So, we were all set on naming our baby girl, due in a month, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. Everyone was happy. Then, my mom, for reasons known only to herself (also that she’s battling advanced cancer and is on a LOT of painkillers), decided to divulge the family connection to the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] AFTER we’d decided on the name: [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] was my grandfather’s first wife- the prostitute he married after he fathered a child with her. None of us even knew he had a first wife or that my mom has a half sister. Sooo, needless to say, we can’t really get over naming our baby after the family prostitute. I am despondent over the news, and have lost interest in naming this kid. But, we apparently need to at some point.
So, any suggestions are appreciated! Our older daughter is named [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]. We stay away from any names ending in -n because of our last name. We prefer names that end in an -ie or -y sound, but it isn’t a requirement. Other names we kind of like are:
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (our main contender, except it shortens to [name_u]Rory[/name_u], which is our dog’s name…)
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
Or, how bad is it to name her Aurora and call her Rory, even though that’s our dog’s name (dog’s real name is Rorschach, but we never call her that)?
I think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is really pretty and you don’t have to use [name_u]Rory[/name_u] as the nickname if that’s the name you like best from the list. It might be a little confusing to have a child and a dog with the same nickname. For example, you might say, “[name_f]Honey[/name_f], can you please feed [name_u]Rory[/name_u]?” and your SO’s thinking “do I need to dump kibbles in a bowl or get a bottle of milk?”
Not to be morbid, but your daughter will far outlive your dog so if [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]'s the name you love, then use it. Maybe use the dog’s full name or “[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]” for the baby/child while your canine friend is around.
Maybe I’m reading your post wrong, but the way you phrased it made me think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] might be your favorite of the possible names. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is cute. Family secrets can be difficult Keeping “[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]” in baby’s name might help to feel you haven’t lost all of the name you loved so much.
Wow I can see how this situation could put you in a predicament. If you love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] I think yo should go for it but I’ll add a few suggestions.
I wish your mom health and a speedy recovery. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is sweet, but so is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. You can’t go wrong with any of them.
Thanks everyone! We’re toying with [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], but it’s so hard because our daughter is nearly 4, and to her [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is her dog, and when [name_u]Rory[/name_u] dies, she will be the dog she used to have. im trying to imagine conversations with this new baby when she’s older-
“you and the dog had the same name!” doesn’t seem a lot better than “great grandpa had a prostitute named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]!”
I know [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] doesn’t have to shorten to [name_u]Rory[/name_u], but I can’t think of any other good NN for it!
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] was nearly our older daughter’s name, since it has a lot of (good) familial precedent in both my and my husband’s families, but…I feel like I know 8,000 kids named [name_f]Evie[/name_f], which is what we’d shorten it to. So I’m maybe a bit bored with it? I dunno. i can’t tell if I’d like it again if I named the baby that, but that’s kinda a big risk. Right now I imagine telling someone her name, and I can’t muster much excitement, but maybe that’s because I’m still so attached to [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].
Anyone else name their baby something they were kinda blah about, and ended up loving it?
I love u and o sounds in girls’ names and I’m seeing some of those with [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], and [name_u]Rory[/name_u], so here’s some suggestions from my list that might have a similar sound.
[name_u]Romy[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhona[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Monet[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/[name_u]Julie[/name_u]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mona[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] (I think [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] would be divine!)
Otherwise, I think you should go with [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]! I know a family who gave their daughter the same name as their cat (though they went by slightly different nicknames). It will work out fine and your daughter will have a name that you love.
What about [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] (aw-REEL-ya? [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is actually derieved from [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. You could call her Relia and still an R nn.
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
So I love this name; however, my husband and I love [name_f]Delia[/name_f] more, and Relia and [name_f]Delia[/name_f] are too close.
The other name connected to [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]. You could call her [name_u]Orie[/name_u].
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] would be cute!
I was blah about my daughters name. We couldn’t decide on anything and after she was born the nurse asked her name and I just said one of the ones we’d been considering. For a long time I was so sad I doesn’t give it more time, and really thought I might have chosen wrong. It took a few months but I really honestly [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] her name now.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Aria[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]? [name_f]Aria[/name_f] has the same feel as [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].
What if you just slightly variated from [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], enough to make it different?
[name_f]Ruma[/name_f]
[name_f]Rumi[/name_f]
[name_m]Rooney[/name_m] (as in [name_m]Rooney[/name_m] [name_f]Mara[/name_f])
Or whatever you come up with… also I think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] are both beautiful choices and I liked the idea of going with a different nickname. I had no idea what what my son’s nicknames would become. He has a couple of them now: B, Basty, Sebby, Bass, and I didn’t pick a single one, I simply call him by his first name, because I love it! ([name_m]Even[/name_m] though it was my number 2 choice.)
It will work out, eventually you become as attached to the name as you do to your baby.
It feels a little like the “call” name is what is really important to you. What name do you really want to call her every day? A longer name may or may not work from that, in which case you could name her what you want to call her. Switch the process. While [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] are gorgeous, they may not be right if you don’t want the nicknames. [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] would be lovely by itself or as a call name for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but there may be other wonderful possibilities as well.
