Aviva: Cultural Appropriation?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is inappropriate for a caucasian, non-Jewish person to use the name [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] because of cultural appropriation?

I used to think it was no big deal but I’ve been considering [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] recently as a distinct possibility ([name_f]Goldie[/name_f] is a family name) and the more “real” the idea becomes, the more I worry about the possible downsides of the name.

Thanks all!

I am not Jewish. But I do not see [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] as a Jewish name, for me it’s the name of my insurance company actually…
[name_f]Aviva[/name_f] appears to be a Hebrew name of no serious cultural significance? Correct me if I am wrong… I think you would be safe to use it, in the same way an English person can use an Irish name with no one batting an eye, I don’t see this as cultural appropriation. I hate how PC everything seems to need to be these days.

I’m not Jewish but I think that it would be perfectly fine. Tons of people have names that originate from a culture that they have no connection to. As far as I know the name doesn’t have any cultural significance (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong to any Jewish person reading this!), so I think it’d be fine for a non Jewish person to use it. I think it’s nice that you’re taking the time to double check though. I would hate to use a name that turned out to be offensive.

I really love [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] by the way! I’ve been crushing on it lately. I love it’s meaning.

I had no idea it was appropriated.

I grew up in a heavily Jewish area but knew quite a few non-Jewish girls named [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] - No one ever seemed “offended” by it. I too think of the insurance company and the [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] Stadium here in [name_m]Dublin[/name_m] where I currently live. With that being said, I really really love the name!
