We had our first daughter in [name]June[/name] 2012 and I am now expecting our 2nd daughter in [name]July[/name] 2013! Our daughters name is [name]Edith[/name] [name]Anna[/name] (I know Americans dislike [name]Edith[/name] from a TV character but we are British so this didn’t affect us in the UK). [name]Edith[/name] is growing in popularity here - our daughter was the first in the area to be an [name]Edith[/name] for many many years but there have been two more girls named [name]Edith[/name] born since (possibly after hearing our daughters name - we live in an area of small rural towns & villages so news travels fast). We are looking for another classic old fashioned name ready to be re-used to match & so far have the following list:
I really dislike [name]Beatrice[/name] (unpopular opinion on nameberry I know) but I adore [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name]. I particularly love the nicknames [name]Hattie[/name] and [name]Tillie[/name] and [name]Mattie[/name]. In Australia [name]Matilda[/name] is very popular- I think it’s been around the top 30 for at least that past five years but I hardly ever hear [name]Harriet[/name]…I would have used it but I have a [name]Harry[/name]. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, both fabulous!
Oh and [name]Mabel[/name] is ok but feels clunky when I say it, my DH wanted it for our second daughter but I could never warm to it, although I love the nickname [name]Mae[/name].
Think [name]Beatrice[/name] is my favourite too! We loved [name]Matilda[/name] last time but its very popular in the UK - [name]Edith[/name] had a very similar meaning to [name]Matilda[/name]- it was the old english equivalent to the [name]Norman[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] in the Middle Ages - which was one if the reasons we went for [name]Edith[/name]. But thought it might be cute to have them together.
I also quite like [name]Agnes[/name] my grandmothers name?
My favourite would be [name]Matilda[/name]. But all four names from your list are really nice besides [name]Harriet[/name] which I find very masculine and unappealing.
You might also consider [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Virginia[/name], [name]Martha[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Louise[/name], [name]Georgia[/name], [name]Stella[/name] or [name]Ellen[/name].
[name]Matilda[/name] is my favourite one [name]Harriet[/name] (nn [name]Hattie[/name]) would be my second choice. [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] I don´t like at all. [name]Mabel[/name] sounds a little boring to me and I associate the name [name]Beatrice[/name] with people I know and they come with negative attitudes to me, so that´s a no.
[name]How[/name] about [name]Annabell[/name] ([name]Annie[/name]), [name]Eugenie[/name] ([name]Ginny[/name]) or [name]Layla[/name]?
I think [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Mabel[/name] are just perfect together. It makes me think of the children’s book The Enchanted Castle (first published in 1907) by [name]Edith[/name] [name]Nesbit[/name] - one of the main character’s names is [name]Mabel[/name]!
I really like [name]Mathilda[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] as well, but [name]Mabel[/name] is just too wonderful with [name]Edith[/name]!!!
My vote is for [name]Mabel[/name]! It is gorgeous with [name]Edith[/name] and has a similar, fairly underdiscovered vintage gem feel. [name]Matilda[/name] is also lovely! [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Harriet[/name] aren’t my favourites but I still think they’re great choices
