It’s been a long time since I’ve been a regular here, but I love all the help and advice I’ve received despite that!
We are pregnant with our third (and probably final ) baby. We are 95% sure we are having another little girl. Of course my mind has been on names since seeing the positive test. I am 90% sure we will choose either Clementine or Mabel, but would love general thoughts on our list of possibilities and would love to know what you think best compliments the sibset.
Our older two children are Olive Hermione Florence and Theodore Ezra Atticus who goes by Teddy 98% of the time.
I always wanted to choose less popular names for my children, but did end up choosing names more popular once I had to compromise with my partner. Olive was ranked #100 in her year of birth in our state of Australia, and Theodore was ranked #17 in his year of birth. Surprisingly popularity has always mattered more to me when it comes to girl names.
Sorry for the tangent! Here is our list, can’t wait to hear your opinions!
Clementine
Mabel
Ada - my partner is Adam and although they don’t sound the same, I’m not sure I like how similar they look. Currently ranked at #94
Cordelia
Harriet - there is an acquaintance within my circle who named her daughter Harriet this year. I’ve not met her baby nor seen her since the beginning of the year, but it is a drawback for me. We also have considered it every pregnancy so far and just feel a bit bored of it? Currently ranked at #52
Sibyl - just not sure if it’s a bit too old?
Dorothy - as above…my partner and I both LOVE the idea of a little Dottie running around however
Edith - also considered every pregnancy and just feeling a bit bored of it.
Love Mabel with your kiddos!
Clementine is lovely, too, but with Olive I find it brings out the food aspect of both names a little too much.
Also love Ada & Edith (and Sibyl but the spelling looks off to me, though I know it’s legit) for you!
Edit: if you love Dottie, I thought I’d throw in Ottilie as a full name that isn’t similar to Theodore. However, I also think if you had Dorothy as the first middle name, you could always use nicknames such as May-Dot, Emmy-Dot,…
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] - this is such a gorgeous name. It’s soft yet grand, and it’s one of my long term favourites! It reminds me of the song and I love nn [name_u]Clem[/name_u], [name_u]Clemmy[/name_u], [name_f]Cece[/name_f] ans [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - this has such a warm and friendly sound and the meaning is absolutely delightful. It’s a wonderful, cuddly name that I think fits well with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Ada[/name_f], but my brother is an [name_m]Adam[/name_m] and that would put me off using it
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - elegant, literary and bold with a beautiful meaning - it is very grand but familiar too
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - given that you have an acquaintance who used the name and don’t find it as exciting, I’d strike it from the list -you have other good choices
[name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] - [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] is bubbly and quirky. I don’t find it odd but then I’m perpetually on nameberry which probably distorts my view a bit. Sylvie/Sylvia feels like an alternative?
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] is so cute and playful!! I don’t find this odd at all -I’ve met a little [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], a [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] in her 20s and i know some youtubers with a [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] so it’s in use and will probably feel more familiar to regular, non-name folk
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - love the sweet strength of [name_f]Edith[/name_f] but if you’re bored of it and it’s not feeling right for the baby, I’d stick to the ones you’re still loving
Honestly my fav is [name_f]Ada[/name_f]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it has the similarities to your husband, it still sounds great with your children’s names and on it’s own. It could just be used as a way to honor him!
If you are unsure, then my favorite is [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]! So feminine and so girly!!!
Fellow Australian here. I think you have a strong list and a very clear style at that. As it happens, most of these names feature on my own list except for your top two choices. [name_f]My[/name_f] initial instinct between your top names is toward [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. For me it hits the same notes and holds the same gravity as the sibling names. I’m thinking of their full names for this.
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f], on the other hand, has this boldness and youthfulness about it that seems slightly at odds with the sibling style. But if I take [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] instead of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], the gap suddenly closes. I actually met an outspoken five year old [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] also called ‘Clem’ this week and it was quite a sweet name to see in use. I still think I’d choose [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] for overall sibling cohesion and because I tend to prefer shorter names.
I don’t see any real barriers to any of the names on your long list but if you’re not feeling them, you’re not feeling them. The only thing that stood out for me was the repeated meanings between [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and how they are the inverse of each other. That would be too much for me personally, but someone else might love that connection.
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous I love this name and if your third is coming around [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] (I’m probably incorrectly assuming) then [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is perfect. Also I think she sounds sweet in your sibling set only draw back for me is that both [name_f]Olive[/name_f] & [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] are actual things (food) and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] isn’t would that be jarring?
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] & [name_f]Ada[/name_f] both cute vintage names that are becoming popular if popularity is a concern I wouldn’t use. Regarding Ada/Adam is that is already niggling at you then I would scratch off the list. I think if your wanting to go vintage [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (which is gorgeous), [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] (definitely not too old needs to be revived) and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (absolutely gorgeous) are the way to go with [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] being my favourite for you as you seem really happy about this one.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is a lovely strong name that feels classy in your sibling set but the comments about being bored and regarding the acquaintance puts me off. Have you looked at other names with a similar strong t sound like [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] they may appeal to you.
