Often when people suggest a name on this site people often reply with “feels like a Teen Mom name”. I then wondered what classifies a ‘Teen Mom’ name, is there a type or do you just get a feeling about a name.
I decided to look at all the names chosen on “16 & Pregnant”, I was shocked for two reaons: 1. some lovely choices made and also 2. some obscure choices made.
I shall share some with you:
Good Choices in my opinion:
[name]Sophia[/name] (very popular yet, beautiful all the same)
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Carly[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Brody[/name] (clever combination of mother’s name [name]Brooke[/name] and father’s name [name]Cody[/name])
[name]Liam[/name]
[name]Austin[/name]
[name]Callie[/name] (sweet name that i’m currently crushing on)
[name]Joshua[/name] and [name]Noah[/name] (twins)
Feels very “Teen Mom”:
[name]Bentley[/name]
[name]Jace[/name]
[name]Brooklyn[/name]
Aliannah and [name]Aleeah[/name] (matchy-too similar sounding for my taste twins)
[name]Nevaeh[/name]
[name]Genesis[/name]
[name]Destiny[/name]
Yonkee spelling used:
Aubri
[name]Aubree[/name] (two variations on the pretty [name]Aubrey[/name], original much better than ‘double e’ or ‘i’, in my opinion)
[name]Aydenn[/name] (very drawn out spelling of [name]Aidan[/name])
[name]Kay[/name]’den (don’t understand trend of apostrophes)
[name]Jordynn[/name] (understand it’s a unisex name, but is -ynn ending necessary to understand it’s a baby girl?)
Anyone else have opinions on these names or have any other names that when they see/hear them just immediatly think “Teen Mom” name?
Good Choices in my opinion:
[name]Sophia[/name] - I agree, beautiful but very popular.
[name]Leah[/name] - I always liked this one.
[name]Carly[/name] - It’s okay, pretty sound, but not one I’d use.
[name]Isaac[/name] - I’m in love with the meaning.
[name]Brody[/name] (clever combination of mother’s name [name]Brooke[/name] and father’s name [name]Cody[/name]) - I don’t like the name, but I love the reasoning.
[name]Liam[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]. It’s one of my top boys names
[name]Austin[/name] - I like it.
[name]Callie[/name] (sweet name that i’m currently crushing on) - I like, but too nicknamey for my liking.
[name]Joshua[/name] and [name]Noah[/name] (twins) - [name]Lovely[/name].
Feels very “Teen Mom”:
[name]Bentley[/name] - It is definitely very Teen Mom, but I love it. It’s my guilty pleasure. I don’t think I’d get to use it though.
[name]Jace[/name] - It’s cute.
[name]Brooklyn[/name] - So overused. [name]Don[/name]'t like.
Aliannah and [name]Aleeah[/name] (matchy-too similar sounding for my taste twins) - Too matchy, and I do not appreciate the butchered spellings.
[name]Nevaeh[/name] - Yup. Teen Momish.
[name]Genesis[/name] - I don’t like it. I prefer [name]Genevieve[/name].
[name]Destiny[/name] - I like it, but a bit…eh.
Yonkee spelling used:
Aubri - No thank you! I already feel that it’s very juvenile name that doesn’t age well, this trendy spelling doesn’t help. [name]Aubrey[/name] is better.
[name]Aubree[/name] (two variations on the pretty [name]Aubrey[/name], original much better than ‘double e’ or ‘i’, in my opinion) - Much better than Aubri, but I like [name]Aubrey[/name] most.
[name]Aydenn[/name] (very drawn out spelling of [name]Aidan[/name]) - I can’t stand the [name]Aiden[/name] trend. But [name]Aiden[/name] is the best spelling.
[name]Kay[/name]’den (don’t understand trend of apostrophes) - I don’t understand it either. It’s horrible. I like this name only because I know two charming boys with the name [name]Kayden[/name]. I’d never use it ever though.
[name]Jordynn[/name] (understand it’s a unisex name, but is -ynn ending necessary to understand it’s a baby girl?) - I don’t like it. [name]Jordan[/name] is best, [name]Jordin[/name] is okay for a girls.
Most of them aren’t absolutely terrible, but when you look at the names paired with the middle names, you wonder what the hell were these kids thinking!
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Laurent[/name] – [name]Sophia[/name] isn’t my style, but it’s not a terrible name. But pairing it with “[name]Laurent[/name]” is horrible!
