Baby girl in October and stuck on names...

We are having a baby girl in [name]October[/name] and I’m not loving any names yet. Our last name is one syllable (rhymes with Horns). Here is a list of names we’re considering:

[name]Amelia[/name] - too popular?
[name]Annabelle[/name] - husband doesn’t like it
[name]Cecily[/name] - don’t like [name]CeCe[/name] nn
[name]Charlotte[/name] - too popular?
[name]Corina[/name] - have nieces [name]Caroline[/name] and [name]Nina[/name], too close?
[name]Eleanor[/name] - have niece [name]Eloise[/name], too close?
[name]Eliza[/name] - don’t like [name]Liza[/name] nn
[name]Felicity[/name] - husband thinks it’s too many syllables
[name]Fiona[/name] - Shrek?
[name]Molly[/name] - too cutesy?
[name]Nora[/name] - doesn’t sound great with last name

We also have a son named [name]Calvin[/name], so we may want our daughter to not have a C name so they have different initials.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

With one syllable surname that rhymes with Horns, I would eliminate [name]Nora[/name], [name]Corina[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name] right off the bat due to the repetitive “or/on” sounds. If your hubby doesn’t like [name]Annabelle[/name] then it’s off the table too. Personally, I like the longer, multi-syllabled names best with a short last name.

3 Faves

[name]Felicity[/name] - I think this name flows the best with your surname.
[name]Cecily[/name] - If you don’t mind your two children sharing an initial, this would be wonderful with [name]Calvin[/name].
[name]Amelia[/name] - This sounds pretty with a short surname

[name]Amelia[/name]- I’ve only ever met one [name]Amelia[/name], I think it’s quite pretty!
[name]Annabelle[/name]- I don’t like it either
[name]Cecily[/name]- Pretty, but I don’t like [name]CeCe[/name] as a nn either.
[name]Charlotte[/name]- nms, really popular
[name]Corina[/name]- It’s pretty, but it is practically your nieces names smooshed together
[name]Eleanor[/name]- I don’t think it’s too close to [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]- I don’t like [name]Liza[/name] either, maybe [name]Ellie[/name] as a nn?
[name]Felicity[/name]- nms, and for a lengthy name it doesn’t come with an obvious nn
[name]Fiona[/name]- I think it’s cute
[name]Molly[/name]- Not a fan
[name]Nora[/name]- Probably my favorite of your name choices, I think it’s really pretty.

[name]Amelia[/name] - I don’t think it’s too popular, but I prefer the [name]Emilia[/name] spelling. I think it looks prettier and isn’t nearly as popular. Plus, it’s Shakespearean.

[name]Annabelle[/name] - Not a fan of this either. Sorry.

[name]Cecily[/name] - If you don’t like [name]CeCe[/name], have you considered [name]Celia[/name] instead?

[name]Charlotte[/name] - Not a fan of this. But yes, if popularity is a concern, this one is way too popular.

[name]Corina[/name] - If you see your nieces often, yeah, I think it’s too close.

[name]Eleanor[/name] - [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Eloise[/name] don’t bother me. They’re different enough that I think it’s fine. Plus, there are nicknames you can use (like [name]Nora[/name]) to be different.

[name]Eliza[/name] - What about naming her [name]Elisa[/name]? You get rid of the [name]Liza[/name] nickname then. Or you can name her [name]Elizabeth[/name] and call her any number of names from that – [name]Libby[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], etc. to avoid [name]Liza[/name].

[name]Felicity[/name] - Not a fan. Sorry.

[name]Fiona[/name] - Ditto.

[name]Molly[/name] - I like this, but I think it needs a more formal name with the nickname [name]Molly[/name]. Maybe [name]Margaret[/name]?

[name]Nora[/name] - You could use [name]Nora[/name] as a nickname for [name]Eleanor[/name] and you avoid the last name issue since most people who call her by the first and last name will be using her full first name.

My favorites from your list are [name]Amelia[/name] (though I like [name]Emilia[/name]) and [name]Eleanor[/name].

I love [name]Charlotte[/name], Annablle, [name]Fiona[/name], and [name]Felicity[/name] .

With [name]Calvin[/name], I like [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name] (I think people today would more likely nn her [name]Ellie[/name] or [name]Elle[/name]…[name]Liza[/name] is dated and probably wouldn’t come to most peoples’ minds first) best from your choices.

