I like this idea, and I like the idea of honouring your history.
Keala is lovely, but it will come with confusion. This is likely with any Hawaiian name you choose, however.
Some other Hawaiian suggestions that might be less confusing and are super pretty:
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Kailani[/name_f] ( I like that this means sea and sky…kind of connects to [name_u]North[/name_u] and [name_m]Hawk[/name_m] as well, being a nature name)
[name_f]Kalea[/name_f] - similar to Keala, but has a brighter meaning ([name_f]Kalea[/name_f] means “joy/happiness”; Keala means “path”)
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps…
Thank you [skfgn[sadkfng;dkfb;dlf b
I think Keala is a pretty name and I like the idea of your kids’ names being linked. Pretty cool.
I have to say, with no background I would have assumed it was [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] but with a kre8iv spelling, which is a shame because it’s a really beautiful name now that you’ve explained its origin and pronunciation.
I like @esita’s suggestions, especially [name_f]Kailani[/name_f] because of its distinctive sound and lovely nature meaning that just seems to tie in so well with her brothers’ names.
[name_m]Koa[/name_m] is another lovely one. It is listed as a boys’ name on NB but it could certainly work on a girl too [name_f]IMO[/name_f] because of its -a ending. It’s short, which is best for your surname, and I love the connection to a type of tree native to [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m]. I think that’s a really lovely way of tying her to her Hawaiian “roots”
I naturally pronounced Keala as kee-YA-lah so not far off from the actual pronunciation. I don’t think she’d have too much trouble with it. I like the invisible thread, it’s a neat idea. Because your boys are SO natural though I would tend to lean toward something along the same vein for a girl child.
K names that are Hawaiian or nature related:
[name_m]Kea[/name_m] (Mauna [name_m]Kea[/name_m] is the highest point in [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m])
[name_f]Kailani[/name_f] (sea and sky)
[name_f]Kamara[/name_f] (not Hawaiian but means moonlight in swahili)
[name_f]Non[/name_f] K names that are Hawaiian or nature related that go well with [name_m]Hawk[/name_m] and [name_u]North[/name_u]:
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_u]Prairie[/name_u]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_u]Ash[/name_u]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] (black coral is the state stone of hawaii)
Malie (serene)
[name_f]Noelani[/name_f] (heavenly mist)
[name_f]Maple[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
[name_u]Vale[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
I think you will likely have issues if you live in an area that isn’t too familiar with Hawaiian names but! I still think you should use it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] explain that it is a Hawaiian name if you think people might mistake it for [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] or [name_f]Keyla[/name_f]. I almost always had to explain how to pronounce my name but it didn’t bother me growing up. I think it’s a beautiful name.
I would have said Kee luh. I would keep looking
Thank you for all of your thoughts and suggestions! It’s really helping but I still don’t know what to do. Keep’em coming please!
Anyone else want to weigh in please?
I agree with your husband.
“My husband loves the name Keala”*
I had no trouble sounding it out correctly. Also I love the nn you already have for her.
Here’s what’s funny. I have no idea how to pronounce many of the other suggestions… like [name_f]Kailani[/name_f]!
The meaning, “the path” is very much in keeping with [name_u]North[/name_u] which is also a direction. In fact, it all seemed so perfect to me that I began speculating on an A name for your 4th child!
What about [name_u]Kai[/name_u]? Also Hawaiian, one syllable, starts with a K, no spelling or pronunciation issues, has a nature meaning (“sea”), and is genuinely unisex!
As someone with a K name, just about any name starting with this letter will cause some confusion! But I do think Keala would likely cause more than most. That said, if you love it, you love it! But if you think it’s not worth the hassle, [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_m]Keanu[/name_m], [name_f]Kallista[/name_f], [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f], [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f], [name_f]Kira[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], [name_f]Kala[/name_f], and [name_u]Kalani[/name_u] are alternatives.
[name_u]Kalani[/name_u] (sky)
[name_f]Kaisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Kasi[/name_f] (radient)
So far no luck…he thinks I’m crazy.
The runner up so far - and now might be heading into first is [name_f]Kalea[/name_f] . But I’ve seen so many different definitions of what it might actually mean and I’m worried that it might be too popular. [name_u]North[/name_u] and [name_m]Hawk[/name_m] are very distinctive and I’d like our daughter to have the same thing. Funny - I didn’t stress nearly this much over either of my boys’ names. [name_u]Baby[/name_u] girl has me stumped.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about the nn you are already using as her full name? [name_f]Kiki[/name_f] is short and pretty unique. Also When I first saw Keala I sounded it out as you wanted it.
I liked the suggestion of [name_m]Koa[/name_m] also. (but my mind went to a nn progression…[name_f]Kiki[/name_f] Kola Koka Kola Sorry, my weird mind)
If we go with Keala we were thinking she would be Keala [name_f]Breeze[/name_f]
If I was you, I would take Keala, even if it may be pronounced the wrong way, because you like the name and it fits.
Plus, your daughter has always something to start a conversation with. My name is Géraldine, and people always pronounce it the wrong way but then I correct them and most of them then ask why I have this name.
I personally really like Keala and I didn’t assume it was a fancy spelling of [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] (probably because I’m [name_m]German[/name_m])
Good luck for you and your children!
Keala [name_f]Breeze[/name_f] is lovely! And feminine.
Why would you even consider unisex names when this may be the only daughter you will ever have?
I pronounced it Kee-la when I first saw it. But, I think the name is very pretty. I agree that Keala [name_f]Breeze[/name_f] is a lovely combo. I would still use it. I’m usually not a huge fan of alternative spellings but one might be useful here to avoid confusion.
