Baby Girl #2

Hello!

I posted here right before my first baby was born and found peoples perceptions of our top names so interesting and helpful! My husband and I are having a hard time deciding on a name (or even agreeing on top choices) and I would love some outside input. We don’t share names with family or friends in advance

Our daughters name is Willa and we are expecting our second baby girl soon. My husband and I are both very particular about names and would generally like to choose a name that is:

  1. feminine
  2. easy enough to say/spell (doesn’t have 10 versions)
  3. Isn’t a top 20/50 etc. name that every baby seems to have
  4. Not a trendy name that can be pinpointed to a specific decade (like Bodhi for a boy)
  5. Does not start with the letter S

Our current choices are below along with some notes… I would also LOVE to know what comes to mind when you think of a girl with these names (or even just what comes to mind for your favorite two names as I have listed quite a few).

Emmy - husbands top choice, I like how it sounds but very much worry about this name long term and it being too ‘nicknamey’. That said, I don’t know if in reality it is any different than Carly or Kelly etc. which I never question on friends as legitimate names. My other concern is how close it is to Emma which is so popular.

Elle - We considered this name for our first but it doesn’t sound amazing with our last name, basically sounds like you are saying something in spanish. Also difficult to choose middle names for. Same concern about popularity proximity to Ella/Ellie, but all that aside I do like this name a lot. We also considered Nell, but I think we both prefer Elle.

Mari - husband likes this name (and also that W and M are inverses of each other for the sisters). I like it but it also feels nicknamey to me and not super feminine. We briefly thought about Marielle but this just feels like a compromise so we could call her either Mari or Elle so might as well just name her what we want.

Celia - I have been considering this more recently and think it sounds beautiful, feminine and classic. Not sure if my husband is sold. Also considering Cecilia but I think we like Celia more.

Gia - I like, husband isn’t sold.

Camille - Keeping this on our list just because we haven’t found the one and it is a pretty french name but don’t love the ‘meal’ sound. Also don’t love the nicknames of Cami or Millie, but don’t hate them either.

Other names we originally considered but have been vetoed by one of us were Alessandra (beautiful full name but don’t want her to be called Ali and would really hate a sandra/sandy nickname), Halle, Avalon, April (baby is due in April),

Thank you so much in advance!!!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] is lovely. You did a great job there.

Here are my thoughts on your list-

Emmy-I don’t know. I like other ‘Em’ names like [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f] & [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] just sounds a bit too cutesy. And it’s definitely too close to the super popular Emma; many who probably get called [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for short.

Elle-I agree that if you don’t want a popular name or don’t want the nn of [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (which I find adorable, but very over done), then maybe best to stay away from this one too. I like it in theory, but it really does feel incomplete to me.

Mari-This is kind of cute & different, but I agree that it seems too nick-name-y. [name_f]Marielle[/name_f] feels like a good solution. I also really like [name_f]Marina[/name_f] or [name_f]Mariana[/name_f].

Celia-Love this one for you. It gives the same sleek, classic, smart, quiet, simple, classic vibe as [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. It’s easy & well known but not at all popular. I hear [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] way more often . I prefer the simplicity of [name_f]Celia[/name_f] too.

Gia-Meh, too short & too close to the way popular [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]. I think that it’s better as a nn (gosh, I’m picky about that!) [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], [name_f]Giuliana[/name_f]?

Camille-I’m with you here too. I like it. It’s French-y & smart & fairly interesting. But I don’t like [name_f]Cami[/name_f] & I’m lukewarm on [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. And saying this out loud does sound too ‘mealy’.

Here are a few more ideas that you may like-

Congratulations! [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is a lovely name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite for you is [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. It seems to fit all of your criteria. It’s uncommon but well-known, classic and feminine, and has one primary spelling. I imagine a [name_f]Celia[/name_f] to be sweet, artistic, and social.

[name_f]Mari[/name_f] is my second choice for you. I think it’s quite feminine despite not being frilly, and not too nicknamey since it’s uncommon.

I think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is more popular/trendy than you want. It’s similar to [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and there are probably many little Emmys right now who are technically [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], etc since [name_f]Em[/name_f]- is such a popular name beginning right now. I think [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is the same way. [name_f]Gia[/name_f] I like for you but if your husband doesn’t like it I would drop it from the list. Same with [name_u]Camille[/name_u] since neither of you seems to love it.

