Baby number 2 - getting closer

After a bit of time off nameberry, I’m back for some thoughts on our short list. We have had so much trouble naming our second little girl. I’d say I have under 10 weeks to go, probably closer to 8wks and nothing is sticking. My husband and I have both done a list and compared and have some names that we both like which is a start I guess. (for those who might remember, my list has changed a bit since I’ve seen my husband’s list) Last time seemed much easier as we both loved the name [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] which was also my great grandmother’s name. This time around we would like to use a name from my husbands side of the family but I honestly don’t like any of the obvious names.

I have just found out that my husband’s great grandmother’s middle name was [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is on both of our lists and although not at the top, definitely a name we can both agree on and wouldn’t be disappointed with. My main concern is that [name_f]Florence[/name_f] has ran its course? (we’re in Australia?) Is it still seen as a lovely classic name or a bit boring now with how popular it has been in previous years? I like the idea of [name_u]Ren[/name_u] as a possible nickname as [name_u]Wren[/name_u] is on my list as a stand alone name (husband doesn’t like it though) Middle name options likely to be [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] or [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f].

Other names high on our lists are [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] and my daughters favourite [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. We would possibly consider encouraging our daughter to call the baby [name_f]Polly[/name_f] regardless of whatever we choose as I think it is a sweet pet name. Names that we both like but I’m not sure if they’re too boring compared with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] are [name_u]Rylie[/name_u], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].

Sorry for the long post! Would love to hear your thoughts

I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] make a lovely sibset! And wren is a great nickname

But i do love [name_f]Polly[/name_f] as a stand alone! Super cute pet name for big sister

[name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] or [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]

I actually adore [name_f]Polly[/name_f] on its own. Such a lively, spunky choice. My second favourite is [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] sounds lovely.

I love [name_f]Polly[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] would be lovely. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is also amazing - not boring at all

I also really love [name_f]Polly[/name_f] as a sister name to [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]! [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] or [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] would be really lovely. I also quite like [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and I think it is too well-established of a name to ever sound dated. It works very nicely with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. If you feel you want something a bit more different, I like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] the best of your remaining choices. [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] would make an adorable sister set. Good luck!

I think that almost all of the names on your list make perfect sisters with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is elegant and intriguing, and fits the vintage theme with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] make a super sweet, upbeat sibset. I might find [name_u]Rylie[/name_u] a bit boring with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], but [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] all shine in their own right. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] from the previous posters are great. If you’re looking for something a little shorter than [name_f]Florence[/name_f], there’s always [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

[name_f]Florence[/name_f] is nice, but not sure of the feel in Australia. To me it feels more clunky-vintage than [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. My picks would be [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], or [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f].

[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] are amazing together! Seconding [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. [name_u]Wren[/name_u] is a lovely nickname, and for some reason [name_f]Polly[/name_f] seems to also work for [name_f]Florence[/name_f].
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] sounds good, but I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] is verging on being too long, though it depends on your surname.

Being in the US I can’t really speak to whether [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is tired in the Australian naming climate, but I do live [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] as a sibset! They seem so well suited. I also love [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], maybe with nickname [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]? I don’t think it’s too boring and again, is lovely with sister [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is super sweet too and only give me pause because of the matching end sound as given names, but that’s nitpicky on my part and can also easily be remedied with a longer form like [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]. I also love the idea of big sister just using this as a pet name, and could see [name_f]Florence[/name_f] aka [name_f]Polly[/name_f] actually working well.

So my favorites with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] from your current list are [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].

Thanks everyone for your amazing feedback. Good to hear others liking our favourite name choices as well. I think I’m starting to feel a little less stressed about naming our little girl.
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is the only name that has stayed at the top of my list this pregnancy and I do like the suggestions of [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f], thanks

I think I like the nicknamey names with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], as [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] itself sounds a bit nicknamey:
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] & [name_u]Julie[/name_u] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] (instead of [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]) or [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] (instead of [name_f]Harriet[/name_f])

I do [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Florence[/name_f], though, and it’s the only one I like with both [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] as a middle name.
Good luck to you both, hope you have a smooth & safe birth!

The only name I like from your list is [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]. I think it sounds sweet with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is an okay name, but [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] sound adorable together.
I can’t stand the trendy [name_u]Rylie[/name_u] (ugh!), [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] are too old-fashioned, ergo 1930’s, for my taste.

I love [name_f]Florence[/name_f] as [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]'s sister. I’m in Australia and I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is very cool. It’s not over-used and still on the rise so not dated at all. It’s only just appeared in the top 100 names - in 2017 I think. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is also lovely but I like the idea of [name_f]Florence[/name_f] with [name_f]Polly[/name_f] nn ([name_f]Polly[/name_f] could be a nn for anything!) [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] is lovely! And [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] also works well.
