Hello Everybody! My husband and I are due with a baby girl in [name]April[/name] and we are in love with the name Valkyrie and I was wondering what everyone else thought about the name! Thanks in advance! ~[name]Danielle[/name]~
Usually I like names that are related to mythology, but I’m not sure about Valkyrie. First, it’s not actually a name. And pardon me if I’m wrong, I am on my phone and can’t really Google much, but isn’t valkyries in mythology related to tragic endings?
What about [name]Valerie[/name] or [name]Reverie[/name]?
Totally agree with minorbeatrice. I’ve read aboout valkyrie before and it’s not something that people want for their beloved daughter. [name]Valerie[/name] will be so levely.
The Valkyrie’s (meaning “chosen of the slain”) are the women who choose who lives and who dies in battle in Norse Mythology. They also choose who goes to Valhalla or not. Personally, I don’t think it’s the worst, but I don’t like it either. [name]Valerie[/name] is close if you just like the sound. If it’s the mythology that’s important, the Valkyrie’s have some very nice name:
[name]Eir[/name] – peace
Herja
[name]Kara[/name] – the wild one
Rota – storm
Sigrun – victory rune
I don’t think of it as name but more a description – like the [name]Wagner[/name] opera and to me its dark, complex and very Germanic…
The name is okay sounding, but is rather popular among “white power” Nazi types in the [name]Pacific[/name] Northwest. Anything Norse mythology related makes me wonder if the parents are Aryans because those tend to be the majority of folks using these names.
[name]Just[/name] something to consider if you aren’t one of those [name]Aryan[/name] folks
Never knew that…fascinating.
i just remember it as a ring tone on my old Nokia phone and it sounded like something Darth Vader would walk down a hall way too…
very dark…and just not right for a little girl…unless you are a white supremacist …in which case…are you?
I kind of think it’s cute and spunky, but I do get what everyone’s saying about. Then again I also like Harlequin and Shylock and a lot of other negative seeming names. I especially love how it has the normal person nn [name]Val[/name], but also a more unique [name]Erie[/name]. -shrug- I think with connotations it all depends on the kid.
We have a son [name]Wolfgang[/name] and I did look at Valkyrie. I think It was just a too “choose who dies” kinda name for me. I love the sound of it though and it was on the list for a minute. We are of [name]German[/name] descent and I am not a white power person.
This is exactly what I was thinking. I really would not suggest using it. I think [name]Valerie[/name] is a gorgeous alternative though
I’m surprised so many assume that people who name their children after Norse mythology to be neo-Nazis. I’d assume they merely liked the mythology and the meaning. [name]Remember[/name], Valkyrie was the code name of the operation to assassinate Hitler!
That being said: I like the idea but I wouldn’t use it at least not as the first name. I second the suggestions of [name]Valerie[/name], [name]Reverie[/name] and the names of the Valkyries themselves. [name]Freya[/name]'s another suggestion, and not Norse, but [name]Artemis[/name] and [name]Diana[/name].
Thank you guys for your thought on the name! I really like different names and it is still a very strong consideration for us! But thank you for your opinions! Oh yea and we are defiantly not the “white power” type. My husband is african american and my two little boys are mixed between caucasion, native american, and african american!
I just can’t imagine it on a person at all. The [name]Val[/name] part is spunky and the [name]Kyrie[/name] part is pretty and different, but I don’t like it.
Some suggestions:
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Vienna[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name]
[name]Haven[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Avalon[/name]
Avonlea
[name]Cambria[/name]
Carmindy
I can’t hear the name without the (awesome) [name]Wagnerian[/name] piece playing in my mind and imagining the [name]German[/name] spelling Walkuere. I also think of the [name]Tom[/name] [name]Cruise[/name] movie, which isn’t bad or anything, but is just weird.
I think [name]Valeria[/name] [name]Kyrie[/name] would be a lovely name that would evoke it and even have Valkyrie as a nickname if you wanted, while having its own great meaning ([name]Valeria[/name] meaning brave, valor, and [name]Kyrie[/name] from the praise phrase [name]Kyrie[/name] Eleison, although if that is not your religious background i suppose that might be weird).
I know a lady who named her daughter Valkyrie. She loves it and hasn’t regretted it at all. I think its kind of cool!