I would suggest for you…
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] – Similar to [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], etc. It’s vintage and feminine and easy to spell/pronounce.

[name_f]Mara[/name_f] – a fuller and more feminine alternative to [name_f]Mari[/name_f].

[name_f]Augusta[/name_f] – feminine, easy to say/spell, and not at all trendy despite being well known.

[name_f]Eve[/name_f] – sweet, classic, and feminine. [name_m]Easy[/name_m] to spell and pronounce. Similar to [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Elle[/name_f].

From your list, my favorites are [name_f]Mari[/name_f] and [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. Have you considered [name_f]Mara[/name_f]? I think that one is pretty intuitive with pronunciation and spelling and also feminine but spunky like [name_f]Willa[/name_f].

I pretty much agree with everything @MichelleM said about the rest of your list.

[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is gorgeous too! [name_f]Cheerful[/name_f] and arty!

Willa is so lovely!
I really like Celia, Mari, and Avalon as her sister and also the suggestions of Vida, Thea, Audra, June, Cecilia, Eloise, and Margo.

Edit…I can’t decide which is my favourite but it may be good to choose a name not ending in the letter ‘a’ so it is a bit different from Willa. Emmy blends in with all the variations of Emma, Emily, and Emilia so feels very overdone which you are trying to avoid.

Congratulations!!! The finish line is in sight !!

I really love [name_f]Mari[/name_f] with [name_f]Willa[/name_f] !! Both names are short and spunky ! I think what I like most about [name_f]Mari[/name_f] is you could use a longer version or just the sweet and simple one! I also love [name_f]Mari[/name_f] because it’s multi-cultural and internationally used so it’s not tied to a specific ethnicity or time period. ( I do love [name_f]Mar[/name_f] names !)
[name_f]Marielle[/name_f] is perfect because than you get to use 2 names you loved :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: so it feels extra special

[name_f]My[/name_f] second favourite is [name_f]Celia[/name_f] !

From your list, I adore [name_f]Gia[/name_f]. Such a chic name, just like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is. I also like [name_u]Camille[/name_u] but it doesn’t sound like you do enough to use it. [name_f]Celia[/name_f] is nice too but I personally prefer [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is really sweet but I do understand your concern about it sounding like a nickname. I do really like it alongside [name_f]Willa[/name_f] the more I think about it though. [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Mari[/name_f] are fine, just not names I’m particularly drawn to (I adore [name_f]Nell[/name_f] though and think it’s brilliant with Willa).

I love these with [name_f]Willa[/name_f]:

[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]
[name_f]Amélie[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_u]Frankie[/name_u]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]
[name_u]Fern[/name_u]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_u]Noa[/name_u]
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]

Good luck!

I think [name_f]Mariel[/name_f] would be a lovely addition to [name_f]Willa[/name_f]

[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]- what about [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] nn: [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]

[name_f]Gia[/name_f]- This would make a nice nickname for [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]

[name_f]Mari[/name_f]- [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Maren[/name_f] would make nice sisters to [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and would fit [name_f]Mari[/name_f] nicely

[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
Bridget/Birdie
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
Elsie/Elysia
Darcy/Marcy
[name_f]Farrah[/name_f]

Congratulations on your soon-arriving second little girl! [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is a sweet, spunky, interesting name. It’s short, and I’m going to assume your daughter doesn’t go by a regular nickname. I can’t get over your husband commenting that M is the inverse of W, so I’m going ti suggest some more of them, although I think [name_f]Mari[/name_f] is wonderful with [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. [name_f]Marielle[/name_f] feels like too much after streamlined [name_f]Willa[/name_f]:

[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f]
[name_f]Malia[/name_f]
[name_u]Merry[/name_u]

Aw, I have a [name_f]Willa[/name_f] too. :heartpulse: I agree with many of the berries that [name_f]Celia[/name_f] and [name_f]Mari[/name_f] are my favorites from your list.
[name_f]Celia[/name_f] seems artistic, romantic, warm and intellectual to me. I also like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f].
I love the name [name_f]Mari[/name_f]. It’s spunky and a bit unexpected. I would go with [name_f]Mariel[/name_f] (prefer that spelling over Marielle), [name_f]Marta[/name_f], or [name_u]Marian[/name_u] to get to that nickname. [name_f]Mara[/name_f] is pretty, but I can’t get over the Hebrew meaning, bitter.

