I’m in Australia and yes it’s absolutely the first thought with [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] - as I’m sure it would be for Australians generally - and unfortunately the name is now just not usable here because of the terribly sad, prolonged and (now) emblematic story of grief, public witchhunt, injustice, trauma and loss.
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f] is good though and I do particularly like the nns.
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f] is lovely. It’s fresh and light, quirky and has a great sound. I really like the nickname potential of Zalie, too.
My thoughts exactly. As for the association wearing off a little within the next decade, well I’m not so sure about that either. It was such a widely publicised case that was, and still is, now 40 years after little [name_f]Azaria[/name_f]'s death, spoken and debated about. Unfortunately, I think the association will still be strong in even a decade’s time due to it being a very uncommon name, with such a negative association.
Definitely [name_f]Azalea[/name_f].
I actually prefer [name_f]Azaria[/name_f]… Sorry guys!
One of my close real-life friends is named [name_f]Azaria[/name_f]… And she’s Australian! She’s never had any issues with it, and gets SO many compliments on her name. I know an [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], an [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], and an [name_f]Azaria[/name_f], and [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] gets the most compliments.
I definitely don’t associate it with the Australian thing, (and I live in [name_f]Oceania[/name_f]!)
If you prefer [name_f]Azaria[/name_f], go with [name_f]Azaria[/name_f], but if you prefer [name_f]Azalea[/name_f]… Both names are beautiful!
(Although, as a final note, I associate the name [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] with the singer [name_m]Iggy[/name_m] [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], who is actually from Australia, go figure.)
I’m an Aussie and am in the minority and totally disagree with [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] being unusable. Yes, it was my first thought, but all names have some kind of negative associations if you look hard enough. What happened is horrible, but young people today have no frame of reference for the Chamberlain case, many don’t even know about it. I personally think it’s fine. As a kid, I had a stuffed tiger who I called [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] after the baby.
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f] is lovely and unique in it’s own right too!
