Baby boy needs a name!

We just found out our first child, due in [name_f]October[/name_f], will be a BOY! Very excited, but needing some serious help with names! We do know his middle name will be [name_u]James[/name_u] (set in stone) and our last name is [name_m]Moss[/name_m].

We’ve been tossing around some names, but each has been giving me a little hesitation, so I’d love to hear some more ideas! Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • Preferably 2 or more syllables. I’d worry about the flow with a one syllable name + [name_u]James[/name_u] + [name_m]Moss[/name_m]
  • Likewise no names ending in “s” (because of middle and last name)
  • I’d like something that’s recognisable as a name but not TOO popular. Classic/vintage is good
  • I tend to like names ending in the -er sound
  • Name should go well in a sib set with [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], which is the name we have picked out for our first daughter (literally the only girl name we have ever agreed on, so that isn’t changing!)

Some options we have considered so far:

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (our favourite for a long time but [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is SO common that we are second guessing ourselves)
[name_m]Timothy[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (I like this name and especially the nicknames [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] and even TJ. But I would hate [name_m]Tim[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Moss[/name_m] because the flow is awful)
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] (this is probably my frontrunner right now. Would go with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] over [name_m]Charles[/name_m] because of the “s” ending)
[name_m]Trevor[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (one of my favourites but hubby isn’t convinced)
[name_m]Milo[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (this sounds so cute in principle, but even though I live in [name_u]America[/name_u], I’m from Australia, and everyone there would think naming a child [name_m]Milo[/name_m] is weird!)
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (hubby loves this. I’m concerned with the shortening to [name_m]Wes[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Moss[/name_m]. It sounds so weird to me)
[name_u]Luca[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] (I like it, hubby’s not convinced)
[name_u]River[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] ([name_u]River[/name_u] is about as out-there as my naming tastes get. Is this too unisex though? I know both [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u] can be used on girls now, and I would like something masculine to balance out the femininity of [name_f]Cora[/name_f])
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] (totally my style but can’t be used with [name_f]Cora[/name_f]!)

Help! Can’t wait to hear your suggestions

Congrats! Sounds like you have a great start - I love the handsome [name_u]James[/name_u] as a middle and love your girl name too!

Of your list I like [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] the most. I wouldn’t worry about [name_m]Wes[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Moss[/name_m]. He can easily be [name_m]Wes[/name_m] or [name_m]Wes[/name_m] [name_m]Moss[/name_m] but I can’t imagine when someone would use his full name without using his full first name rather than his nick name. Using that same logic I wouldn’t rule out [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] either.

I would not use [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] as a formal name, especially along side a potential [name_f]Cora[/name_f]. If your girl name was [name_f]Kara[/name_f] or [name_u]Cory[/name_u] I might consider [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] but [name_f]Cora[/name_f] seems more formal to me.

I wouldn’t worry about [name_u]River[/name_u] seeming too unisex but the style seems more hippy/naturey than [name_f]Cora[/name_f].

The others are just ok to me.

Some other names you might like:

[name_m]Adrian[/name_m]
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Ridley[/name_u]
[name_m]Turner[/name_m]

Good luck!

I named my son [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and almost didn’t because of popularity. You have to pick the name that years don’t the line you will still love to say.

My favorites are [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_u]Luca[/name_u]. I also like [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] “TJ” and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m].

My favs with [name_f]Cora[/name_f]:

[name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]

My favorite would be [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] followed by [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u].

[name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Trevor[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_u]River[/name_u], and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] aren’t my style and I don’t think flows well overall.

[name_m]Timothy[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] I like 3rd.

& I can’t picture a grown man going by [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. To me [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is a nickname for [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and that is what most people would probably always assume.
