Ayla?

Hello berries!
A few days ago I started a thread about the name [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and we got mixed opinions (that’s why we asked anyway). Though [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is a very important name to us, some berries made a point that I had made before that maybe it would not match the “feminine” names our first two girls have or the “K-L” names we have, so we started brainstorming.
So, our first girl who’s almost four is [name_f]Kara[/name_f] [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]. Our second girl who’s almost one is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Our third girl who’s my husband’s little sister we’ve been legal guardians for a little while now and is 6 years old is [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] and is the reason why we are not so worried about following the “KL” thing we have going on. We are adopting a little girl soon whose name we got to choose and we’re having a bit of a hard time with it. We thought maybe we should go for a K, maybe we should go for an E, maybe we should keep it feminine, maybe we should keep it not-so-feminine and we just threw all of these ‘maybe we should’ away and sat down to simply make a list of names we love and go from there.
We came up with [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. [name_u]Grey[/name_u] being the girl’s grandpa and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]'s dad’s middle name “[name_m]Greyson[/name_m]” we wanted to honour. That way we’d keep a feminine name that would match [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]'s and a not-so-feminine middle name that would match [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]‘s.
I’d like to hear your opinions on the name. We go biased very easily, that’s how we named our first two girls if I’m gonna be honest, so we love to hear some other people’s opinions on the names we choose. Is it a good pick? Would it be too out-of-place with sisters’ names? We’d love to hear about it!

Congratulations! I am not entirely sure how to pronounce [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] (my first guess would be AY-la and then EYE-la) but I think both are very pretty names and sound nice with [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. Good luck!

I think you’re comment about throwing ‘the rules’ away is exactly right - choose a name you love! [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is beautiful and I think it fits wonderfully with the other names. Not to mention, if you decide to have more children, following ‘the rules’ that you have forced yourself into, is only going to become harder, so I think its a good idea to break the mold and pick something that goes with the sibset but doesn’t match everything exactly!

Anyways, my point is that [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is beautiful and I think its a great pick for your family

I adore [name_f]Ayla[/name_f], and I think it’s a great bridge between [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], which are more classic and feminine, and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], which is a bit more modern.

Thank you!! We’re going for AY-la. Though I do love the pronunciation EYE-la, I’d go for [name_f]Isla[/name_f] to get this one, which is also a name I absolutely love.

Thank you!! And oh, tell me about it! We totally intend on having more kids in the future, both my husband and I always wanted a house full of children and we’re on adopting mode now, from now on we intend on adopting more kids but we’ll wait a little so we can enjoy the early ears of the youngest ones a little more before we get another one. I hope we go for boys next time, my poor husband is gonna go crazy when all the girls hit their teenage years hahaha but the point is, it’s gonna be really hard to keep up with the K-L theme anyway, so why bother so much? Thank you again!!

Thank you!!! I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] your list so much.

I love [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]! I felt so bad bashing [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]–it seemed rather masculine to me after The Age of [name_f]Adaline[/name_f], and that’s where I first started to love it–but I definitely understood how it could seem feminine, especially with a Brazilian (yes?) accent? But I’ve loved [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] for years, and think [name_f]Kara[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] are absolutely darling together! ([name_u]Emmett[/name_u], too, but I think [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]'s much different from your own naming style because you didn’t get to name her, if that makes sense? I think [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] does tie [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] very nicely to [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], though!)

[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is a little short and sing-songy, but there’s nothing wrong with that, especially if you have a longer surname? I think [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]'s definitely a winner!

All the best!

I can totally understand that!! It’s weird how names change so much according to where in the world we are. [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is a 100% girls name back home, but here I can see how it sounds very masculine! Same thing goes to [name_f]Alison[/name_f] and it’s variations, it’s a girls name up here but a 100% boys name back home!
Our last name isn’t exactly long but isn’t exactly short either. It’s a two-syllable, 8 letters dutch surname, I think it goes perfectly in the middle of both. Thank you!!

So true! Is [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] usually a nn for another name, or a given name? I can TOTALLY see [name_f]Alison[/name_f] for a boy in [name_u]Brazil[/name_u], though, as I’ve met so many little Brazilian boys (or have come across them!) who have -son names! I actually knew a professor whose surname is [name_u]Allison[/name_u]; after hearing Dr. [name_u]Allison[/name_u] all the time, I can see [name_u]Allison[/name_u] on a boy, although most Americans can’t?

Are parabéns in order on finalizing a name, then? :stuck_out_tongue: I was in [name_u]Brazil[/name_u] last summer, and it’s a country so near and dear to my heart; I wish I had ties as close as you do! I’m attempting (off-and-on) to learn Portuguese, and sponsor two little girls in northeastern [name_u]Brazil[/name_u]. It’s such a beautiful country and the people are some of the nicest I’ve met in the whole world! :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh I love [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]! My husband and I love [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] (the Hebrew spelling we plan to use is [name_f]Eila[/name_f]) - we definitely plan on it as a middle name, but I love it as a first too! And as others have said, it really helps pull [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]’s name together with [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]!
