We were set on [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], but now we’re not sure…it’s still a contender but it’s no longer THE name.
We love the history of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], it’s seriousness, it’s strength; it’s just a cool name.
However, we do not like [name_m]Artie[/name_m] and planned to call him [name_m]Archie[/name_m]; we don’t mind that this isn’t the natural nickname for [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], but we worry he’ll become [name_m]Art[/name_m]/[name_m]Artie[/name_m].
Also, we’re not wild about the -ur ending combined with the -ER ending of our surname.
And so, here we are…again…
We both like [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] (it’s my new top contender); it’s classic, no weird nicknames, no bad associations, it’s a good, solid name. It does lack, however, the historical greatness of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].
So my question, can you think of a name as friendly and classic as [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] with more historical gravity?
A name I would put in this category is [name_m]Henry[/name_m], which is our DS’s name.
Oh no! I’m sorry you’re not liking [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] as much as you did before, I still think it’s lovely but understand your concerns at the same time. Suggestions:
[name_m]Albert[/name_m] - I’ve suggested it before but I will again because you can have a fun nickname similar to your beloved [name_m]Archie[/name_m] - [name_m]Albie[/name_m]!
[name_m]Marshall[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_u]Neil[/name_u]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
And thank you for your suggestions! I love [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], especially with [name_u]Andy[/name_u]; that strikes that friendly/historical chord we’re trying to strike. On the list it goes!
I still really like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] with [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but understand your concerns with [name_m]Art[/name_m]/[name_m]Artie[/name_m]! [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is really hard to equal, especially in terms of finding names with a similar feel that don’t have nicknames or at least don’t have unappealing nicknames. For instance, I like [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] but not [name_u]Phil[/name_u] and many others seem to fall into this category. I think I remember you have a [name_f]Jane[/name_f] too? So that would probably rule out [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_u]James[/name_u]. Some classic names I like with [name_m]Henry[/name_m]:
Thank you for all of the ideas, [name_f]Maura[/name_f]
You’re right, we do have a [name_f]Jane[/name_f], so no [name_u]James[/name_u], but that is a great name.
I also love [name_m]William[/name_m] but know so many little [name_m]William[/name_m]'s I can’t get on board.
[name_m]George[/name_m] is another name we love, I need to bring that one back up to my DH and see if it’s still a possibility. He’s vetoed it before because of a bad association, but it’s such a “[name_m]Henry[/name_m]” kind of name, it’s worth revisiting.
More good ideas! Some of those ([name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m]) have been discussed but let go for one reason or another. One I keep seeing pop up is [name_m]Zachary[/name_m], one we haven’t discussed but I love it. Thank you!
Some ideas:
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] or [name_m]Radcliffe[/name_m], nn [name_m]Raddie[/name_m]
[name_u]Douglas[/name_u]
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]; [name_m]Jonny[/name_m] is as friendly as it gets, and [name_m]John[/name_m] is so handsome and unexpected these days.
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
we love [name_m]John[/name_m]/[name_m]Johnny[/name_m]; I agree it’s unexpected these days! Unfortunately, we have a [name_f]Jane[/name_f]; even though [name_m]John[/name_m] would honor my DH and FIL, I can’t do [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]John[/name_m] under one roof.
[name_u]Douglas[/name_u] is so old Hollywood cool, but I fear the inevitable [name_m]Doug[/name_m].
My favorites of the suggested so far are [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] (I’m a huge fan of [name_u]Andy[/name_u] myself!) and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] ([name_m]Ben[/name_m] or the even better [name_m]Benji[/name_m]). I also love [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] (but it has the -er ending as your last name…), [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] (does it matter that his initials will be BS? I can’t decide…)
We’re still searching for that illusive name that fits in, stands out, is friendly, historical, doesn’t end in an -s or -er, doesn’t start with an S or Ch, and has no negative associations for either DH or me. Should be a piece of cake!
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Colin[/name_m]?!
It’s perfect with [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f], I can’t see it being automatically nicknamed, but there’s always [name_m]Cole[/name_m] if you want something, it’s under-the-radar, classic, literary through ‘The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden’, approachable, gentle like [name_m]Henry[/name_m]… You should really pick [name_m]Colin[/name_m]! ^^
Saw [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] mentioned as well, he has much the same feel to me, and with adorable [name_m]Ned[/name_m] as a nickname option!
And [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]! [name_m]Graham[/name_m] (or [name_m]Graeme[/name_m]
Others:
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] (love this, it’s just as good as [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]!)
[name_m]Eli[/name_m]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m] (I know no S’s, but you considered [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]?)
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Pip[/name_m] or [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] or [name_u]Flip[/name_u]!)
[name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m] / [name_m]Iver[/name_m] / [name_m]Ivan[/name_m]
[name_m]Ansel[/name_m]
[name_m]Locke[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucan[/name_m] / [name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_u]Claude[/name_u]
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] is so handsome, Dearest, one we’ve discussed, but one of my very good friends has a [name_m]Collin[/name_m]; she probably wouldn’t mind us using it, but I would feel a little funny.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]August[/name_u], specifically because of [name_u]Gus[/name_u], but how is [name_u]Gus[/name_u] [name_f]Summers[/name_f]?
I keep trying to get a straight answer out of DH about [name_m]Luke[/name_m], which I adore. Amazingly, as many times as I’ve mentioned it, I still don’t know his opinion.
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] seems so blah with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. I prefer many of the suggestions you have gotten like [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m]. The suggestion I would add is [name_m]Walter[/name_m].
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] doesn’t seem to fit with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. [name_m]George[/name_m] seems like the best fit for you, unless you like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] or [name_m]Charles[/name_m] better?
[name_m]George[/name_m], sadly, my husband has vetoed (several times despite my pleading), [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] have both been discussed (love [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]) but run with our last name of [name_f]Summers[/name_f].
Such a pity you have gone off [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], I find it a perfect match with [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]! Could [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] work at all? Similar to [name_m]George[/name_m] and lovely with [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. [name_m]Julian[/name_m] was my other thought. All the VERY best deciding!
