Baby Sister Name Options

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone…first time poster here (long time lurker).

I’m 25 weeks along with a baby girl and am having a terrible time narrowing down the name options and thought I could ask for some help.

Background: last name is a four syllable Italian name (like Soppressata). Big brother is [name_u]Luca[/name_u].

Here are some of the options we are looking at:

[name_f]Serafina[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Sera[/name_f])
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] (too popular?)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] (too popular?)

Middle name will be chosen after we finalize a first name.

Wondering on your thoughts regarding the list, and any other suggestions you think sound nice that I haven’t thought of.

Thanks in advance - appreciate your help!!

PS - we are not a full Italian family - I’m NOT Italian and DH is half Italian - so while I do like Italian names (ahem…[name_u]Luca[/name_u]) it is not a must have. Thx.

I like the idea of [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] “Soppressata”
Some other ideas are:
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Daria[/name_f]
[name_f]Marzia[/name_f] (pronounced Martz-ee-ah)
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
[name_f]Althea[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] ([name_f]Violet[/name_f] “Soppressata” might sound cool, it sounds like a cool rebel name to me)
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]

Those were just some ideas that you might like. I don’t think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is too popular though I think it depends on where you live. Some regions have more ‘uncommon’ names than others, so that’s something to keep in mind. I have never known an [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or an [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and I live in [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_f]England[/name_f].

I like all of the names on your list except for [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] - to me it sounds rather masculine and unappealing, and definitely not in the same line as [name_u]Luca[/name_u] style-wise.

I feel like [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] might be a little too long with a four-syllable surname, although it is a very lovely name.

[name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are all two-syllable names ending in -a, just like [name_u]Luca[/name_u], and that might be something to keep an eye on if you’d like to have more children in the future because it will kind of set a “pattern”.

I don’t feel like [name_f]Isla[/name_f] or [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] are too popular, although it obviously depends on where you are located. They’re very popular on Nameberry but that doesn’t mean you’ll be hearing them on every child around in your neighborhood.

Some more (Italian) options you might like:

[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Silvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cinzia[/name_f]
[name_f]Giulia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]

Some other ideas:

[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Amara[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]

Thanks for the reply.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that [name_u]Luca[/name_u] and [name_f]Willa[/name_f]/[name_f]Mira[/name_f]/[name_f]Isla[/name_f] is too matchy matchy?

No, I don’t think they are too matchy, because they start with different consonants and have a different vowel in their first syllable. [name_u]Luca[/name_u] and [name_f]Willa[/name_f] would be the least matchy I think because they also have a different amount of letters.

[name_u]Luca[/name_u] and [name_f]Mira[/name_f] sound great together! I would vote [name_f]Mira[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Mira[/name_f] for you! I think it goes best stylistically with [name_u]Luca[/name_u] and your long Italian last name. I like [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Sera[/name_f], but I feel like another 4 syllable S name is too much with your last name.

Thank you

Thanks Milligan - one of my original favourites was [name_f]Mila[/name_f] but that name has been earmarked by a very good friend of mine and I’m not sure it is worth the discussion. I thought [name_f]Mira[/name_f] might be a good alternative.

I agree with [name_f]Mira[/name_f] being a good match. Or even [name_f]Mina[/name_f]?

The popularity thing is so very regional. I know TONS of Islas, but then it’s Top 10 in my province. It’s beautiful.

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f]!

Soppressata is an awesome (if semi-challenging) name to work with. [name_u]Luca[/name_u] sounds great with it.

I don’t know how popular is too popular for you - looking at the SSA’s 2013 list, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] was #338 and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] was #167. [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] is #406, [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Mira[/name_f] are in the 600s and [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] isn’t in the top 1000. Different names can get really popular in different areas, which the national list doesn’t show, so if you feel like you’re hearing a name a lot in your area, go by that instead of the national list. For comparison’s sake, [name_u]Luca[/name_u] was #202 for 2013, so currently it’s a bit less popular than [name_f]Isla[/name_f] but more popular than the others on your list.

I respectfully disagree that another name that ends in A would set you up for an unbreakable pattern if you have more children later on. Names ending in “a” are pretty common, especially among girls, and personally I don’t think it would faze me at all to meet siblings named [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. I definitely wouldn’t think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] got the short end of the stick and must feel very left out. If they all ended in X, I’d probably notice, but not A.

I don’t think any of [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Mira[/name_f] or [name_f]Isla[/name_f] sounds too matchy with [name_u]Luca[/name_u].

I do agree that [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] doesn’t feel anything like the rest of your list or like [name_u]Luca[/name_u].

[name_f]Serafina[/name_f] feels like [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]'s polar opposite. [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] Soppressata is a whole lot of name… if you want to go for something super frilly, look no further. I’m torn - on one hand I feel like it’s kind of over the top, and on the other hand I love it because it’s kind of over the top!

[name_m]Minor[/name_m] issue with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]: if your surname starts with “S”, I don’t love how the end of [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] sort of runs into the beginning of it. Not a big deal and probably nothing that most people would notice, but I thought I’d point it out.

Depending on what your last name really is (I take it from the “like” that it isn’t actually Soppressata but is similar to it?), I may or may not want to suggest [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] Soppressata proably has too much “s” sound and comes around to sounding hissy, and the repeated short “e” sounds bother me a bit, but if those don’t apply to your real surname, maybe consider [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. I love it with [name_u]Luca[/name_u] and in theory with your surname.

Others you might like:

[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Maia[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Corrina[/name_f] or [name_f]Karina[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f] or [name_f]Giulia[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
ETA Gemma

I love [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] with [name_u]Luca[/name_u]! It is a lot of name but I think it flows so well. My second vote would be [name_f]Mira[/name_f].

Thank you for the reply and the suggestions. My last name is actually nothing like Soppressata sound wise, just in syllables, background and style. My real last name starts with a C and doesn’t have any repetitive letters next to each other.

I agree that [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] is fussy. Our original list was [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] (polar opposites as you mention). I think [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] is a beautiful name but a mouthful of frill, though would be a nice, beautiful Italian name. My husband has always loved [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] - thinks it is cool and kind of badass. And I have a feeling my daughter will be more of a [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] than a [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] (though the meaning of [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] is “fiery ones” which is pretty badass too

I actually love [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] - my husband kind of turned it down when i first floated it…but now I’m motivated to put it back on the list
