My daughter was born (early) 2 weeks ago and I was so lost for what to name her that I left the birth certificate blank.
I’ve been calling her [name]Ruby[/name] but have so many doubts about it. Is it a weird name? Is [name]Ruby[/name] the girl in the class who eats glue? Why didn’t I just give her a name that everyone else has? I know it’s a trending name, but it still seems a bit “weird” - is it?
So since I didn’t lock anything in on the birth certificate, I can still give her any name.
Please let me know honest opinions. I can do almost anything. [name]How[/name] does [name]Ruby[/name] compare to [name]Violet[/name] or [name]Ellie[/name] or [name]Julia[/name] or [name]Vivian[/name] or …
And I haven’t even gotten anywhere close to a middle name Please help. My beautiful daughter is asleep in my arms right now, and it kills me that I still really don’t have a name for her.
My last name is similar to “Seefeld” so let’s just go with that for the purposes of a name.
I think [name]Ruby[/name] is a cute name. [name]Violet[/name] & [name]Ellie[/name] are pretty popular too and I don’t care much for [name]Vivian[/name].
[name]Ruby[/name] is gorgeous, there’s nothing weird about it. As a teacher I can assure I don’t think [name]Ruby[/name] sounds like a girl who eats glue ha!
[name]Ruby[/name] Seefeld sounds perfect to me but if you don’t love it maybe it isn’t the one?!
[name]Ellie[/name] is just a nickname, [name]Violet[/name] Seefeld sounds great too but [name]Violet[/name] is probably trendier than [name]Ruby[/name].
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Vivienne[/name] Seefeld or [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name] Seefeld would be gorgeous!
I love [name]Ruby[/name] & [name]Vivian[/name]. [name]Violet[/name] is cute too!
[name]Ruby[/name] isn’t the weird girl imo! It’s pretty popular in the ny area.
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Vivian[/name] is pretty!
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Viola[/name] is nice too.
Also…you could always wait until you feel really certain if you have no deadline. I love my daughters name, but I feel like I didn’t totally know what suited her for months & months! It just took so long for my head to feel clear& for her full personality to come out!
My personal favorite is [name]Julia[/name], its 2nd on my list. Very beautiful. If you love [name]Ruby[/name] go for it! Maybe try out your 2nd favorite for a day or so and see which seems right?
[name]Ruby[/name] is decidedly not the girl who eats glue. She might be the girl who leaps up and dances in the middle of the room. The girl who’s the first in the class to get a boyfriend. But not a glue-eater aka a weirdo.
Why the desire for a name that everyone else has? [name]Do[/name] you think you would then feel more comfortable with the name? That’s definitely not the case for most people, who tend to regret choosing a name they hear coming and going.
I’m curious why you never settled on a name throughout your pregnancy, or even got close to one that you felt some enthusiasm for? Are there names you loved that you shied away from for some reason? We’d love to help you find a name that you are really happy with – and now is the moment to do it!
[name]Hi[/name] [name]Pam[/name] - thank you. Well I think I put more importance than most people do on the “perfect” name, and nothing felt perfect. First, I hate my own name and always have. Secondly, I’ve had this baby solo, so I haven’t had a partner to bounce names off of. And so I’ve relied on my friends (I have a great support network)- but you know when you do that, every name is going to have someone who hates it and someone who loves it.
Years ago I loved the name [name]Sophie[/name]. That’s way too popular now. Throughout this pregnancy I have spent a LOT of time here on nameberry. And I cycled through so many names. From [name]Phoebe[/name](too weird) to [name]Vivian[/name](too stuffy) to Julia (too plain/popular). Nothing ever seemed right and I had a new name every week. [name]Ruby[/name] seemed the most right, although my best friend said it sounded low class and my mom thought it sounded like a 1950’s maid - but I liked it. To me it was vintage sassiness and confidence. And then the baby came 3 weeks early, so I hadn’t truly settled on anything - though not for lack of thought. I guess having had a weird name ([name]Riva[/name] is not my real name - my name is weirder than that) it really was important to me that I not do that to my daughter. So how do I avoid the weird name while also not going for top 10?
Honestly, I know I sound like a mess here, but it’s only with respect to her name! I just want a solid name that SHE is going to love. It’s not about whether I like it really. I want her to love her name. I want one that doesn’t hold her back professionally and doesn’t get her teased but still is something she values. It’s the first real thing I’ve given her.
Congrats on your new little one! I think [name]Ruby[/name] is lovely and if you like it and it suits your daughter-- you should use it. You can always put a more popular name first-- maybe [name]Julia[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Vivian[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] and call her [name]Ruby[/name] (or [name]Jules[/name], or [name]Vivi[/name] or [name]Ellie[/name]). Or, you could put a more popular name second-- [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Grace[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]-- and she could use the mn if she doesn’t like her first name. I think all of the names you thought of-- [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Vivian[/name], [name]Julia[/name], [name]Violet[/name], and [name]Ellie[/name] are lovely and not too weird, stuffy, common, etc. Also, if you think [name]Ruby[/name] has a vintage sassiness and confidence (and I agree with you-- it does!) then you can pass the value of those things to your daughter. Therefore, despite her teen years when she might tell you she can’t stand her name or ask you to call her something else, hopefully, as she matures she can appreciate the things you valued in giving her the name.
Thanks all for continued input. If, as [name]Pam[/name] says, [name]Ruby[/name] is dancing in middle of the room and getting the boyfriend first, does that suggest it’s a bit flighty as a name? Could she be a lawyer or CEO or whatever with her name? Can she be the smart girl in the class with the name [name]Ruby[/name]? Or is she destined to be the girl who dates all the boys and has her head in the clouds?
You may be over thinking this-- what I thought [name]Pam[/name] was saying was that [name]Ruby[/name] was confident and a go-getter so that she could do those things. Of course [name]Ruby[/name] could be a lawyer or CEO or the smartest girl in the class! I’ve worked with 2 different women named [name]Bambi[/name]-- a really bad name to have in terms of stereotyping-- in different offices (one architecture and design and the other a law firm) in 2 different cities-- they were both successful professionally (one did marketing/business development and the other was an attorney) and no one ever forgot their names (and they were not strippers!).
[name]Ruby[/name] is a great name - if you love it, use it! [name]Vivian[/name] and [name]Julia[/name] are lovely as well. [name]Violet[/name] is too popular for me, but I love [name]Viola[/name]. I second the suggestion of [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Viola[/name] as a first/ middle name combo.
I love [name]Ruby[/name]! And I absolutely adore the potential nickname [name]Rue[/name] =)…for me, that is reason enough to use [name]Ruby[/name]. I don’t find it weird in the slightest, it is actually fairly popular in my area (not uber popular, but in the top 100 in my state). I think the name is beautiful and full of character – it is my favorite on your list.
I also love [name]Julia[/name], but it is a little bland (to me) in comparison to [name]Ruby[/name]. [name]Vivian[/name] is just so-so to me, and [name]Violet[/name] is nice but I still like [name]Ruby[/name] more. And [name]Ellie[/name] does nothing for me…I find it babyish and sickeningly common/popular. There are nothing but seas of [name]Ellie[/name]'s around here, so I am sick of hearing it
