Baby boy a week old and no name - help!

[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]- Wolfie

Haha yes and I thought having a surname ending in “son” ruled out lots! A few more…
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] “[name_m]Raffy[/name_m]”
[name_m]Ricardo[/name_m] “[name_u]Ricky[/name_u]”
[name_m]Delano[/name_m] “Lano”

[name_u]Timber[/name_u] “[name_m]Timmy[/name_m]”

[name_m]Rolando[/name_m] “Roly”
[name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] “[name_u]Laurie[/name_u]” or “[name_m]Renzo[/name_m]”
Otherwise would u consider a name like [name_u]Reggie[/name_u] as the full name, or a name like [name_m]Huntley[/name_m] or [name_u]Remy[/name_u] that wouldn’t get shortened but fits with [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_f]Indi[/name_f]?
Good luck!

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] are different enough that [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] could totally work. [name_m]Hank[/name_m] or [name_u]Hayes[/name_u] could be nicknames

[name_u]Miles[/name_u] or [name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_u]Auden[/name_u]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]

I actually really like [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] with your boys names! Shortened versions are a bit harder but could always use one for [name_u]James[/name_u] ie [name_u]Jem[/name_u]. I also love [name_m]Barney[/name_m]!

I would like to suggest a few names on our list that we didn’t use because it sounded to similar or clashed w other kids names:

I saw you liked Appo, and one of our son’s middle name is [name_m]Apollos[/name_m]. The “s” makes it a little different than [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], but maybe still a bit too close for your husband’s taste. [name_m]Worth[/name_m] a try.

Good luck!

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] "[name_u]Ollie[/name_u], [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] “[name_u]Indie[/name_u]”, [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] “Rufie”.

Use [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]! I’ve taught a bunch of Hugos and not one has ever been called [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] for short. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Indy[/name_u] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is perfect! Other options (sorry for any repeats):

I think [name_m]Miro[/name_m] or [name_m]Elio[/name_m] are great options for you. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] and [name_m]Miro[/name_m] / [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] and [name_m]Elio[/name_m] make lovely sib sets!

Sorry for any duplicates. Here are some suggestions of various styles, with potential nicknames:

[name_m]Abe[/name_m] or [name_m]Arnie[/name_m] as nn for [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] perhaps?
Also I agree with the previous poster about [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I’ve never taught a [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] that’s been shortened to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] either. I do know one child who’s parents called him “[name_m]Hughie[/name_m]” but the other kids still called him [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

It looks like you’ve gone through an abundance of names already. I’m not sure what listing more options would add at this point. I wonder if you might reconsider some of the names you’ve previously ruled out. Choosing a name for your child is a very special gift, and both parents ought to feel satisfied with the decision but the name is unlikely to be perfect in every single way–especially when faced with as many challenges as you are.

I think it might be worth looking at your naming criteria again and seeing if there’s anything you can agree on scrapping. It seems to me you have a long list of preferences and this might be causing more frustration and limitation than what’s really helpful right now. If I were going to make a short list, I’d start with the names you’ve said you love and start to look for solutions or wider perspectives on the specific issues you’ve mentioned such as flow with your last name. They may not be as big an issue as you’re predicting.

So that would leave me with [name_m]Hamish[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]. What’s interesting to me is that you raise popularity as an issue and yet you have a son named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]–the #1 boys name in the UK. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still feel good about the name? If so, I wonder if popularity isn’t as much a concern for you as you think. The names you’ve listed range in popularity but most are very familiar and in common use. Another issue that seems to come up a lot is nicknames. Your two older sons both have longer names at three and four syllables each, which lends itself more easily to nicknames. Most of the names on your list are shorter than three syllables, so it makes sense that these names feel different to what you’re used to. But if these are the names you like, then is a shorter name with a less instinctive nickname a deal breaker or just a point of difference? Are [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] always referred to as [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_u]Indy[/name_u], or just in the family home and with friends? When they grow older they may choose not to go by those nicknames any more. These are just some things to think about.

Now to the names themselves. I peronsally think [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] sounds great with brothers [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u]. I would say [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] are very different styles already, but not in a way that’s shocking or incompatible so any of the names on your list can work well. Their nicknames definitely bring them closer together but that doesn’t mean [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] needs one. [name_u]Hayes[/name_u] could definitely work as a nickname if you wanted one, and Mish as well. [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] could go by [name_m]Buzz[/name_m] or [name_m]Bear[/name_m], or even [name_u]Barry[/name_u] or Bazza. There’s not much you can do to shorten [name_u]Kai[/name_u], but you could choose an longer name like [name_u]Micah[/name_u], [name_m]Malakai[/name_m] or [name_m]Caius[/name_m] and use [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as the nickname. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] won’t necessarily be shortened to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] because it’s already a short zippy name, and people are generally respectful if someone wishes to only be referred by their full name. But perhaps you don’t mind [name_m]Huey[/name_m]?

I think these are all handsome names and any would be a great addition to your family. All the best with your decision!
