Ayra: how would you pronounce this?

We love the name [name_u]Ira[/name_u] for a girl but didn’t want the association with [name_u]IRA[/name_u] so are trying new spellings. Ayra is our favorite. But would you pronounce the “ay” part to rhyme with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] or [name_f]Layla[/name_f]? We also like Iyla and [name_f]Eira[/name_f] as spellings but less so…

Ayra I would pronounce ay-ruh.

[name_f]Eira[/name_f] seems like the logical alternative, imo it’s prettier than [name_u]Ira[/name_u] anyways.

Same, I would say it Ay-ruh, the first syllable rhyming with [name_u]Kay[/name_u] or [name_u]Ray[/name_u].

The suggestion of [name_f]Eira[/name_f] is excellent! I think it’s the best choice for you.

I’d say AY-ruh. I would go with [name_f]Eira[/name_f], as that can be either pronunciation. Plus it has a great meaning as an added bonus.

Yeah we do like it - although worried people would say “Eera”

Thank you for quick responses, we only have a few days/weeks left!

I see it as rhyming with [name_f]Layla[/name_f], but also be warned that at first glance it looks a lot like [name_u]Arya[/name_u]. Maybe it’s my lack of caffeine, but that’s what I read at first  I love [name_f]Eira[/name_f] though!

[name_f]Eira[/name_f] does seem to be ticking most boxes… can’t believe how much there is to consider. wish we had less weird taste!

I actually misread it as [name_u]Arya[/name_u] at first, but I’d pronounce it AY-rah.

Are you Irish? Is that why you’re worried about the [name_u]IRA[/name_u] association? I didn’t pronounce Ayra like [name_u]Ira[/name_u] when I pronounced it like AY (rhyme with lay)-[name_m]RA[/name_m]. I think [name_f]Eira[/name_f] is really pretty and seems like an Irish name but it’s not. [name_f]Eira[/name_f] means snow so that’s really pretty. I wouldn’t pronounce it Eera if I saw it.

I also think [name_f]Eira[/name_f] is the way to go, especially because I misread Ayra as [name_u]Arya[/name_u] and I probably wouldn’t be the only one to do it given GoT popularity.

I actually pronounced it like [name_u]Ira[/name_u], but only after I misread it as [name_u]Arya[/name_u]. So, even though I pronounced it the way you wanted, I wouldn’t go with that spelling.

[name_f]Eire[/name_f] is also quite beautiful and may be what you’re going for, although the pyonunciation is probably not intuitive.

I also misread it at first. Perhaps Eyra? I think that’s the way I’d be most likely to pronounce it correctly, though [name_f]Eira[/name_f] also makes sense. Any not-super-familiar name that starts with a vowel sound is always going to have some pronunciation issues because vowels are so ambiguous.

I would pronounce the first syllable to rhyme with [name_u]Ray[/name_u].

I would pronounce Ayra like [name_u]Ira[/name_u].

You should spell it [name_f]Eira[/name_f].

Ay is always pronounced as a hard ‘A’ in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u].

I prefer [name_f]Eira[/name_f] was the alternative spelling. I would pronounce Ayra as [name_f]Air[/name_f]-ra or Ai-ra.

I agree with the [name_f]Eira[/name_f] suggestions.
