Baby girl needs a name!

[name_f]My[/name_f] DH and I have a terrible time agreeing on girl names. We’ve put off figuring out a name for this little one, but she’s due in a few weeks and needs a name.

This is the our current list. Her middle name will be [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] after a family member, and we have a short, one syllable last name. Our DD’s name is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], but we call her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] about half of the time. So, she will probably have a nickname that’s used part of the time, too.

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (really like it but worried about confusion with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] (DH’s favorite because he loves the nn [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. I like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] but am not a fan of [name_u]Izzy[/name_u].)
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (Again, DH wants to call her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], and [name_f]Liz[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] aren’t nn options.)
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

We could really use opinions and suggestions, if you have some, related to the list above. We like more traditional names and aren’t too worried about popularity. [name_m]Both[/name_m] of our other children were given names that weren’t very popular at the time but have since become much more common. We know that there are no guarantees that a less common name now won’t be the new “it” name in a year or two.

I love your children’s names. I think [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is very pretty. I think, at least where I am, that if it is confused with a name it will be [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. But, I don’t think there will be any confusion.

Suggestions:
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (could be [name_f]Celia[/name_f] or CC for short)
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (GG, [name_f]Gia[/name_f], [name_u]Georgie[/name_u])
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (I’ve always loved [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] together)
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Alli[/name_f], Lissy)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]/[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_u]Gray[/name_u],[name_f]Gracie[/name_f])
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Ginny[/name_f])
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Tilly[/name_f], [name_u]Matty[/name_u])
[name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

You have gorgeous choices! With [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], I like:

[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (sorry, not crazy about the E spelling).

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is beautiful! [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is one of my favorites, but I’m worried about the confusion with [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. Other suggestions are [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Lydia[/name_f].

I also like the name [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], but not the nickname [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a good choice, but I prefer the spelling [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]. Good luck!

I don’t think you can use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], especially if you call her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is PERFECT as a sister for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. It’s gorgeous and has [name_f]Annie[/name_f] as a nn option. [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]- so cute!

I also love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. That would be cute with [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as well.

I’d definitely stay away from names staring with [name_f]El[/name_f] or names that could possibly be nick named [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite from your list is probably [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], even though I’m not a huge fan of siblings with the same initials, it is a pretty name.

Some suggestions-

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Liv[/name_f], Oli)
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f])
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucille[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Lucy[/name_f])
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Mae[/name_f])
[name_f]Juliana[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (jules, julie/a)
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (anna)
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

Good luck!

Your list is beautiful. Some of them sound too close to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] for my ears as they lead to the [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] nn ([name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]) and with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] being a hot name, [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] will definitely get mistaken for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] once in awhile, so I’d nix it if that’s your worry.

[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] sounds great. I wouldn’t worry too much about the nn, since maybe she’ll go by a different nn once you/your kids meet her ([name_u]Bell[/name_u], [name_u]Isa[/name_u], etc) or maybe [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] will grow on you once it’s the name of YOUR daughter…
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is also lovely.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I like this syllable flow best. I’ve seen a few Essies in the world lately and I think that’s super cute. It also starts an E-trend for your girls. HOWEVER, I think it is too close to [name_m]Asher[/name_m].
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. This has always been a favourite. I like how different it is from [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], yet sounds great together. You’d start an A-E-A trend.

I think [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] is my vote, with [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] coming a very close second.

Have you considered:
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - I like the vowel-initial trend, plus sounds great with the sibset. It builds on the syllables - 2 - 3 - 4.
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] - your DH could still get [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] from this, but there are some other nn options in there (Cress, [name_m]Sid[/name_m], [name_f]Cece[/name_f]) Although that would make an alliteration with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] if you mind that.

Based on your children’s names, I’d take [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] off your list - [name_f]IMO[/name_f] the “[name_f]El[/name_f]-” names are too close to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellie[/name_f], and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] is too similar to [name_m]Asher[/name_m].

That leaves:

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] but I do imagine it would get confused with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. Other than that (and maybe just depite it), this would be a lovely choice.

[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - Also very pretty, and stylistically it sounds great with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. Would you be OK with your husband calling her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] and you just calling her [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Bella[/name_f]? The other thing is, [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/le is very popular in some areas - depending where you are it may already be pretty common (compared with [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] which you say weren’t very popular when you named them).

[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - This is probably my favourite on your list. Vintage but familiar and not too popular as far as I know, and lots of possible nicknames. Great flow with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and a single-syllable surname.

