Baby boy name too similar to my boyfriend's name?

My boyfriend and I are expecting a boy and I love the name [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], but unfortunately he’s not a fan  We both like [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], the only problem I have with the name is that is sounds very similar to my boyfriend’s name which is [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]. He likes the similarity, but I don’t know how I feel about it. What do you all think?

I love both names but I don’t personally like the similarity between [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m].
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_u]Schuyler[/name_u]
[name_m]Emilio[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucien[/name_m]
[name_m]Cassiel[/name_m]
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] are a bit similar, but I think they’re not too close for you to use [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. They look more similar written out than they do spoken- all the letters of [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] are in [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and in the right order, but the As make different sounds when you say them, so it’s just the ending that’s the same- and you’ll be saying/hearing them a lot more than you’ll write them! Also, it won’t be [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] most of the time to you, it would probably be Dad and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] if you were saying them together/talking to both of them.

I think they would be too similar for siblings, but not for a father-son relationship. It’s not like they rhyme or differ by a single letter or anything that could be genuinely confusing.

But I also think it’s completely valid if it’s just weird to you — you’re the one who will most likely use both names most often. I’m drawn to “L” names, but my name also starts with L and I can tell that similarity bothers my husband a bit. And since it would affect him the most, I think it’s fair to give him that veto power.

I agree that if it were siblings I’d say no, but Father and [name_m]Son[/name_m] is fine. It’s almost like naming him after his dad, but they still get their own names. They don’t even sound horribly alike, just the same ending. I think it’s fine, but its your kid and if you decide you have a problem with that and can’t get past it, then keep looking.

I do not think the names are too similar for you to use [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]! The beginning sounds are quite different. Yes, as the previous posters have said, I wouldn’t name [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]'s brother [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. But as father/son I don’t think the similarity is too great at all. They wouldn’t lend themselves to the same nicknames. But anyway, follow your heart, and I wish you all the best!

I think it’s fine. My brother’s name happens to rhyme with my dad’s name and I don’t think I ever heard anyone comment on it.
