[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!
I am 22 weeks pregnant with my first baby (girl) and struggling to find a baby name both me and my partner love.
We had our heart set on [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (Me-La) however our niece is [name_f]Myla[/name_f] (My-La) and although her parents have told us to go for it, I just worry they’re too similar. I love the names [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] but these are cousins names so we can’t use them. I also like [name_f]Mia[/name_f] but it’s always on the most popular list and that puts me off. I care for a [name_f]Maya[/name_f] (mya) so I can’t use this unfortunately too, although I love it. We’d be shortening [name_f]Mila[/name_f] to [name_f]Mimi[/name_f].
The names we do like but don’t feel like ‘the one’ are:
[name_f]Marla[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Romy[/name_f]
[name_f]Elia[/name_f] (eh-Lee-ah)
We’re thinking middle name [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] (although would like to hear other suggestions too) and Last name is [name_m]Spencer[/name_m].
[name_f]Mila[/name_f] is cute, but I understand why you probably can’t use it.
suggestions:
[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ayda[/name_f] (eye-da)
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (too wordy with Autumn?)
[name_f]Addie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] (like [name_f]Mila[/name_f] but not too close to Myla)
names that might get you [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] as a nickname:
[name_f]Madison[/name_f]
[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_f]Misty[/name_f]
[name_f]Mina[/name_f]
[name_f]Amina[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
I LOVE [name_f]Millie[/name_f] but [name_f]Emelia[/name_f] goes by [name_f]Millie[/name_f], so had to write that one off too. [name_m]Loving[/name_m] your suggestions tho and defo some I hadn’t thought of there, thank you!
Mila is lovely but similar to Myla. I think it depends on how close they will be growing up. For example me and my sister are very close in each others pockets so it would be a bit much if my sister called her daughter Leila as my child is Lilia. If she completely loved Leila I wouldn’t persuade her not to use the name but I think it would be confusing. However if I only saw my sister a handful of times a year I think it would be fine. Honestly I feel this whole predicament is dependent on how often you see your niece and whether you as a family would find it too confusing. Within my family due to having lots of dyslexic relatives this would be too much but this how dilemma is really personal to your set up. I’m in the UK Mila ranks at no.39 in the popularity charts and Mia is no.9 so of course Mia is more popular but honestly it’s not a huge popularity discrepancy. I would appreciate if Mila was outside the top 100s but she’s not she’s still well used. I think Mia would be a good alternative.
I can see that you love that M sound I think Marla + Marlie would be cute alternatives other ideas could be…

I see my niece quite often and she will be 3 when baby is born so there’s still quite a small age gap in the scheme of things. They have all told me they love the name and to go for it but I just can’t unhear the Me/My sounds.
These are some great suggestions! I love [name_f]Isla[/name_f] but it rhymes with [name_f]Myla[/name_f], it’s so hard isn’t it!! [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is gorgeous, I also love [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] and Romy:heart_eyes: thank you so much for taking the time to share your suggestions, I’ll go through them with my partner tonight! Xx
I think with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] because they look so different it’s not as in your face. For example [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] has a cousin [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] with an age gap off 15 months and even though they share similar sounds it’s not in your face. Maybe [name_f]Inaya[/name_f] or [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] could be an alternative to [name_f]Isla[/name_f]? Also you may like [name_f]Nova[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Harper[/name_f].
I love the name [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], I’ve stolen that one from you and added to the list too! [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] is so pretty, I’ve not heard that one before!
A few people suggested my first thought which was [name_f]Mina[/name_f]! it’s such an adorable, sweet name and is not too matchy with [name_f]Myla[/name_f].
So, I personally wouldn’t use Mila if you already have a Myla, you’ll have people stumbling over the names and I think they’ll make the names feel less distinct and special in a way. I know a young girl Mila and it also gets a fair bit of confusion - Me-la, My-la, Mill-a. I really like Mia but there are so many around, it’d too popular for me to choose. I also don’t know if Mila or Mia (or a two syllable name ending in A - or Er for that matter) is the best choice with your last name - though not sure that’s true, as like Lara with Spencer but not Mia or Cora…).
I think for Mimi, I would choose Mary (Mary is a top 5 name for me, and Mary Autumn Spencer is about as elegant and cheerful as they get and will age so well - it’s a name for all ages esp with Mimi as a nn, you could use Marlie as a nn, and Maisie too, see initials).
I also really like these names with Mimi as a nickname: Imogen Autumn (Mimi/Immy); Naomi Autumn; Emilia/Amelia Autumn (which gives Mimi or Millie - but is Millie too close to Myla?); Jemima Autumn (if no problems with Jemima, it’s a beautiful name in UK and Australia etc, also gives Jem/Jemma); and Romilly Autumn (nn Romy/Millie as well as Mimi)
Other names you might like:
Rosanna
Zoe
Chloe
Matilda (could nn Marlie as well as Tilly/Tilda)
Marley (different spelling, pretty sure same meaning)
Marlowe (but doesn’t flow as well to Autumn)
Serena
Tabitha (love Tibby as nickname)
Rosemary (nn Romy/Rosie)
Josephine (Josie/Posey/Phina)
Willamina (Willa/Mina/Minnie)
Phoebe (how lovely is Phoebe Autumn Spencer! )
[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was [name_f]Mariah[/name_f], in order to get to the nn [name_f]Mimi[/name_f]. [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] would work too, or [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]. Oh, and [name_f]Marissa[/name_f]!
I’ll also suggest [name_f]Melody[/name_f] or [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], since you have [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] on your list - you might like that same rhythm with an M name.
[name_f]Meredith[/name_f] could also work.
[name_f]Marlene[/name_f] or [name_f]Marlena[/name_f], since your’re not sure on [name_f]Marla[/name_f] or [name_f]Marlie[/name_f] - or perhaps [name_f]Martine[/name_f] or [name_f]Martina[/name_f]?
Also - [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] is adorable and not very common.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Finding the perfect name is so tricky but you’ve had some stunning suggestions!
I’ll add
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mitzi[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
Meridwen [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Meri[/name_f], [name_f]Winni[/name_f] or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f]
[name_m]Miller[/name_m] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milli[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milli[/name_f] or [name_f]Cammi[/name_f]
Milenna [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (at home) [name_f]Enna[/name_f] when with your niece
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milly[/name_f] or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] or [name_f]Romy[/name_f]
Oh gosh that’s such a tough situation. I can understand the names feeling almost unusable but it’s good Myla’s parents are giving you guys the okay to choose [name_f]Mila[/name_f] if you want !! At the end of the day I say go with what you love most even if it is close to the cousin names (you already have an okay and maybe “similar” names might bond the cousins a bit!)