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I don’t think [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] necessarily sounds too close to [name_m]Asher[/name_m], but [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/[name_u]Abbie[/name_u]/[name_u]Abbey[/name_u] would sound too close to [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. If you planned to only call her [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] I would imagine it wouldn’t get too confusing. I’ll admit I’m tired of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] - it got really popular in my area and I think it needs a rest - but that may not be the case for you. Objectively it’s a lovely name in and of itself and the flow with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] works fine.

There have been some great suggestions already - [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] would be lovely.

I think [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] are both lovely. [name_f]Esther[/name_f] would be probably be my third favorite but like others have said, it is so similar to [name_m]Asher[/name_m].

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]? I guess there isn’t really a nickname for that… Other suggestions:

[name_u]Morgan[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Anna[/name_f])
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (nn could be CC/[name_f]Cece[/name_f])
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

I really love [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and the nn [name_u]Abby[/name_u] is so sweet. I know it is very popular but I have never met one anywhere. [name_f]Nor[/name_f] do I know anyone who has considered it so even though I know its popular I don’t look at it and think Meganame. It would get my vote, it is gorgeous. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] would be my second choice. Best of luck deciding!

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]- love this! possible nickname [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] sounds adorable with [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f]-i agree, I like the full name, but not [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]-not quite sure about this one
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]-not a big fan
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]-cute, nickname [name_f]Essie[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]-too common
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]-the [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] spelling is more unique, nicknames like [name_m]Eli[/name_m], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], etc.

More suggestions:
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

I love all of your choices! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Esther[/name_f]! I love it!

Here are a few other suggestions.

[name_f]Amerie[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Liza[/name_f]/[name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]
[name_f]Zuzu[/name_f]
[name_f]Hester[/name_f]
[name_f]Lizbeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Lizbet[/name_f]
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]- I know an [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and nearly everyone thinks it is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f]- Other nickname options: [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_u]Isa[/name_u], Sabby.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]- [name_m]Way[/name_m] too close to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I would get rid of this and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]- Beautiful! I love the nickname options [name_f]Susie[/name_f], [name_f]Sanne[/name_f], [name_f]Sanna[/name_f], [name_f]Sannie[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Suki[/name_f], Sani and Zu.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]- I adore this! The nickname [name_f]Essie[/name_f] is darling too.
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]- NMS, but a lovely name.
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]- [name_m]WAY[/name_m] too close to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favourites: [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. I am leaning more towards [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] though.

Suggestions: [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], [name_f]Cate[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f], etc.), [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f].

I disagree. You can easily use a name like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] with her sister [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f]). You just can’t use an [name_f]El[/name_f] variation as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s nickname. Fortunately, since she’s [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], she has a ton of nickname options. If you start calling her [name_f]Libby[/name_f] or [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], there’s no problem.

Of the names you mentioned, my favorite is [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] are great together). [name_f]My[/name_f] second choice is [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], then [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

[name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and _______ [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

These are my top three favorites.
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - Other nn [name_u]Bell[/name_u], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_u]Isa[/name_u], [name_f]Sasa[/name_f].
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I really like the name [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]

Thank you all so much for the feedback and suggestions!!!

We’ve decided to take [name_f]Esther[/name_f] off the list. Tonight when we were talking about names, we were talking about the name “[name_f]Esther[/name_f]” and our son ([name_m]Asher[/name_m]) thought we were talking about him. Also, thank you for the comments about the potential [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emily[/name_f] confusion. We hadn’t considered that.

After reading through the comments, I have some other questions.

Would it make [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] more usable if we were planning on calling her something like [name_f]Libby[/name_f] or [name_f]Betsy[/name_f]?

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are two of my favs, but DH has nixed those. There are several others that I really like but that are unusable for various reasons (unfortunate initials, family members with those names, etc.). I also love the names [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Would it be out of place to have a short name like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] in a family where all of the women have longer names?

I love the [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] suggestion. [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] has many nn possibilities: [name_f]CeCe[/name_f]/CiCi, [name_u]Ilia[/name_u], [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], [name_f]Cecile[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] would all sound great with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. However I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] sound the best together. I think [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are perfect together. Although [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] are super cute together as well. I love your names!

Suggestions:
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Junia[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]/a
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaux[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] would be best… they are beautiful names that go well with your other children.

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would be more usable for sure if you used a nickname like [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Betsey[/name_f] or even [name_f]Beth[/name_f] (I’m partial to [name_f]Beth[/name_f] for obvious reasons)

I’d stay away from [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]… They are too simple compared to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

Good luck!

[name_f]Beth[/name_f]

I really don’t think it would be out of place to have a shorter name in a family with longer names. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] fit stylistically I think (at least with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m]), which I would imagine more people would notice. And all of these sound great with the middle name [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]!

If you’re concerned about the name’s length, you could go with a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f] variant ([name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], etc) and call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