Other suggestions:
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] (to go with [name_f]Celia[/name_f] from As You Like It;)

From your list,

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] & [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] (yes, very common, but it seems to flow & match, but not obviously)
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] & [name_f]Gia[/name_f] (Gianna maybe)

Good luck!

Congratulations :tulip:

I love [name_f]Willa[/name_f] firstly such a fun classic choice!

[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] ~ I do see the appeal with [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] but personally think the name is too informal next to sassy sophisticated [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] would be better or even [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]. Both [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] & [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] just feel grown up enough for [name_f]Willa[/name_f].

[name_f]Elle[/name_f] ~ completely right vibe for Willa’s sister [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is fabulous however your reservations make me believe she just isn’t right for you. Have you thought of names that get to the nickname [name_f]Elle[/name_f] maybe [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Eloisa[/name_f] or [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]?

[name_f]Mari[/name_f] ~ personally prefer this one as a nickname I prefer [name_f]Marielle[/name_f] despite the compromise concept. I really want to suggest [name_f]Marina[/name_f]. [name_f]Marina[/name_f] is gorgeous, has connections with the sea could get the [name_f]Mari[/name_f] nickname and feels cool next to [name_f]Willa[/name_f].

[name_f]Celia[/name_f] ~ I actually think she’s perfect for you has a similar look to [name_f]Willa[/name_f] feels very classic and feminine easy to spell. Another idea could be [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] or maybe even [name_f]Sicily[/name_f] a name a came across the other idea.

[name_f]Gia[/name_f] ~ Similar vibe to [name_f]Elle[/name_f] definitely works shame hubby isn’t onboard I would like to suggest [name_f]Bria[/name_f] similar sound but I think quirkier.

[name_u]Camille[/name_u] ~ ditch off the list you have so many reservations about this one I would suggest [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] and [name_f]Camellia[/name_f].

From your already vetoed names I literally love them all but I especially love the idea of [name_f]April[/name_f]. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] & [name_f]April[/name_f] is so fun :sparkling_heart:

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helped

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

[name_f]My[/name_f] absolute favourite from all the names you mentioned is [name_f]April[/name_f]. I personally don’t even think it’s a problem that she’s due in [name_f]April[/name_f]. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] & [name_f]April[/name_f] are wonderful together. I know you said you’re not considering it anymore but I just had to mention it.

I also really like [name_f]Elle[/name_f] but I’m not sure about [name_f]Willa[/name_f] & [name_f]Elle[/name_f] as siblings.

I like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] as a nickname but for some reason it doesn’t seem like a full name to me.

I do like [name_f]Mari[/name_f]!

I’m not a fan of [name_f]Celia[/name_f] because I can’t stop thinking it sounds like celiac every time I hear it, unfortunately.

How about [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Gia[/name_f]? It has a wonderful meaning and soft sound.

I’m going to suggest (sorry for any repeats, it just means I agree with others):

[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] or [name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]

[name_f]Alana[/name_f]

[name_f]Brynn[/name_f]

[name_f]Colette[/name_f]

[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]

[name_f]Elena[/name_f]

[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]

[name_u]Everly[/name_u]

[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]

[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]

[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]

[name_u]Jade[/name_u]

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]

[name_f]Nina[/name_f]

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]

[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]

[name_f]Vera[/name_f]

[name_u]Wren[/name_u]

I like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and…
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f] (Jude, Judi)
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] (Ruthie)
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Beth[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_u]Fern[/name_u]
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamy[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessa[/name_f]

Of the names you are considering, I like [name_f]Mari[/name_f] the best, though I might prefer the [name_f]Mary[/name_f] spelling. I wonder if you would consider using a middle name that could be used as a double name. For example….
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] and……
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] (Mary Gwendolyn)
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]

I like the spelling [name_f]Mari[/name_f] if the full name is [name_f]Mariel[/name_f] or [name_f]Marielle[/name_f].

All your choices feel plausible enough. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Gia[/name_f] rank higher for me personally.
