Baby books dont address this question on flow and ryhme

First/Last name begins & ends in the same letter…too rhymey?

Examples of what I mean: [name]Milo[/name] Manacito, [name]Caden[/name] Cannesson, [name]Harlow[/name] Hannacito, [name]Vanessa[/name] Vanaccia

Would this be a no no in naming? Is it over the top rhymey?

I think that matching first letters OR matching last letters is ok. But when both the first and last letters match it is a little too much. Too bad, I like the name [name]Helen[/name] but doesn’t work with last name Hoffman.

I think your example with [name]Vanessa[/name] is especially bad because both first and last name start with the same syllable [name]Van[/name]-.

I think it depends. As long as the sounds in between are very different or contrasting, it sounds okay, or if the names have a different number of syllables. To the previous poster: I know a [name]Helen[/name] [name]Hansen[/name], and I think the repeating letters are kind of appealing. [name]Helen[/name] Hoffman sounds nice!

I actually kind of like it if it’s not too obvious/rhymey.

[name]Imagine[/name]… [name]Helen[/name] Hoffman with the Nightly News. You definitely remember these names and they sound distinctive.

I’ve thought about this. I think if your last name ends in a vowel it might sound too rhyme-y (mine ends in with the -ello sound and I love the name [name]Enzo[/name] but I think it might sound silly). I don’t think names starting with the same letter as the last name always sound silly. It would work if the first and last were different enough in sound and style.

One thing I try to stay away from is ending the first name with the same letter as my last name…avoids misunderstanding when saying the full name.

My name is [name]Kaitlin[/name] [name]Kenyon[/name]. Last syllable of the two names isn’t exactly the same, but I love my name and always have. I don’t think it’s an issue, unless you want to do like [name]Isabella[/name] Icarella or something.

Thanks everyone for your input. Now I would like to get more opinions from people on the idea of the first and last name sharing the same syllable…the example of [name]Van[/name] and [name]Van[/name] is a good one. Does everyone else agree with the one poster who said it was too rhymey? What if as one of the posters mentioned the rest of the first and last name is different, therefore the only commonality is that first syllable…would that make for a good flowing name or would it be a no no being to rhymey? Of course all the names listed are just examples, but I am brainstorming on whether or not to do something similiar with my child’s name.

[name]Vanessa[/name] Vanguard … [name]Robin[/name] [name]Roberts[/name] … I don’t know. Obviously it’s worked before … let’s just say I wouldn’t do it.

I think they call this “alliteration” in the books. [name]Just[/name] my 2 cents.

I don’t like it when the first and last name start with the same letter and have rhyming first syllables.

Yes, it’s called alliteration when both names start with the same letter and I personally don’t mind it at all! Ex: [name]Henry[/name] Haroldson

I do think that a first syllable repetition (ala [name]Van[/name]*essa [name]Van[/name]*guard) should probably be avoided, but then again, my own name violates this rule and I don’t mind it at all! If the first and last names had the same number of syllables or the same ending as well it is probably too much.

Worst of all I think are names like [name]John[/name] [name]Johnson[/name] or [name]Christopher[/name] Christopherson. I’d definitely avoid those!

Each case probably has to be evaluated individually; I say use your own personal discretion!

Funny this, because I was considering [name]Emmeline/name pron. and the last name is [name]Deane[/name].I thought it sounded well but my other half thought it too rhymey.Who is right?

I don’t mind alliteration when the first letters are the same but not the whole first syllable. Also, I prefer when the two names have a different amount of syllables too.

So like [name]Vanessa[/name] Vangarden (or whatever your suggestion was, sorry!) is bad but [name]Vanessa[/name] [name]Vaughn[/name] would be okay.

I like [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Collins[/name] but not [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Carmichael[/name].

I hope this makes sense…

I also hate rhyming names like PP’s [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Deane[/name]. Sorry.

Also names like [name]Donald[/name] [name]MacDonald[/name] is AWFUL.
