Baby #4 - if it's a beautiful boy

Hi all,

We’ve already got three children - Harriet (7) and twins Joseph and Abigail (4) - and we thought that was going to be that. Once the twins started school, the plan was for me to go back to work part time, but it seems nature got in the way and we’ve ended up expecting another baby again, due in March. We don’t know the gender yet, and I’m not sure whether we’re going to find out, we did with the twins but not with our eldest.

We want something a bit classic with a cute nickname, and these are the ones we’ve come up with so far.

Maxwell
Elliot (hubby loves this but I think it’s too close to Harriet - thoughts?)
Samuel
William
Oliver
Edward
Matthew

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Can’t use Toby (our cat) or Charlie, Thomas, Jack, Frankie, Freddie as already taken by family though.

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] get my vote.

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] & [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] – [name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_u]Sammie[/name_u]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] & [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]

[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] - Feels a bit more trendy than your other kids’ names but solid enough
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] (hubby loves this but I think it’s too close to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - thoughts?) - I think it’s too close to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] too with the repeated -et/-ot ending, unfortunately - lovely name though.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] are very classic, handsome brothers
[name_m]William[/name_m] - Nice but possibly a little too formal with your other kids’ names, what nickname would you use?
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] with your sibset, a great pick.
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - Ditto [name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] - What do you nickname [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]? [name_m]Matt[/name_m] and [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] are too close for siblings if you use that for her.

Have to say, I love your taste

Oh, I love them all except [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]. I think with your kids, I like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_m]William[/name_m], and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m].

I say [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] to go with siblings [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m].

Thanks everyone. We’re going to take [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] off the list, I think it’s too close to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and my husband will have to come round to only using it as a middle name if at all. Interesting that [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] seem to be the two favourites. We were seriously considering [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] with the twins, if they had been boy/boy we’d have used [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], and we had a tough decision which one to use out of the two for our son anyway.

Would it seem like we’re giving this baby a ‘leftover’ name if we use a name we’d previously considered for an older sibling? That’s my main worry with using [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], as much as I love it, I don’t want him to think we didn’t put any thought into coming up with a new name for him.

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] gets my vote. All of your names are very different, but very classic and practical. [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] has that same vibe to me.

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] would be my second choice.

What about [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]?

No its not leftover at all! I think you should look at it as not being able to use both names you loved before!

I don’t think it’s leftover but it’s kind of funny how it feels that way, isn’t it? That somehow there just isn’t a baby named [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and it’s not really available this time. But I think that’s just in the mommy brain not how it would seem to your son or others.
I actually love [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] with your kids and don’t find it too close to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]. But I see it’s off your list. From the others, I like [name_m]Edward[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m].

Suggestions:
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
[name_m]Stuart[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] sounds perfect with sibs, imo. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] works well too, but it feels the least stylish of your names, if that means anything to you. And yes, I do think [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is too close to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].

Congrats!

My thoughts on your names:
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] - I do like this name, he feels handsome and has a cool all-American-boy sound. So because of this, I find that [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] feels, a little off with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], as this sibling set sounds so British.

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] - I agree too close to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - A lovely biblical classic. He has a soft, handsome sound and looks really sweet. I love the [name_u]Sam[/name_u] nickname! [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] also works with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. The names sound great together.

[name_m]William[/name_m] - [name_m]Ah[/name_m] a lovely regal classic! [name_m]William[/name_m] sounds lovely, has a very classy vibe and is rich in history. I love the nicknames for [name_m]William[/name_m] as well [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_m]Will[/name_m], [name_m]Bill[/name_m], [name_u]Billy[/name_u], and [name_m]Wills[/name_m]. He sounds so perfectly British with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f].

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - I really love the name [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]; it’s handsome, demure, and has a lovely elegant sound. I also love the [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] nickname. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] works with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f].

[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - A lovely name, feels so retro and cool teamed with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. I love the [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] nickname as well. It just works.

[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] - Hmm I do like [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] it’s a fine name but feels slightly beige…

[name_m]Timothy[/name_m] ‘[name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] & [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]’
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] ‘[name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] & [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]’

Thanks everyone, I’m glad you don’t think it’s a leftover name and is still usable - I do still love it, and I’d love to use it, I’m just a bit apprehensive over whether it would be weird or not.

I think the list is narrowed down as such:

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] ([name_u]Sam[/name_u])
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] ([name_u]Ollie[/name_u])
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] (probably [name_m]Eddie[/name_m])
[name_m]William[/name_m] (probably [name_m]Will[/name_m])

Of the suggestions, I’m going to put the following to my husband tonight and see what he thinks - the rest either aren’t really my style or we’ve got associations which kind of makes them unusable:

[name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Timothy[/name_m] - though would [name_m]Tim[/name_m] and [name_m]Tom[/name_m] be too close for cousins who live in the same town, even if there’s an eight year age gap?