[name]Leah[/name] [name]Leann[/name] – Seriously.
[name]Carolyn[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] ([name]Carly[/name]) – I actually like this one, surprised that a teenager would pick “[name]Carolyn[/name]”
[name]Isaac[/name] [name]Elliot[/name] – Not terrible, but not my favorite put together.
[name]Brody[/name] [name]Ryan[/name] – I like both names, just not put together.
[name]Liam[/name] [name]Allen[/name] – [name]Just[/name] don’t work together for me.
[name]Austin[/name] [name]Carter[/name] – Reminds me too much of [name]Aaron[/name] [name]Carter[/name].
[name]Callie[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] – [name]Callie[/name] isn’t my style, but the name isn’t terrible, I just don’t think they sound right together.
[name]Joshua[/name] [name]Devon[/name] – It’s not terrible, I’d prefer [name]Devon[/name] [name]Joshua[/name], but overall I like it.
[name]Noah[/name] [name]James[/name] – [name]Love[/name] it.
[name]Bentley[/name] [name]Cadence[/name] – Props for [name]Bentley[/name], it wasn’t very common until [name]Maci[/name] used it. But “[name]Cadence[/name]” is terrible for a middle name. Too big of a name for such a little boy.
[name]Jace[/name] Vahn – I actually like it. I love “[name]Jace[/name]” and I think “Vahn” is unique.
[name]Brooklyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name] – It’s okay. Typical, though.
Aliannah [name]Hope[/name] ([name]Ali[/name]) – This name is terrible. [name]Way[/name] too much letters and it sounds completely made up.
[name]Aleeah[/name] [name]Grace[/name] – “[name]Aleeah[/name]” is a hard name to spell, there are several variations, but this one is terrible. Especially since her mother is [name]Leah[/name].
[name]Nevaeh[/name] [name]Lynn[/name] – I don’t like the idea of “[name]Heaven[/name]” being used as a name, and paired with [name]Lynn[/name] it’s even more terrible.
[name]Genesis[/name] [name]Alexa[/name] – Terrible together. Should have used a different middle name.
[name]Destiny[/name] [name]Brianna[/name] – See above. ^ (I don’t very much like [name]Destiny[/name], either. Sounds kind of stripper-ish to me, no offense to anyone!)
Aubri [name]Rose[/name] – Not terrible, but hate the spelling.
[name]Aubree[/name] [name]Skye[/name] – Middle name doesn’t go.
[name]Aydenn[/name] [name]Anthony[/name] – First off, I HATE that spelling of [name]Aiden[/name]. Second, they sound terrible together!!
[name]Kay[/name]’den [name]Elijah[/name] – [name]Don[/name]'t even get me started on this spelling. And then middle name isn’t terrible, but sounds terrible together.
[name]Jordynn[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Marie[/name] – I think having the unisex first name paired with TWO feminine middle names is tacky.
“[name]Carolyn[/name]'s” parents were the teens who gave their baby up for adoption. That was a name choice made by the adoptive parents.
It’s sad to say but I despise almost all of the names listed aside from [name]Sophia[/name] and a few others, while not being my favorite, aren’t “that bad.” I think the age and mindset of the parents are evident by the names choices (odd spelling, apostrophes, madeup, almost exactly the same as the parents’ names.) They are either extremely unoriginal (Aliannah and [name]Aleeah[/name]) with a mom of [name]Leah[/name]? or they are extremely tacky in their attempt at originality ([name]Aubree[/name], [name]Jordynn[/name], [name]Neveah[/name], [name]Kay[/name]'den)
No one mentioned that [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Laurent[/name] was apparently supposed to be after “[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Loren[/name]” and the teen (and her mom - whose idea it was) apparently didn’t know how to spell [name]Loren[/name]. THEN - the teen decided to add the “t” to the end of [name]Lauren[/name] to make it sound “more French.” So, a stupid teen who didn’t know how to spell [name]Loren[/name] and didn’t know that [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Loren[/name] is Italian, not French. Now doesn’t that make the name a million times worse?
Babies of actual teen (or VERY young) moms that I know:
[name]Emerie[/name] (named after a band)
[name]Kaiden[/name]
[name]Brooklyn[/name]
[name]Austin[/name]
Baiden and [name]Briley[/name] (twins… the WORST in my opinion)
[name]Tristan[/name]
Brynnley (my niece. And my sister ranted on and on about how she hated our cousin’s use of Baiden and [name]Briley[/name] for her boys… sigh)
All in all… I feel the questionable taste has to do with a mixture of age and the inherent inability to think beyond the present that most teenagers have.
