m not entirely sure if I prefer the [name_f]Ave[/name_f] or Av sound at the beginning, but I think I lean towards “Av.”

I think my favorite overall is [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] pronounced Av-uh-line.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps!

I would pronounce it Ayv-uh-leen; like Maybelline (makeup company) but Av- instead of Mayb-. I agree with others who said the -lyn ending will give you the sound you want without confusion.

I’ve always pronounced it and prefer ave-uh-line.
