our little girl is due soon, and we are pretty set on Umaya (I added an -a at the end of [name_f]Umay[/name_f], turkish goddess of fertility, mother nature, children, the moon). [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is turkish and im french/german/american - we live between US and europe.
I love that Umaya is super rare and special, yet somehow sounds familiar ? curious what you think
However i would love to hear your thoughts on [name_f]Uma[/name_f] - as that is what I will probably mostly be calling her on a regular basis. It was a name that never crossed my mind in all my years of obsessing over names, and now that I am actually pregnant it just kept coming to me out of the blue as such an earthy, substantial, yet light and airy name. Somehow chic and sensual, yet grounded.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Uma/Umaya (also do you prefer Umaya or Umaia spelling) and i am still looking for middle names - maybe something more classical?
Omigosh, I really like Uma - it’s so beautiful and “essential”.
I hadn’t heard of Umaya but it’s lovely & seems of Sanskrit & Japanese origins too. I would use Umaya as the spelling as I think it keeps that grounded but also spiritual feel you’re talking about, and seems more authentic to the name.
Would you be going for the May or My sound for the second syllable? I think the “ai” spelling makes it more likely people will flit between both.
I’m much more an [name_f]Oona[/name_f] person than an [name_f]Uma[/name_f] person, but I think [name_f]Uma[/name_f] is a lovely name and I’ve been intrigued by Umaya since you first mentioned it! I think both are lovely names.
I like the suggestion of Umaya Josephine… I also like these:
I’m a 2000s/2010s kid so I automatically think of [name_f]Uma[/name_f] [name_m]Thurman[/name_m] by [name_f]Fall[/name_f] Out [name_m]Boy[/name_m] so I would probably call her [name_f]Umi[/name_f] or [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or even MiMi if it were me. But that’s probably a little niche, especially in Europe.
I love the Umaia spelling because it looks better to me but you might find a bit of difficulty in the US.
Umaya is such a sweet name! I love love love the name [name_f]Uma[/name_f], but I’m biased because I have a family member with the name . I prefer Umaya in spelling, but how is it pronounced? Oo-may-a or Oo-my-a?
