Unfortunately we need to replace our broken baby monitor before the newest addition arrives.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a favourite? Or have a bad experience and strongly dislike a specific model?
I am also curious regarding opinions on video monitors. They weren’t a popular thing when I invested years ago, lots of moms I know now have them; however, I am worried about privacy with all the reported security breaches.
The baby monitor I got was at Babies R Us, and it was the Babies R Us brand. It worked well for me. It is a video monitor with a light to indicate how much noise is coming from the room. The light is normally green, but then it goes up to orange and then to red depending on how much noise.
We have a [name_f]Levana[/name_f] video/sound monitor. Since my daughter’s room is on the other side of our house I appreciate the ability to be able to see her as well as hear if she cries. If your child’s room is close to yours a sound only monitor might be a great fit for you again as you’ve said you used one previously.
I think the only issue I’ve heard of people having their video monitors hacked is if they connect to WiFi. Fortunately we don’t have Internet, just data on our cell phones so we don’t worry much about it since there’s no recording of it.
For me being a new father, having a reliable system was necessary that I also could check in on from anywhere. Xeoma is a video management system I recently found that has answered every request I’ve asked of it. Works on [name_m]Mac[/name_m], [name_m]Linux[/name_m], Windows and I’ve been trying to hunt down an easily configurable and out of the box working surveillance system when I finally found Xeoma. I had literally tried at least 10 programs/solutions, sacrificing the [name_m]Linux[/name_m] requirement and even trying Windows programs but, they all failed to provide a complete and reliable solution until Xeoma. Xeoma allowed me to remote access without extra charges or monthly service fees, is expandable depending on how many cameras or video inputs I need which is perfect for any future scaling needs. It also supported my cameras since it uses simple protocols found in any IP camera on the market today and I was able to hook up the hodge-podge of cameras I’d collected without issue and all functioning correctly.
The free trial they offer is a definite smart move as you’re allowed unlimited access of all the features for 4 hours to test everything and ensure it matches what you need. As I mentioned earlier I had attempted several other VMS applications and out of all of them, Xeoma was far more intuitive and simple to install, configure, and operate. They have a minimal and simplistic way to program the provided features which is a blessing coming from the typical [name_m]Linux[/name_m] command line way of doing things or the meaningless and undefinable customization options other VMS provided.
I haven’t kept any baby monitors in my house yet because we hired a nanny to look after my DD for the whole day. Also, I read an article (Should You Invest In A Nanny Cam? | Diamond Personnel) that mentions about the nanny cam. They are saying that monitoring cameras are not that effective.
We have a Lorex sweet peek monitor that we got specifically to avoid security issues. It does not sync with Internet or Wi-Fi, but sometimes it will go “out of range” when our microwave or cell phone interfere. Other than that, it’s easy to install and very user friendly. Has color video & infrared night vision, it zooms but does not pan, and has music and two way radio/sound. It’s about $120 (though amazon always runs deals). We are very pleased with it!
**It also has the option of turning the camera off and keeping the sound on if you decide you don’t want or need the video. I was certain we would only use the sound portion but the video has come in handy more times than I can count and gave tremendous peace of mind in the first month after our little was not in our room! We are getting a second camera to use with baby #2 and will be able to switch between both cameras with only one monitor.
We haven’t purchased our baby monitor yet, but we are not planning on getting a video monitor. I know myself and think that the video monitor will cause me to constantly be staring at it and worrying. Momma has to get some rest too and not go crazy, so we’re depending on just a normal baby monitor here!
