Baby Naming Blues

My husband and I have been having a very difficult time naming our first child. I am a teacher and I think working with so many children has made me picky about what names I like because I refer back to students when I hear certain names. We are due in [name_u]June[/name_u] and I am feeling a little behind planning wise due to not having a name narrowed down.

I wanted to see if anyone on here could help. Here are a few names/ideas we like to help guide advice.

*Our last name is “[name_u]Dove[/name_u]”

  • We like “[name_f]Jane[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]” for a middle name (but may change that)
  • We like traditional spellings
  • We like vintage, old-fashioned, southern, and classic sounding names
  • I have a hard time with naming her a popular name (on the top 10 list), though I loved Sophia until I saw how popular it has been the last several years (same with the rise of Amelia).
  • My husband likes “j” names (but I’m not stuck on that)

Thanks in advance!

  • [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] & [name_u]James[/name_u]

[name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Flannery[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Tierney[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Whitney[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Shelby[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Darby[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Joy[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Hallie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

I came across a little girl called [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] the other day and it just struck me as so pure and classic. I’m not sure if that’d be too popular for you though.

Other ideas based on your post, I’ve added middles where I have a preference:

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Adara[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_u]Nelly[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]

Thank you, [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is very pretty!

Thank you! My husband is a big fan of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I’m not sold yet, but I do think it’s pretty.

Warmest congratulations, @sarahad!

My recommendation is a three-syllable vintage name with the middle name [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

Three syllables to complement your one-syllable surname.

A vintage name to complement your naming style.

A middle name of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] to make any first name sound southern when spoken together.

Perhaps a name on this Nameberry list would appeal to you?:

My top choice for you is [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

Some other possibilities:

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Muriel[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Priscilla[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

Thank you! I was thinking that the first name should be a bit longer to sound better. Thanks for the advice to look for a 3 syllable name.

Thank you! I love Felecity! My husband is a big fan of [name_f]Winnifred[/name_f]. I love the name [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but I don’t know if that name will grow with her into adulthood.

Suggestions…

[name_f]Justine[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Junia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Jordanna[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], [name_f]Johanna[/name_f], [name_f]Junia[/name_f] and [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] all came to mind with regard to your husband liking J names (though [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] might be to popular for you.)

Other names:
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]/[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]

[name_f]Jeanette[/name_f]
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Francine[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]

I’m sure some of these are repeats but I aimed for your criteria (classic/vintage, southern vibe, conventionally spelled) and kept it to names outside of the top 500.

Looking through other comments I think [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] are both great! (I could even see this as a sibset!)

[name_m]Even[/name_m] if your daughter stopped going by [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as an adult she’d probably still let you call her that. Most people I know who “grew out” of their nicknames are still called those nicknames by one or both of their parents.

Sorry if I repeat

[name_f]Winona[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_f]Flora[/name_f]/[name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_f]Jillian[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_f]Willa[/name_f]/[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] ([name_f]Winnie[/name_f]) [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is beauitful too!

My husband and I are having a hard time naming our baby girl due in [name_u]June[/name_u]. I have posted on here before looking for recommendations and was happy to receive so many supportive suggestions.

I was wanting to post with two intentions in mind:

  1. [name_m]How[/name_m] do/did you know that name was the “one” for your baby?

  2. Did anyone wait to see their baby before naming him/her? (I feel like if I were to see her I’d have more of an idea of what to name her, but I don’t want to wait too long and feel the pressure to name right then and there)
