Baby #3 Name Help!

Hiya,

We have recently been delighted to find out that bubba #3 is a GIRL!

We’re set on the middle name, [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] (Neeve) however we’re yet to find a first name that we really love.

She will be joining siblings;

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] ~ nn. [name_f]Rora[/name_f]/[name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] ~ nn. [name_u]Theo[/name_u]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_u]Finn[/name_u]

As you can tell we tend to like old fashioned names so names that can be shortened/nicknames are important to us to give a modern twist.

We’d really appreciate your suggestions!

Thank you :slight_smile:

Thanks to you both, some really lovely suggestions!

Violet and Eleanor have particularly stood out to us and have become strong contenders!

We’ve also found love for the names Margot and Willow, so what are your opinions on the following;

Violet Niamh ~ nn. Lettie Eve or Etta Eve
Eleanor Niamh ~ nn. Ella Eve
Margot Niamh ~ nn. Maggie Eve
Willow Niamh ~ nn. Lola Eve or Billie Eve

Which do you like better? What doesn’t work as a nickname?

Aurora was such an easy option the first time around so we’d
love to hear your thoughts to help our struggle! Lol.

Thank you :slight_smile: Xx

Ooh, they’re all gorgeous — I think any of those four would complement [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].

Nickname-wise, I prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. I like [name_u]Billie[/name_u], but I’m having trouble bleeding the -ie sound into “[name_f]Eve[/name_f]” (same with [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]).

Overall, I think [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] makes the best pair with [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], but you’ve got a winning list all around.

Thank you so much! You’re helping me out a great deal.

I’m totally with you on the -ie ending conflicting with [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]/[name_f]Eve[/name_f]. I’m in love with [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] as a combination but struggling with the nickname [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] and even more so [name_f]Etta[/name_f] that was suggested to us by a family member. It seems most of our other loves leave us with the same dilemma :?

[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_u]Finn[/name_u] just seemed to flow so naturally after [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] became an obvious nickname for [name_m]Bubba[/name_m] #1 ([name_u]Rory[/name_u] for her Irish heritage from my husband and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] from my grandmother) and I want that for our second little princess, too.

Hubby says I’m over thinking the nickname thing but, to me, it just wouldn’t feel right if her nickname didn’t flow - just as much as if the sibset itself didn’t. I certainly don’t want her to be the only one to not go by a nickname. I wouldn’t want her to feel left out or to not have a more modern name to go by while growing up. For instance, I can’t imagine [name_u]Theo[/name_u] being wanting to be called anything else while growing up… I love my children’s names and the fact that they’ll age well but you’ve got to give a kid a break! :lol:

We do love [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and the nickname [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] but we’ve been told that [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is a stretch of a nickname for [name_f]Willow[/name_f]… Grrrr!! :-x

Are only other though was the change [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] as a middle name… Keeping in with our tradition of an Irish middle name, we’ve come up with [name_f]Aisling[/name_f] ([name_u]Ash[/name_u]-[name_u]Lynn[/name_u]) (and [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] (Row-[name_m]Sheen[/name_m]) but having my heart set on [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], they fail in comparison. If we decide to ditch [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], however, we’ll be going with either;

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Aisling[/name_f] ~ nn. [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] ~ nn. [name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]

Ahhh… Lesson learnt to leave traditions out of naming children!! :lol:

(To compromise Niamh)
Willow Roisin ~ nn. Billie Rose or Lola Rose

Ahhh… Lesson learnt to leave traditions out of naming children!! Lol

Yes, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] flows so well, and I prefer it to [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Aisling[/name_f], especially since you have your heart set on [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]. Would you be opposed to a one-word nickname as a compromise? That way your daughter would still have a nickname like her siblings, but you wouldn’t have to settle for a nickname that doesn’t roll off the tongue. I have a friend who goes by a one-word and two-word nickname (something like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]/[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f]) and her older sister has a one-word nickname (something like [name_f]Lily[/name_f]). And despite the syllable mismatch, the names sound just fine together.

What about Vio, [name_f]Viv[/name_f], [name_f]Vivie[/name_f] or [name_u]Vinnie[/name_u]? (I love the last three because they pull sounds from [name_f]Niamh[/name_f].)

On another note, I don’t think [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is a stretch. If [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] can be nicknames for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], then [name_f]Lola[/name_f] should easily be allowable for [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. But if multiple people have told you otherwise, I understand being bothered by that.

Of your alternatives, I like [name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] / [name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I have a feeling you could eventually come to love it as much as you love [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] once your daughter is wearing it!

I really like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], it would be a shame if you had to give up on [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] just because of a nickname.
I like the suggestion of [name_f]Viv[/name_f] or [name_u]Vinnie[/name_u] for a nickname for [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f].

These names are a little bit of a mouthful but they are my [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] combinations:

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] (the [name_f]Eve[/name_f] sounds are different) nn [name_u]Evan[/name_u], Evany (made up but could work), [name_f]Eva[/name_f] or [name_f]Evie[/name_f] or even [name_f]Lina[/name_f]-[name_f]Eve[/name_f]

[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]: nn [name_f]Emme[/name_f]-[name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Mera[/name_f]-[name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f],
Other possibilities: [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]- [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Junie[/name_f]

I do like your combo of [name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_f]Roisin[/name_f]: [name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] if you decide to forgo [name_f]Niamh[/name_f].

As a side note, I truly believe nicknames can be as imaginative as you like. My name is [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f] but as as child I was called [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], Louby [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]-[name_f]Anna[/name_f] and that changed to Caz, Car and Cazza as I got older.

Either way all your choices are lovely and you will find one that fits I promise.

You’re both very helpful and right too! I know that I’m over analysing the nickname thing… I think I’m just looking for the ‘click’ that we had when naming our other two children. We knew they were right in every aspect and even when going though other options as back up or whatever, they just didn’t compare.

[name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] is growing on me more and more… [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_u]Finn[/name_u] does sound quite adorable! [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] will keep calling out to me though! Lol. We’ve dwindled it down to those two anyway… It’s progress, I guess!

I agree, lulu82 - we do have other nicknames that we, in the family, and friends call the munchkins that have come from things they’ve done, said - mispronounced, etc. I just think because it’s already naturally occurred with our first two, it would be odd not to have it with this baby. Also, I’ve always liked the name [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] but hubby totally vetoed it! Lol.

Ceryle, I do like Vieve as a nickname as I would shorten the name to [name_f]FiFi[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Vi[/name_f] or [name_f]Viv[/name_f], as they aren’t my cup of tea, so it would fit well. I also agree about [name_f]Lola[/name_f] being a nickname for [name_f]Willow[/name_f] - I mean it’s [name_m]Will[/name_m] - Low… Not much different from getting [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] or [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] from [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], in my opinion, but the disgruntled look on my mum’s face said otherwise… Lol.

Thank you for both for all your help and listening to my silly rambles / worries! As much as I love my laid back husband for teaching my over analysing nature to chill out a bit sometimes (or at least making me realise I need to), it’s nice to hear opinions rather than “We love them all, it won’t matter which we choose” lol.

You’re welcome, and best of luck! [name_f]Violet[/name_f]/[name_f]FiFi[/name_f] is adorable, but if you can let go of [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely and would fit perfectly too. So I think your husband is right — whichever name you go with, you’ll have picked the right one, with a great nickname to boot :slight_smile:

Thank you! Annoyingly, my hubby does tend to be right… But we’ll never allow him be aware of that fact! :wink:
