Baby Girl No-Name due in 12 weeks - help!

I’ve got major brain-rot from searching for a name for our little girl and hubby’s not far behind. I would thus welcome any and all of your suggestions. Here are the considerations:

  1. Last name – Italian and begins with a P.
  2. We live in Latin American so the name has to be pronounceable in Spanish.
  3. I’m American so the name has to work in English as well.
  4. Our older daughters’ names are [name]Romina[/name] [name]Mariel[/name] and [name]Eleonora[/name] [name]Frances[/name].
  5. The last candidate we were considering was [name]Marcela[/name] [name]Isabel[/name] but I know three Marcelas and I’m not too fond of any one them, so no go.

I’m out of ideas. Please help!

[name]How[/name] about [name]Liliana[/name]?

[name]Susana[/name] (nn [name]Sukie[/name]?)
[name]Valentina[/name]
Virtudes (as a mn)
[name]Zaraida[/name].

Good luck!

Thank you for the great ideas! Please keep them coming – DH and I need to get this sorted out ASAP. Otherwise, I can see the doc handing me the baby after delivery as I crane my neck to look at the nurses’ names tags for inspiration…

[name]Camille[/name] nn [name]Cammie[/name] – really popular here.

[name]Violetta[/name] nn [name]Vi[/name] – DH doesn’t like.

[name]Estella[/name] nn [name]Stella[/name] – makes me think of [name]Melanie[/name] [name]Griffith[/name] (it’s her daughter’s name)

[name]Eloisa[/name] nn [name]Ellie[/name] – too close to [name]Eleonora[/name]

[name]Sarita[/name] – conjures up recent images of [name]Sarita[/name] Montiel, the Spanish actress.

[name]Isadora[/name] nn [name]Izzie[/name] – DH doesn’t like

[name]Amaya[/name] – not our style

[name]Bryony[/name] ([name]Briony[/name]) – will get butchered in Spanish
[name]Calista[/name] nn [name]Cali[/name] – I like it, but can I get DH on board??

[name]Carys[/name] – sounds like a pet name in Spanish.

[name]Esme[/name] – DH will want [name]Esmeralda[/name]. I don’t.

[name]Francesca[/name] nn [name]Frankie[/name]/ Cesca – I’m friends with one but not enough to name my child after her.

[name]Giselle[/name] nn [name]Gigi[/name] – this could work…

[name]Lucia[/name] nn [name]Lucy[/name] – lukewarm.

[name]Oriana[/name] – bad teasing potential in a Spanish-speaking grade school.

[name]Paloma[/name] – our last name begins with P.

[name]Tamara[/name] – like it!

[name]Viviana[/name] nn [name]Vivi[/name] – I [name]LOVE[/name] this name! It was on my original list. DH, however, associates it with someone he doesn’t like. I’m guilty of vetoing some of his choices for the same reason…

[name]Zora[/name] – too close to “zorra,” which means “vixen” here, which is slang for “slut.”

[name]Isela[/name] – sounds similar to the [name]Isabel[/name]/[name]Isabella[/name] group which is as popular here as in the US.
[name]Theresa[/name] – really popular here
[name]Antonia[/name] – One of my original choices. DH doesn’t like it, however.

[name]Adela[/name] - worked with one.
[name]Annunziata[/name] (as a mn, or perhaps nn [name]Annie[/name]) – will get butchered here.
[name]Aurora[/name] – I like this one a lot!
[name]Beatriz[/name] – I like it but DH doesn’t.
[name]Carlotta[/name] – that’s my friend’s DD
[name]Carmela[/name] – that’s my former secretary. [name]Love[/name] her though.
[name]Carmen[/name] – too common
[name]Celia[/name]/[name]Cecilia[/name] – Would have been my first choice, but DH worked with one who was a royal pain. I can’t get around the resulting aversion.
[name]Clara[/name] – DH again. He thinks of [name]Heidi[/name]‘s wheelchair-bound friend. I keep telling him, "But she walked in the end!! All that goats’ milk and fresh mountain air did wonders!!"
[name]Elisabeta[/name] – too close to [name]Eleonora[/name]
[name]Emilia[/name] – DH… Grumble.
[name]Esmeralda[/name] – DH likes it, I don’t. Sorry.
[name]Imelda[/name] – I think shoes. Lots of shoes.
[name]Isabella[/name] (very popular, though) – very, very popular.
[name]Isidora[/name] – I think [name]Dora[/name] the [name]Explorer[/name].
[name]Josefina[/name] – DH…
[name]Lucia[/name] – lukewarm
[name]Magdalena[/name] nn [name]Maggie[/name] – my friend’s DD’s name.
[name]Maria[/name] – it ends up being dropped for the middle name here. [name]Maria[/name] [name]Fernanda[/name] becomes [name]Fernanda[/name], [name]Maria[/name] [name]Cecilia[/name] is [name]Cecilia[/name], etc.
[name]Mariposa[/name] nn [name]Posy[/name] – no
[name]Marta[/name] - another friend’s DD
[name]Nereida[/name] – no
[name]Nieves[/name] – could be akward in English
[name]Paloma[/name] (nn [name]Lola[/name]?) – our last name begins with P
[name]Penelope[/name] – ditto
[name]Perla[/name] – ditto 3
[name]Rafaela[/name] – masculine, no?
[name]Sofia[/name] ([name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name] are very popular, though) – really fashionable here as well
[name]Susana[/name] (nn [name]Sukie[/name]?) – I like it but DH thinks it’s an old-lady name and not in a good way.
[name]Valentina[/name] – a friend’s DD

Our older daughters were so easy to name! We’re going to end up in marriage counseling over this one!

This is a tough one! So many really beautiful names already vetoed for one reason or another . . .

Some more suggestions:
[name]Audrianna[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Simona[/name]
[name]Nicola[/name]
[name]Bibiana[/name]
[name]Alessandra[/name]
[name]Milena[/name]
[name]Gabriella[/name]
[name]Rosalia[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Olga[/name]
[name]Leila[/name]
[name]Antonia[/name]
[name]Vincenza[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name]

I really like [name]Marcela[/name]! Too bad you had to let that one go. [name]How[/name] about:

[name]Clarissa[/name]
[name]Angelica[/name]
[name]Rosalia[/name]
[name]Maricela[/name] - a variant of [name]Marcela[/name]
[name]Adriana[/name]
[name]Amalia[/name]
[name]Tahlia[/name]

Good luck!

Thank you for your suggestions, JLM. It’s really frustating. Neither DH nor I can name the baby a name that brings up negative associations. [name]Hence[/name], I shot down [name]Andrea[/name] and he, in turn, vetoed my beloved [name]Clara[/name] over the [name]Heidi[/name] thing…

I tried to accept [name]Marcela[/name], really I did. My karma – to learn to be more tolerant and forgiving. If worse somes to worst and this baby is born before we’ve decided on a name, I’ll grit my teeth and deal with [name]Marcela[/name].

As for your suggestions:
[name]Clarissa[/name] – DH vetoed it weeks ago.

[name]Angelica[/name] – bad associations, long story.

[name]Rosalia[/name] – no

[name]Maricela[/name] – in Spanish it sounds like “varicela” which means chicken pox.

[name]Adriana[/name] – that’s a contender!

[name]Amalia[/name] – my fave fado singer! I’m going to fight tooth and nail for this one.

[name]Tahlia[/name] – that girl who married [name]Tony[/name] Mottola…

Thank you for your help! Much appreciated.

Sorry for any repeats but how about…

[name]Francesca[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Liliana[/name]
[name]Azura[/name]
[name]Dominique[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Mila[/name]
[name]Abril[/name]
Alonsa
[name]Marina[/name]
[name]Zaida[/name]
[name]Regina[/name]
[name]Blanca[/name]
[name]Cielo[/name]
[name]Clio[/name]
[name]Delores[/name]
[name]Sierra[/name]
[name]Dominga[/name]
[name]Sonora[/name]
[name]Tia[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Beatriz[/name]
[name]Bianca[/name]
[name]Belita[/name]
[name]Solita[/name]

And can I ask, is Amarilla ever used as a girls name in Spanish speaking countries? I know it means Yellow but in English we use [name]Indigo[/name] and [name]Blue[/name] as colour names and Amarilla always sounded like a name to me.

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Kiki[/name],

Amarilla is not used as a name in Spanish.

Thank you for your suggestions. I’m going to bypass the repeats and evaluate the rest:

[name]Lydia[/name] – contender

[name]Azura[/name] – sounds like “basura” which means garbage in Spanish.

[name]Dominique[/name] – lovely name but it’s going to get mangled here.

[name]Florence[/name] – has to be pronounceable in Spanish

[name]Abril[/name] - it’s just a last name in Spanish

Alonsa – only the male version, [name]Alonso[/name], exists

[name]Marina[/name] – DH doesn’t like it

[name]Regina[/name] – it’s as popular here as [name]Emma[/name] is in the States. Two in my DD’s class alone, two more of her friends are also Reginas, etc.

[name]Cielo[/name] – reminds me of “Cielito Lindo” the mariachi tune

[name]Clio[/name] – that’s a car

[name]Delores[/name] – means “pain”

[name]Sierra[/name] – sounds just like “cierra” which means “close” as in “close the door”

[name]Dominga[/name] – last-century name

[name]Sonora[/name] – “banda sonora” means “soundtrack”

[name]Tia[/name] – means “aunt”

[name]Lavinia[/name] – I [name]LOVE[/name] the ancient [name]Roman[/name] names and their derivatives. I was pushing for [name]Livia[/name], for example. DH, however, was unmoved.

[name]Beatriz[/name] – DH doesn’t like

[name]Belita[/name] – sounds like “velita” which means “little candle”

[name]Solita[/name] – means “all by her little self”

Some more Latin names (I know some of these would be difficult to pronounce in Spain Spanish, but as I am less familiar with the Latin American accent, it may be different over there, so I have included them anyway) :

[name]Antonia[/name]
[name]Aquila[/name]

[name]Cassia[/name]
[name]Claudia[/name]
[name]Clementia[/name]
Cloelia
[name]Constantia[/name]/[name]Constantina[/name]
[name]Cornelia[/name]
[name]Decima[/name] (personally I find number names strange when they are not true, but [name]Octavia[/name] is common for children who aren’t the eighth, so perhaps …)
[name]Delphina[/name]
Desideria
Domitia/[name]Domitilla[/name]
Drusa/[name]Drusilla[/name]
[name]Fabia[/name]/[name]Fabiana[/name]/[name]Fabiola[/name]

[name]Felicia[/name]
[name]Flavia[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Florentia[/name]
[name]Floriana[/name]
[name]Francisca[/name]
[name]Herminia[/name] (I just thought ‘hermana’, but apparently this is actually in use in Spanish-speaking countries …)
[name]Honoria[/name]/[name]Honorina[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Juliana[/name]
[name]Junia[/name]
[name]Laelia[/name]

[name]Ursula[/name]
[name]Valeria[/name]
[name]Varinia[/name]
[name]Veronica[/name]
[name]Vibiana[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name].

Good luck!

This is difficult. It seems most of the names suggested you associate with something (usually something bad) too strongly.

[name]Florina[/name]/[name]Florinia[/name]/[name]Florencia[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Esperanza[/name]
[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Caye[/name] (not sure how it’s pronounced)
[name]Romola[/name]
[name]Marion[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]
Adelma
[name]Ambrosia[/name]
[name]Adelina[/name]
[name]Melosa[/name]
[name]Nevada[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name]
Artura
[name]Ester[/name]
[name]Belinda[/name]
[name]Celesta[/name]
[name]Casandra[/name]
[name]Ever[/name] (Is this unisex because I know it’s used for girls in English speaking countries occasionally but I’ve definately heard of an Argentinean man with the name)
[name]Alexis[/name]/[name]Alexa[/name]/[name]Alexandra[/name]/[name]Alexandrina[/name]

That’s the problem. Either I associate the name with something negative or DH does. Never expected that naming a third daughter would be this difficult. We named our first two girls in all of three days each. Now we’re out of untainted names.

That being said, I love [name]Cecilia[/name]. DH hates it. Maybe [name]Belinda[/name]? He just shot down [name]Cassandra[/name]…

Great list Twinkle! I’ll go through it later tonight! Thank you for your help.
