Baby girl name - stuck!

The name [name_f]Libby[/name_f] sounds adorable with our older daughter’s name. I think that is one reason why we like it. Thanks so much for your thoughts!

I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] with [name_f]Joy[/name_f]. Usually with name berry the idea of a sibset comes up and where you first has three syllables this seems to fit best.

I will say with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] there are A LOT of associated nn’s some where you love [name_f]Libby[/name_f] to maybe make sure you’re aware of all the possibilities that you might end up with throughout the years. I have a friend by this name who goes by [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] seems more nn proof along those lines.

Elizabeth [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is my vote!

We are down from 4 choices to 2. :slightly_smiling_face: Thank you all for your suggestions!

Our favorites are:
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]) OR just [name_f]Libby[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]

For anyone who has a formal name and has been called another name almost exclusively, what are your feelings about this? Were you thankful for the formal name to fall back on? Was it confusing?

Neither of us go by nicknames, and neither does our daughter, so nickname land is new territory!

I’m not a fan of [name_u]Shelby[/name_u], but the rest are fine. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

Also, that’s me. I’m glad that I have a formal name: [name_f]Imagine[/name_f] it on a job application, or in court. It would be strange & lose her a few positions, for sure! [name_f]My[/name_f] family consistently calls me by a NN but I’m glad I have a formal one for those special occasions.

I strongly disagree with this.

Nowadays, it’s very acceptable for people to go by a “preferred name” in professional settings. Especially with the shift towards respecting people’s ability to express themselves how they see fit.

Everyone I know who has a preferred name, does not have a problem with jobs or court (but honestly, of they were dealing with the court, they would have bigger problems than their name…)

Many job applications include a box for one’s preferred name. I have helped people (who go pretty exclusively by their nickname) with their resumes. It all depends on what they are most comfortable with. Some people just use their given name. Some people put it in quotes - in this case it would look like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “[name_f]Libby[/name_f]” Surname. Some people only do their first initial, like this - E. [name_f]Libby[/name_f] Surname. All are acceptable.

And if an employer is judging someone for having a nickname that is different than what their born with, you’re honestly better off not working there anyway.

I second the suggestion of [name_f]Lisbeth[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f], nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. She will have a gorgeous, sophisticated full name to fall back on and an adorable nickname. [name_f]Lisbeth[/name_f] is a little more unexpected than [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and it has the added advantage of starting with the same letter as the nickname–something I prefer as a general rule.

Have you thought of [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]? It would give you the nickname “[name_f]Libby[/name_f]”.

Yes, but nicknames like that can seem very juvenile ([name_f]Libby[/name_f] isn’t so bad). I have a friend named [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as a given name & she has gotten bullied for it. Also, according to an article I read, someone named [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a given named would just get called [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] automatically in formal settings…?

And I agree that there would be bigger problems in court, but it would still be a PROBLEM.

I’m not crazy about [name_f]Lisbeth[/name_f], [name_f]Lilibeth[/name_f], etc. These names sort of feel like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] with some letters missing. I do appreciate the suggestions though!

My favorite is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f], then [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f], then [name_u]Shelby[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f].

Libby is totally a standalone given name for me! I know a [name_f]Libby[/name_f], she’s about 12 now and she’s never had an issue just being called [name_f]Libby[/name_f] : )