I think your best options are [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Fiona[/name], and [name]Molly[/name].

I can’t see people shortening [name]Eliza[/name] to [name]Liza[/name] very much-- I agree with claireelise, it’s dated. Calling her [name]Ellie[/name] would be a good way to almost name her [name]Eleanor[/name]. I think [name]Eliza[/name] fits best with [name]Calvin[/name].

I disagree with [name]Mischa[/name]— “[name]Fiona[/name] Horns” sounds fine to me. I don’t think the Shrek association is anything to worry about–it’s not like she’s a bad character.

And if your husband is worried about the length of [name]Felicity[/name], maybe decide on a nickname? I’ve heard [name]Cricket[/name], [name]Flick[/name] and [name]Fee[/name] as nns for [name]Felicity[/name].

I like [name]Corina[/name], I don’t think it’s a problem with your nieces. It isn’t the same as, say, naming your baby the exact same name as your sister or sister-in-law or your girlfriend’s baby. Then it would be a problem. I love [name]Eliza[/name], and you can always call her [name]Ellie[/name] instead. [name]Fiona[/name]-personally, I didn’t even think of Shrek until you mentioned it. I think it’s a great name!

[name]Hope[/name] this helps! Good luck!

I love:

[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name]

[name]Amelia[/name] - It’s a nice name, though it is getting quite popular. If you like it more than the popularity bugs you though, I’d say use it.
[name]Annabelle[/name] - I wouldn’t use a name my OH couldn’t get on board with if he/she had a valid reason for not liking it.
[name]Cecily[/name] - I don’t think people would automatically nickname her. Especially because [name]Cecily[/name] ends in a -ee sound so it almost has the nickname sound in its formal form.
[name]Charlotte[/name] - Much too popular.
[name]Corina[/name] - [name]Caroline[/name] isn’t too similar to it, but [name]Nina[/name] is a little too close. If you can get past it, use it, if you think it will be an issue, nix it.
[name]Eleanor[/name] - It’s not too similar to [name]Eloise[/name] in my mind since the end sounds are very different.
[name]Eliza[/name] - Considering [name]Liza[/name] is 4/5 of the name, I would be wary of using this if you don’t like [name]Liza[/name].
[name]Felicity[/name] - Maybe if you choose a one-syllable MN he would be okay with this?
[name]Molly[/name] - not too cutesy. My cousin has a [name]Molly[/name]. It’s not my style but it’s all right.
[name]Nora[/name] - Great name, but it does soudn like it would clash with the last name, so I’d nix this one. You could use [name]Eleanor[/name] nickname [name]Nora[/name], that way you still get both names, but the “real name” works with last-name.

Best options, imo:

[name]Cecily[/name] - favorite option
[name]Corina[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] (“[name]Nora[/name]”)
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]

[name]Autumn[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Finola[/name] [name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Analiese[/name] [name]Corina[/name]
Arenna [name]Fiona[/name]

As your surname is Horns, I would eliminate [name]Corina[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Fiona[/name] and [name]Nora[/name].

My personal favourites from the remaining names are [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name]. I’m not a big fan of [name]Amelia[/name] or [name]Felicity[/name]. I prefer the [name]Annabel[/name] spelling over [name]Annabelle[/name]. Names I think sound best with [name]Calvin[/name] are [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Molly[/name]. Good luck!

I personally love [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name]. They both sound great with a one-syllable surname and don’t repeat the -or- sound like [name]Corina[/name], [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name] (also, yes, [name]Corina[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name] are too close to your nieces names, and so is [name]Eliza[/name]). [name]Molly[/name] is great as well, and I love the long forms [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Marguerite[/name], neither of which are crazy popular right now. [name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Calvin[/name] would be great together! I honestly don’t like [name]Cecily[/name] at all; [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Annabelle[/name], and [name]Charlotte[/name] are okay, but I think you have some really beautiful options with [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Fiona[/name] or [name]Margaret[/name]/[name]Molly[/name].

If you’re worried about popularity, [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name] are very close (#178 and #209) in the Top 1000 right now, while your son’s name, [name]Calvin[/name], is #189 on the boys’ list, right between them.

I also really like these with “Horns”

[name]Rosemary[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Miranda[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Gwendolen[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Madeleine[/name]

P.S. I would really really love it if someone with a baby born in [name]October[/name] used “[name]October[/name]” as a middle name.

Good luck!