Regarding [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is beautiful such fun strong classic. I like that [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] shares a strong ‘o’ sound just like [name_f]Olive[/name_f] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. I think she sounds great in your sibling set.
From your list I really like for you guys [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] & [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] with [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] being my favourite. Your general positivity surrounding the name and idea of a little [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] makes me feel that this is your name!
I adore your list! Many of these names are favorites of mine.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].
With [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and Thodore I would go for [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]! [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] is adorable.
What beautiful names you’ve chosen for your children . You also have some fab names on your shortlist. My favorites are Cordelia and Edith. I’ve always matched Olive and Edith together as a sibset in my head, they go so perfectly. Olive, Teddy & Edie. Or Olive, Teddy and Cora . I also love Ada and Harriet, but would strike them for the reasons you’ve mentioned. Clementine & Mabel, while lovely, are a bit go-to hipster name for me, and I’m not sure I like Dorothy being similar to Theodore in terms of syllable count and the th sounds. Sibyl is not my personal taste, but it would definitely fit. How about Ida?
You’ve great taste, I’m sure whatever you pick will be a winner.
I absolutely adore your list. My favorites have to be Dorothy, Mabel, Ada, & Cordelia!
I don’t think Dorothy is too old at all! I think it’s quite darling!
Ada is gorgeous as well, perhaps you might like a longer version with nn Ada, if the similarity between Ada & Adam is a bit bothersome? Since you like Cordelia, I thought maybe Adeliza, Adelaide, Adora or Adalia fit in nicely. However I do like the sound of Ada and Adam together too!
If you really like [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] but think [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] sounds a bit too old, it can also be a nickname for [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], which still has a vintage vibe but not as much.
I like all of your names with the exception of [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] which I think is one of those old lady names that should have stayed in mothballs. I like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], and [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. I actually had aunts named [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_f]Edie[/name_f].
[name_f]My[/name_f] picks for you are [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] - I just feel this is too long with the other names and I cannot think of a good nickname for this to work with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - Seriously adorable. For a long time I wanted two girls named [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] (then my cousin had a baby and named it [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - so maybe you can live out my dream LOL). [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] are perfect together.
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] - I think this is a little too stuffy with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - Again, a little too long with the other two. To work I think I would call her [name_f]Delia[/name_f], but then I would just name her [name_f]Delia[/name_f] and not [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - I wouldn’t name my daughter [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] if I knew someone who just did so. That’s just me, though! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if I hadn’t met the baby.
[name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] - I love this name, but I don’t think it flows well with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - SO cute. I think this flows very well with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], and the nickname [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] even works well with the other two! [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - If you are bored with it, it’s probably a no go. The nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is sweet though!
I love [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] in your set! That one gets my vote.
Here are my thoughts on your other ideas:
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is nice, but I feel like it feels a little fruity with [name_f]Olive[/name_f], leaving Theodore/Teddy out.
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] would both be fantastic with the older siblings! You can’t go wrong with either of these.
As much as I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], I’d avoid it because it is literally the same name as [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (same meaning & origin), just feminine and reversed in the order of sound.
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] is a little similar in sound to [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], even though it’s a great style match.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] feels just a little extravagant with the more grounded, familiar [name_f]Olive[/name_f] & Theodore/Teddy.
Ohhh your children’s names are just gorgeous. I think Mabel goes best with Olive and Teddy! So very sweet!!
Of the rest of your list, I think Dorothy would be the closest second to Mabel. Dottie is so so cute. I just think Mabel is a bit warmer and goes even better with Olive and Teddy!
I also think Ada would be so cute with Olive and Teddy, but as it’s so close to Adam … I think Adele would be even lovelier!!
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] - I don’t really like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]. It sounds super clunky in my opinion.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] feels a bit old lady-ish to me. It just reminds me of [name_f]Gravity[/name_f] Falls. It’s kind of cute, but I don’t really like it that much.
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] - I really like [name_f]Ada[/name_f]! I think it’s short and sweet.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is cute, and [name_f]Delia[/name_f] is a nickname possibility. I like it, but it’s not my absolute favorite.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]! I believe it’s popular in other parts of the world, but it isn’t even ranked in the US. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is super sweet, but also strong and mature.
[name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] - I don’t have much of an opinion on [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]. It’s okay I guess.
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - I don’t really have much of an opinion of [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] either. It’s a fine name.
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - This name is also a little old lady-ish to be, but it’s cute!
All in all, I think this list of names if good. Most of these names just aren’t really my style. I do love [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], though. I’m sure of these names would suit your baby well.
