Baby #3 - looking for clunky boy names!

Hello, everyone! Just found out yesterday we’re having another wild baby boy!! I like old, but not necessarily dated (ie: Ned, Ted, Don) names.

Siblings:
Benjamin Leopold (goes by Leopold)
Clementine (passed away)

DH is pulling for Othello (I studied English, so we’re also drawn to literary names), and I’m liking Humphrey, not so sure on the nn’s though.

We have a while, but I like to settle names early. Any suggestions?

Also, this baby started out as a twin but lost their sibling along the way. Name meanings didn’t have much impact when naming DS1, but anything reflecting DS2’s strength or survival through this pregnancy will probably have a stronger pull… Thanks for thinking with me!

I’m sorry for your loss! I’ll just throw out some old man names I like for ya :stuck_out_tongue:

[name_m]Walter[/name_m] (all time favorite “old man” name!)
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Floyd[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] ([name_u]Alfie[/name_u] is adorable, same with [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]!)
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] (I know this isn’t technically clunky…but it always seemed old man to me)
[name_m]Norman[/name_m]
Eugine

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helped!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Claude[/name_u] or [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]? I love both names and they have such a pleasant clunkiness to them. Or, how about [name_m]Clive[/name_m]? (CS [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]'s name)…? I also like [name_m]Theron[/name_m]. Not quite as clunky but still nice.

I just looked up all those names and none have good meanings, though…

So sorry you’re not having twins. :frowning:
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] means twin, but since you want something a bit clunky, there is the Scottish form, [name_m]Tavish[/name_m].

Suggestions:
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Lowell[/name_m]
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Moses[/name_m]
[name_m]Darwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Lorcan[/name_m]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m]
[name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]
[name_m]Stellan[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]

[name_m]Othello[/name_m] and [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] are a bit much for me. I know a dog named [name_m]Othello[/name_m] and a rabbit named [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m].
Good luck!

I think [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], would be a great name. It’s clunky, goes with [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] and means "son of encouragement.

[name_f]My[/name_f] suggestions based on their meanings are [name_m]Angus[/name_m], [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]

[name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is my favourite of these four and I think it will go well with [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]

Going by the meanings listed on Nameberry…

[name_m]Arnold[/name_m] - ruler, strong as an eagle

[name_m]Bernard[/name_m] - strong, brave as a bear

[name_m]Brian[/name_m] - strong, virtuous and honourable

[name_m]Maynard[/name_m] - hardy, brave, strong.

[name_m]Leonard[/name_m] - brave lion

Good luck!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Otto[/name_m] or [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]? Similar to [name_m]Othello[/name_m] and [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]?

[name_m]Othello[/name_m] nn [name_m]Otto[/name_m], or just [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. (I think this is a great choice, even though [name_m]Othello[/name_m] himself might not be the best role model.)
[name_m]Dougal[/name_m]
[name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]
[name_m]Abner[/name_m]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m] nn [name_m]Al[/name_m], [name_u]Bert[/name_u], [name_u]Bertie[/name_u]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] nn [name_m]Walt[/name_m]
[name_m]Remus[/name_m] nn Rémy, [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
[name_m]Roland[/name_m] nn [name_f]Ro[/name_f], Roly
[name_m]Gerald[/name_m] nn [name_u]Gerry[/name_u]
[name_m]Jerome[/name_m] nn [name_u]Jerry[/name_u], [name_f]Ro[/name_f], [name_m]Rome[/name_m]
[name_m]Absalom[/name_m] nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m]
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] nn [name_m]Bram[/name_m], [name_m]Abe[/name_m].
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] (I love this name)

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] / [name_u]August[/name_u] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u], [name_m]Augie[/name_m]

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] nn [name_m]Art[/name_m], [name_m]Artie[/name_m]

[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (I love nn [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]!)
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Reynard[/name_m] ([name_m]Rey[/name_m])
[name_m]Tristram[/name_m]
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]
Sorry for any repeats!

I’m so glad I asked! You all have so many wonderful suggestions!! “Old man names” is probably the best description for my naming style, I suppose. Thanks for helping me narrow that down.

I didn’t realize [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] meant twin! [name_m]How[/name_m] funny… we were going to use that for [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], but switched at the last minute. Kind of thinking we’ve settled on a middle name for this babe! Is it weird if my son’s little friend (who we see all the time) is also named [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]? It wouldn’t be the name he’d go by…?

Anyways, here are the names I loved from your suggestions!

[name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] (sorry, I know you said you knew a rabbit named [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]! For some weird reason, that made it even cuter!! :D)
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m] (also love it for an [name_m]Othello[/name_m] nn! Good idea!)
[name_m]Alastair[/name_m]

And one of my own to add:
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] - I’m obsessed with the nameberry description of it! Is it too popular, though? I noticed it’s ranked #2 in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u]… The jovial grandfather imagery is too cute to pass up. And the [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde association is pretty apt, as well, as this boy looks just as spunky but quieter than his older brother (ie: bookworm? hopefully?)

Thanks for all the help!!

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]!
(but it might be a little “in the face” for those who enjoyed TFiOS)

I think [name_m]Othello[/name_m] [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] or [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] [name_m]Othello[/name_m] are cute combos, and you could always use [name_m]Otto[/name_m] as nn for [name_m]Othello[/name_m].

*Sorry if I repeated anything previously said, I didn’t read the comments since there were so many.

[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_u]Gus[/name_u]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Holden[/name_m]

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
[name_m]Gatsby[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_m]Truman[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Robinson[/name_m]

These are my best recollections from literary names, hope it helps!

What about [name_m]Truman[/name_m]? I almost used it for my son but felt weird about it because it’s my grandfathers name and he is still alive. NN ideas we had were [name_m]Tru[/name_m] and [name_m]Manny[/name_m].

I really like [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m], I’m not sure it could be any more than a GP for me though.
