Baby #1

We are expecting our first baby. I have been following this site and the forums for awhile now, as I am slightly obsessed with names. For that reason, I am having trouble narrowing down and finding the perfect option. It’s a lot of pressure!

Criteria: We enjoy classic names. I am very close with my grandmother [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and he would like to honor his grandfather who passed, [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], if possible. [name_m]Both[/name_m] of our names our of Greek origin, multiple syllables, with 1 syllable nicknames. Our last name is 4 letters, 1 syllable, & starts with L.

Please try to only suggest a few actual possibilities, rather than just posting a long list of favorites… I can look at list on my own. I am looking for real input from other nameberries  Thanks!!

Well let me take a look at this then… Ok so your namesake possibilities are
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] which has a few versions [name_f]Margot[/name_f] being quite adored around here, personally I am a real fan of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. Origin of the name [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]: From the Greek Margarītēs, which is derived from maragon meaning a pearl.
And
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m] which has a feminine [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_u]Jo[/name_u], I actually love [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_u]Jo[/name_u] lots of family connections all around. 2 days ago a friend had a baby who’s middle is joseph and about half the boys and a few girls born at the local catholic hospital are given [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] as a middle name, do not let that dissuade you its not ‘common’ its just lovely and loved. Means God will increase.
So all that said I imagine posting in the baby names section and having a gender announced and posting a name for each gender? You are ‘team green’? ( you don’t know gender)I will suggest for both genders in any case. With Greek names and a short Greek last name you can likely do quite a bit in a wide range of possibilities… I would use names between 2-3 syllables to get a good flow and attempt to not repeat sounds to much. You could also use 2 middle names if you’d like since your names are long and last name is so short you’d have no trouble there at all.
Girl :
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
( avoid [name_f]Margot[/name_f] -accept as a nick name-if you pair in anyway with [name_u]Jo[/name_u] in anyway [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and Go are far too much together as a given name  )
Margarītēs [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] ’ [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]’ !!!
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] Margarītēs
Margarītēs [name_u]Jo[/name_u] L___
Here are a few suggestions that could be paired with either or both of these names as middle(s) I’m not going to write it all out though if you like one obviously you can play around with it yourself and see what works…
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f] - ok so its not a super popular name but I think its full of potential …
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]- classic and feminine due to the writer and I think there’s a movie from the 90s where a woman is named [name_f]Bronte[/name_f], I think its a Greek Surname and I feel like its fun and different I’m not sure so much exactly what you’re looking for so I’m going through the alphabet a bit…
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] - this is the name my father tells me to name my babies if they are girls… Its really grown on me, he says I could call them ‘[name_f]Callie[/name_f]’ , he’s a tough guy… His coffee table is made of knives :-/ so I think its really sweet that there is a girls name he likes enough to mention it and it think honestly its underused, I think it means beautiful voice?
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - for something classic and sweet and ‘cate’ is darling single syllable nn
[name_f]Delia[/name_f] or [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - fun and peppy
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - old school  had a great great aunt [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] called. ’ dot’
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] I think I just really like the way it flows but you’re L last name would have to be just right to not clash with anything I suggest that has an L syllable keep an eye on that
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] there are 2 ways to pronounce this Heh-leh-nah and Hel-en-ah I really like both honestly its funny because [name_f]Helen[/name_f] is such an understated demure name but [name_f]Lana[/name_f] for a nn and its just that -a that gives it a magical quality.
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] L___?
‘[name_f]Lana[/name_f]’ L____ just be sure it doesn’t sound like a super hero name  … Speaking of…
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]!!! Ok so you probably won’t use it but… I think if I were someone else [name_u]Hero[/name_u] & [name_f]Poet[/name_f] & [name_u]Story[/name_u] would be my children… So I suggest them to you as you are Greek and can at least theoretically get away with [name_u]Hero[/name_u]… I really like a certain Shakespearean plan…
Speaking of ‘word’ type names
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is lovely
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is short and sweet
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_u]Jo[/name_u]? If you’re looking for something short and delicate
[name_f]Narissa[/name_f] I know a woman with this name and I thought of you for some reason [name_f]Narissa[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] I think could be cute, its different, she’s in her 30s and I can’t say I’ve heard it anywhere else.
[name_f]Petra[/name_f] [name_f]Margarite[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] L__?
[name_f]Rebekah[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
( they just sound lovely with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] anyway)
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]- [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]'s meaning could be used instead? Like
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] <3 I know a young pearl with a sibling Iris, stunning children Iris Pearl I think pairs well as well.

For a boy!!!
Joseph honestly I would say if you have a boy give him the middle name of Joseph its a great middle name!! That said its also a great first name, Joseph Biblically saved the Israelites and is very pivotal and important. Joey or Joe both strong nns. Obviously jumble any of these around to your hearts content. I’m a bit worried I will be less helpful with the boys, I feel like I love a lot of Greek names and I’m trying to think of them with Joseph and realistically and also with the understanding that ‘Greek’ to me is a lot of biblical names as when the NT was written that was the ‘universal’ language so there are a lot of names that sort of have been angelicized a bit so you may or may not love these… Also personally I like Lysander… But I’m not sure it goes with Joseph or an L last name?
Aeneas Joseph ( maybe it depends on the repeating a sound and what your sn is…)
Anatole Joeseph L___
Alexander
Ander
Alex
Alec
Xander
Zander
Obviously someone was going to suggest Alexander
Alexander Joseph L___ ?
Andrew
Christopher
Elijah Hebrew but so is Joseph and they pair beautifully and I think could pull off a Greek sn, my Greek cousins have biblical/ welsh names and it works…
Levi
Lucas
Peter
Philemon ( I was thinking about this earlier and thought it might pair well with Joseph but you’d have to like Phil or Lee as nns)
( a few Christian names )

So obviously just because your names and sn is Greek you don’t have to use a Greek name but I think some names definitly go better with Greek surnames which are often lovely in and of themselves. Sometimes welsh names like Guinevere or French? Names like Juliette or even Charlotte could be quite nice. Just depends on exactly what you’re looking for. Hopefully I at least have given you a little something to think about? Congrats!!!

I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and think it would be a wonderful name to use. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] would be quite lovely for a girl (nickname [name_u]Jo[/name_u]) [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] would also work and I do like the nickname [name_f]Meg[/name_f]. If you want to save [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] for a future son, I like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] because of the Greek origin and the beautiful nickname [name_f]Eve[/name_f].

For a boy, I think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] would be lovely (and [name_m]Ted[/name_m] is a nice one syllable nickname). [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] also seem like great choices for you as well.

I’d go with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] ([name_u]Josie[/name_u]) or [name_u]Alexios[/name_u] [name_m]Dmitri[/name_m].

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_f]Josephina[/name_f], [name_u]Joey[/name_u], [name_u]Jody[/name_u]
