For baby boy #2, I love the name Oli (pronounced oh-lee), however I don’t want it to be a nickname for [name]Oliver[/name]. [name]Will[/name] it stand on its own as a name?
Hmmm…that’s a toughie. My first reaction is to say that because [name]Eli[/name] can stand on it’s own, that Oli can do. But something about Oli seems incomplete to me. What if you spelled it [name]Olie[/name] or even [name]Ollie[/name]?
There’s the Finnish name [name]Olli[/name] ([name]OLE[/name]-lee, which I think is close to how you’re pronouncing Oli? OH like the letter O?) and it’s fine as a stand-alone, but Finnish names have a tendency to be very nicknamey. There are 3 guys playing in the NHL right now named [name]Olli[/name], and one of them has been around for years, so I feel like it’s a fairly normal name but that may not be the case if you live somewhere in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name] where hockey doesn’t make the news (and there’s no Finnish news either)
If you don’t care for [name]Oliver[/name], does [name]Olivier[/name] strike your fancy at all?
Other potential options:
[name]Collin[/name] ([name]Collin[/name] -> [name]Collie[/name] as a pet name happens -> Oli it isn’t much of a stretch; but if you are pronouncing it with the O not AW sound, then this really doesn’t work that well, eh?)
[name]Hollis[/name]
[name]Dillon[/name]
[name]Lionel[/name]
[name]ELLIOTT[/name]!
I don’t think Oli is substantial enough. Oli wouldn’t be pronounced oh-lee.
I prefer [name]Olivier[/name], the French version of [name]Oliver[/name]. But even more, I prefer Ollivander. (Yes, I’m an HP fan.)
I don’t think so. It’s actually a formal name, spelled [name]Ole[/name] in Swedish, but in English that would be pronounced ‘oal,’ like [name]Ole[/name] [name]King[/name] [name]Cole[/name]. Oli will be pronounced [name]Ollie[/name].
Agree with blade re: [name]Ollie[/name] pronunciation, also I get hung up on the idea of always being asked “what’s that short for?” I’ve been asked that my whole life and it does indeed get old.
Oli (Oh-lee) is one of my favorite names! I love it alone…
I think it’s so cute! Of course I would use it as a nickname for [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] instead of [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] (this spelling has always bothered me; it’s so cutesy, I don’t see it aging well.) but Oli is handsome and intriguing, [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. It is a wee little name. But then so is [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. I kind of love it.
