Baby girl name help!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I need help naming my baby girl. We have a son named [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and our last name starts with M. My husband and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] but I’m worried it’s becoming too popular. I also love the names [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. I don’t love the nicknames for [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] though, and I worry that [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] seems like a nickname not a full name. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated!

First of all, congratulations! I think [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is really pretty, but if it’s too popular in your area, then maybe there are some others. [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] to me does sound like a full name, and it’s really pretty too. Some other names include
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

I adore [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], i just don’t understand why people fret so much over nicknames, they will either happen or they won’t, personally, I think best not to force it.

Thank you!! [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] is my sister’s name and I love all your other suggestions. Nice to hear you think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is fine by itself too!

That’s good advice about the nicknames. I suppose if I love those names the most, I shouldn’t discount them over the nn. Thank you!

I love [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. I do think the nicknames for [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] are a shame since it’s such a pretty full name. [name_f]Franny[/name_f] and Cesca are OK though and you could try to discourage nicknames.

I also prefer [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] as a nickname, but I think it can work on its own. In the name lists from the 1800s and early 1900s there are a lot of nickname names in the top 50 or so, so nickname names have been given as full names for a while. I like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] as a full name for [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] but it might be too tied to Frozen right now. [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is OK too, if a little lispy. [name_f]Elise[/name_f] or [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] could possibly work, or maybe [name_f]Ella[/name_f] with an S or C middle name like [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]?

I really love [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], and I really haven’t heard it much around where I live. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] sounds stunning.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and I love it with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. With regard to nicknames, I am a teacher and I can tell you that the majority of my students go by their full names in school, at least by their teens. Most of my Elizabeths, Isabellas, and Olivias and Genevieves and Eleanors go by their full name, or at least always write out their name in full, although their peers may occasionally call them by abbreviated versions. That said, I have had a [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] called [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] and another one called [name_u]Fran[/name_u], but if the students hadn’t specifically requested that, it never would have happened. I wouldn’t worry about other people imposing a nickname, but there is always the chance that the child will choose it.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I’m currently thinking these are my top 3 options…

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] (not sure what mn)

Thoughts?

[name_f]Mira[/name_f] is probably my favorite of the individual names, although it does feel quite different in style next to a [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. I really love [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] as a combo and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] as a sibling for [name_m]Charles[/name_m]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]! Another bonus is that you wouldn’t have to deal with [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]'s nicknames if it’s in the middle spot! Same goes for [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], really.

(Since you said your concern with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] was that it feels too nickname-y for a full first name, I assumed [name_m]Charles[/name_m] was your son’s full first name, with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] as a nickname. If it’s just [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] though, then I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] would still be on the table!)

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] might be nice.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is stunning!

I love [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and think they all go well with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] are both lovely combos (I love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] too and it’s just perfect with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]). What about [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]? I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is a full name as is, so don’t worry about that.

Names don’t have to be shortened - you use the full name and correct people if they shorten it. Though I do love several nns for [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] - particularly [name_f]Fancie[/name_f]. (There’s a [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Hardy[/name_m] novel in which the heroine is [name_f]Fancy[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u] - gorgeous!)

What about [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]? [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] have that same nickname vibe and sound nice together. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is also pretty. I think you would also like [name_f]Sosie[/name_f] , [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] (I don’t know how popular it is for you) and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] reminds me too much of Frozen and while [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is becoming more popular, I don’t expect there to be tons of [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]'s in your daughters classes.

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] are lovely but I think [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] “matches” [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].
Maybe [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is something to consider? Might be too similar to [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] though

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is a great name and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] sound nice together. I would go with that one.