Although, if I had had a child at 16, it would have been [name]Lorelei[/name] or [name]Charlie[/name]… those aren’t terrible, right? And my grandmother had children at 16, 17, and 19 (she was married) and they were [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Jeffery[/name] and [name]James[/name].
This thread makes me kind of sad. What if someone comes on here thinking names like Aubri [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Liam[/name] [name]Allen[/name] are great, and sees you all bash them so harshly? Sure, there are some ([name]Kay[/name]'den, [name]Aydenn[/name], Aliannah/[name]Aleeah[/name]) that are certainly not our style around here - but are they all really that bad? Some of them are actually quite nice. I, personally, prefer the spelling Aubri over [name]Aubrey[/name]. A lot of these names I actually like and wouldn’t guess would come from a “stupid teen”. So I think posters in this thread should be less judgemental just because they’re teenagers. Generalizations like that cause hurt feelings!
Here in the land down under 16 And Pregnant is only on cable, and not many people get cable, so the yooneek names don’t get a “teen mum” label. They’re more likely to be called bogan names. But there’s very much a stereotype attached to them.
If anyone is wondering - a bogan is generally a person found in the poorest suburbs, living on either low income or welfare. They have a particular way of talking and behaving. I believe the American equivalent is “trailer trash”.
I agree. Unfortunately, us teen mothers are frequently tarred with the same brush from society. Anyone - regardless of age- can make a poor name choice. I definitely don’t think being a teenager has anything to do with it. I know plenty of people in their thirties with awfully named children, kre8iv youneek spellings, apostrophes, you name it. I don’t really see what being a teenager has to do with it, but maybe that’s just me.
In my eyes, its pretty much the same as saying “[name]Ah[/name], she’s a teen mom, I bet she’s a crap parent!”. Generalization much? Its not fair. Age doesn’t define the type of parent you will be, the same as age isn’t an excuse for a poorly chosen name. [name]Plenty[/name] of older parents choose crappy names, and they aren’t judged for it.
And for the record, I agree that 90% of the names on that list are rubbish (especially [name]Leah[/name] [name]Leanna[/name] and the twins, who both practically have the same name). It was just the generalization of “What do you expect, they’re teenagers!” that got me thinking.
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Laurent[/name] – [name]Sophia[/name] is way too popular for me but a good name. [name]Laurent[/name] is weird.
[name]Leah[/name] [name]Leann[/name] – [name]Leah[/name] is good. Paired with [name]Leann[/name] is weird.
[name]Carolyn[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] ([name]Carly[/name]) – I love this name! And it’s been mentioned, but her adoptive parents chose the name.
[name]Isaac[/name] [name]Elliot[/name] – I love it. Probably my favorite teen mom name because it’s two of my favorite names!
[name]Brody[/name] [name]Ryan[/name] – It’s ok. I feel like [name]Brody[/name] is gaining popularity… I know two people who named their sons this in the last couple years.
[name]Liam[/name] [name]Allen[/name] – [name]Love[/name] [name]Liam[/name], sounds a little funny with [name]Allen[/name].
[name]Austin[/name] [name]Carter[/name] – Decent name, not terrible.
[name]Callie[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] – [name]Callie[/name] as a given name is weird to me. [name]Danielle[/name] is good.
[name]Joshua[/name] [name]Devon[/name] – I prefer the spelling [name]Devin[/name] but overall a fine name.
[name]Noah[/name] [name]James[/name] – [name]Love[/name] it!
[name]Bentley[/name] [name]Cadence[/name] – I don’t hate it, but don’t really like it. [name]Cadence[/name] is too feminine [name]IMO[/name].
[name]Jace[/name] Vahn – I think I’d like it more if his mom wasn’t such a train wreck. She got arrested twice this week. Poor kid.
[name]Brooklyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name] – Meh. [name]Don[/name]'t like [name]Brooklyn[/name] really.
Aliannah [name]Hope[/name] ([name]Ali[/name]) – Ugh.
[name]Aleeah[/name] [name]Grace[/name] – These poor girls have too similar of names. (Confession: I follow the teen moms on Twitter… I’m crazy) I think I’ve seen [name]Leah[/name] call her [name]Gracie[/name] before which is muuuuch better.
