Awful Nicknames

[name_f]My[/name_f] name gets shortened to Hail ALL the time - ugh.

A few I know:

[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] - Lozza
[name_u]Cruz[/name_u] - Cruzer (le cringe)
[name_m]William[/name_m] - [name_u]Willie[/name_u] (I know a little boy who goes by this, shame it’s a male body part in [name_f]England[/name_f])
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] - [name_f]Fanny[/name_f]/[name_f]Franny[/name_f]/[name_u]Fran[/name_u]
[name_u]Stacey[/name_u] - [name_f]CeCe[/name_f]
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m] - [name_u]Josie[/name_u]
[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] - [name_u]Kenzie[/name_u]/Kenz
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]/Dizzy

Awe… I kind of love it. When I was in 5th grade our teacher was engaged to a guy named [name_m]Graham[/name_m] (prn: [name_m]Gram[/name_m]) for whatever reason she refused to tell us his last name so we just decided she was going to be Ms Crackers for the rest of the year. She thought it was funny… ([name_m]Graham[/name_m] Crackers).

Oooh, poor [name_u]Dana[/name_u], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], and [name_f]Amy[/name_f]… I’ve never heard of a children’s show called Lazy [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], is this only in Australia?

Apparently I’m not up on English slang: I thought [name_u]Willie[/name_u] was a nice, although common, name. To an American ear, I feel this screams nothing more than innocence… ([name_m]Don[/name_m]'t feel obligated to explain. I can only imagine, and frankly, I don’t want to know! Thanks for the heads up!!)

Personally, I’m not keen on [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] nor nn [name_u]Fran[/name_u]/[name_f]Franny[/name_f]; however, one of my favorite heroines from an old-fashioned book forever turned my heart towards [name_f]Fanny[/name_f] nn [name_f]Fan[/name_f]. I love this and wish it could be as sweet today as it was back then! Sadly, a little [name_f]Fanny[/name_f] today would only be known as “[name_f]Fanny[/name_f]-Pack”… Ugh.

[name_f]CeCe[/name_f] isn’t an awful nickname either (not one I couldn’t live with, that is), although I’d much rather get to it via [name_f]Celia[/name_f]… I got a little sweet on that name after meeting an adorable 2 yr old who couldn’t stop running up to and smiling at my husband last summer on the beach (needless to say, my husband loved it too). Her name was [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] (which I’m not too crazy about, especially knowing its awful meaning is “blindness”!!), but reading a Nameberry blog not long ago about simple [name_f]Celia[/name_f] really swayed me towards it, not away.

That’s too cute! Reminds me of my freshman Algebra 2 teacher (Ms. [name_u]Pepper[/name_u]) who married another of my teachers (Mr. Hazeltine - freshman Civics) a few weeks before school… They just continued using her maiden name throughout the school-year so as not to confuse the students and parents because we had only just learned her name. By the end of that year, she ended up being Mrs. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]-[name_u]Pepper[/name_u]. Lol.

[name_f]My[/name_f] former students call me Mrs. Macaroni since they knew be by my maiden name and wouldn’t begin knowing how to pronounce my married!!

@Iwillpraise I think it’s British. I’ve never known an [name_f]Amy[/name_f] called lamy amy but it works. All the ellie’s I know get smelly ellie.

And here willy mean dick and fanny means vagina, its what I always thought it was called

[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]- [name_u]Les[/name_u] for a girl its torture

I once met a tween [name_f]Izabelle[/name_f] that went by the crude nickname ‘Jizzabelle’. Um… yeah.

[name_f]My[/name_f] brother [name_u]Sam[/name_u] got called [name_u]Salmon[/name_u] a bit in grade school. He hated it!

[name_f]My[/name_f] dad has somehow pulled Tadpole out of [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] and every time my brother mentions the name my dad says Tadpole.

Actually, [name_u]Willie[/name_u] is known as a term in [name_u]America[/name_u] but not generally used. [name_f]Fanny[/name_f] isn’t though, it’s a term for rear end which isn’t great but isn’t quite so bad.

I was just thinking this, as my current favorite girls name is [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] and the song, while a fun song I like definitely isn’t something I’d like said to my daughter with the sexual connotation. To a certain extent, you just kind of have to let it go because kids will be made fun of and some of these people have listed I personally consider rather tame and wouldn’t let that stop me. I do have a line I don’t want to cross though, like with [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]. Also:

[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]

Doughy [name_u]Joey[/name_u] is one that no one has mentioned.

[name_f]Hester[/name_f]/[name_m]Chester[/name_m] the Molester - [name_f]Hester[/name_f] the Molester is from “A Prayer for [name_u]Owen[/name_u] Meany” but when I was in elementary school there was a kid who was a little bit older who was called [name_m]Chester[/name_m] the Molester.
Germy [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] the Fluke
[name_u]Chris[/name_u] the Priss
Any boy’s name that can easily be changed into a girl’s name - ex [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] for [name_u]Kyle[/name_u], [name_f]Christina[/name_f] for [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], etc. I feel like I heard that kind of thing a lot as a kid but it might be different now, with unisex names being more common.

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister-in-law is named [name_f]Lexy[/name_f], and her (now our) last name rhymes with hottie. So of course during high school she was always Sexy [name_f]Lexy[/name_f] Hottie ____. It never seemed like it bothered her though.

[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] -> Dillweed
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] -> Horny [name_u]Corny[/name_u]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] -> Witch [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_m]William[/name_m] -> [name_m]Willy[/name_m]
[name_m]Richard[/name_m] -> [name_m]Dick[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] brother and I ended up being Slobby [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] and [name_m]Messy[/name_m] [name_u]Jessie[/name_u].

Sigh.

I love [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], but…Astird. Sigh…

Thanks The Office for pointing that one out!!!

You might like to look at this site for names you are considering. There is a section called “Considering this Name” and it has people who actually have the name answer a survey with questions like “Is it often mispronounced/misspelled?” They also ask if you were often bullied for your name and for a description of how.