[name]Nevaeh[/name] [name]Lynn[/name] – I hate the name [name]Nevaeh[/name]. It doesn’t even make sense the way it’s pronounced. I feel like it should be nev-ah-ay, not nev-ay-ah. Sigh. [name]Lynn[/name] is ok.
[name]Genesis[/name] [name]Alexa[/name] – [name]Genesis[/name] is a pretty bold name. Hard to live up to [name]IMO[/name]. Sounds weird with [name]Alexa[/name].
[name]Destiny[/name] [name]Brianna[/name] – Hate [name]Destiny[/name] as a first name. [name]Brianna[/name] would have been way better!
Aubri [name]Rose[/name] – [name]Aubrey[/name] wasn’t good enough? [name]Rose[/name] is fine though NMS.
[name]Aubree[/name] [name]Skye[/name] – [name]Just[/name] spell it [name]Aubrey[/name] people! [name]Skye[/name] is weird.
[name]Aydenn[/name] [name]Anthony[/name] – Yuck on the spelled. I loved the name [name]Aidan[/name] until it got ruined like this.
[name]Kay[/name]’den [name]Elijah[/name] – I’m not the biggest fan of the first name but I think it would have been fine if they spelled it differently. I do NOT understand apostrophes in names!!
[name]Jordynn[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Marie[/name] - I don’t like 2 middle names personally. And the spelling… ew.
By the way, I agree that not all teen mothers have terrible taste in names (this list obviously shows that). And not all teen moms are trashy. They get portrayed that way because of things like this show. I don’t think all the girls on this show are terrible, but there are a few that make me roll my eyes ([name]Amber[/name], [name]Jenelle[/name], [name]Leah[/name]). Of course they get the most attention, making the stereotype worse.
noahsark we must have similar taste as I agree with all of the things you said about each name, some are quite good choices, some feel very ‘teen mum’ and then there are the ones with tacky incorrect spelling. However when formychildren1 put up the middle names with the first names it became clear that even the most of nice first names were paired with ridiculous middle names eg [name]Leah[/name] [name]Leanne[/name], [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Laurent[/name] etc.
[name]Just[/name] to clarify, i didn’t start this thread to make cooments on teen mothers. This is a name forum and i am simply opening a discussion regarding names from a TV show, like people do with names from Toddlers and Tiaras to Downton [name]Abbey[/name].
I didn’t take this thread as a bashing of teen moms - but rather a bashing of stupid name choices. And a disproportionate number of those stupid choices are made by teen moms, which make them shockingly predictable. For example, I love watching the show “One [name]Born[/name] [name]Every[/name] Minute” and seeing what names people choose at the end. My husband and I also make bets on the kinds of names the parents choose, just based on watching the couples. Rarely are we wrong. Recently a teen mom mentioned while in labor that she was naming her daughter “[name]Macey[/name].” I said there was a 10 percent chance she would spell it “[name]Macey[/name],” a 10 percent chance it would be “[name]Macie[/name]” and an 80 percent chance that she would choose the stripper route and just throw an “i” at the end and make it “[name]Maci[/name].” I prayed I was wrong - but sigh it was [name]Maci[/name] alright.
The names I like: [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Isaac[/name] and [name]Liam[/name], [name]Noah[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Carly[/name]'s name is o.k. ([name]Carolyn[/name]) though I much prefer [name]Caroline[/name].
[name]Bentley[/name] cracks me up… long before teen mom, I named my poodle mix dog who I adore (he is now 8) [name]Bentley[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name] (yep, with a middle name =0) ). I named him [name]Bentley[/name] after the Luxury car =0) LOL! Hubby agreed to let me get him, and he was a bit pricey, lol!! Anyway, I never imagined that name would take off for baby boys…
I like a lot of the middle name choices; [name]Hope[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Rose[/name]… too bad some of those were not thought of for first position.
I’ll admit I am a fan of teen mom (never watched 16 so don’t know the other names). I like the theme of the twins idle names but I don’t like how matchy their first names are either, and how matchy it is to their mom! Aliannah is nice and works when she doesn’t have a twin name [name]Aleeah[/name]. Oh well, not my kids! My husband saw me watching it today and he thought [name]Ali[/name] was one of the cutest little girls he has seen, I think her glasses look perfect on her.
