Back to Square One

[name_m]Just[/name_m] when it seemed we’d actually be finalizing on a choice of two names, my husband comes up with a whole new list of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] associated names. I hate myself for leaving such an important thing so late, but there are so many names and only one little baby. At the minute, I’m honestly willing for any suggestions, as long as the names are to do with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], as this is important to me. We had previously narrowed it down to [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] and [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f], however this seems to have changed, and I’m genuinely ready for pulling my hair out - strand by strand.

Suggestions with either one or two middle names would be immensely helpful and our surname starts with a S, contrary to my username - there’s a list of HP names here if this helps. Names From Harry Potter | Nameberry

At the minute, our names list consists of;
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - nn Mione or [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - nn [name_m]Rowe[/name_m]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] - nn Cissa/[name_f]Cissy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]

My husband seems to like [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] nn [name_f]Belle[/name_f] - don’t get me wrong, I love her character, but hmm?
Any other suggestions/combinations would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you:)

Coming from a person who just started to read [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], I think [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is a beautiful name. But I haven’t read about her yet, so my viewpoint on her might sway. I wouldn’t have known about the HP reference if I didn’t have friends that were into the series.

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Narcissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] (I want to use [name_f]Luna[/name_f] more, but she’s hard to pair with these names)
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Narcissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] This Helped

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - nn Mione or [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] - Great character, intersting nickname thought - I think this name will never fit in all that well and will kind of always be linked to the character : /. Personally, I would let it go or put it in the middle.

[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] - Beautiful name that fits in pretty well and has some nickname possibilities besides [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] too ([name_f]Ginny[/name_f]'s fine). A top pick.

[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - nn [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] - Similar feelings to [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]. I like it a little less, but it’s a good name and the nn [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] is wonderful. A great pick.

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - an appealing name that is skyrocketing in popularity, she will certainly fit in.

[name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] - nn Cissa/[name_f]Cissy[/name_f] - Please let this one go or keep it to the middle. While the connection to daffodils is lovely, the connection to narcissism isn’t. Also, I see the cuteness in [name_f]Cissy[/name_f], but I can see it being the sort of nickname that’s hard to pull off.

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - currently a top name, she certainly will fit in fine. I love this name. Your taste seems to run rarer than this so I question how happy you’d really be. If I’m right, keep it for the middle.

[name_f]Fleur[/name_f] - pretty and interesting but I think it’s too hard up front. People are going to not know how to pronounce it, are going to make jokes about the floor, etc.

[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] - I like this better than [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] as a way to [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], and it is more appealing to me than it used to be. But, I think that “nerve” syllable is pretty rich with teasing possibility. I’d keep it for the middle. Also, it’s so similar in look and nickname to [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], and [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]'s a much lovelier name.

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] - a strong name. Not classically attractive but I get it. Sybby and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] are interesting potential nicknames. Most of your other names are more classically feminine or even a little frilly so that makes me wonder if you’d be happier with this as a middle. [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] with an S last name might also be kind of hissy (but it might work).

Fun post! Let me look at some of the others and comment further. My top suggestions for flow and good names might be:

[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]

My favourite HP combinations for girls are [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] or [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]. All wonderful characters, and beautiful names!

Oh yes and [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - I see the appeal but I would really keep it to the middle. Flow wise I think it only really works in [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - but I like all the other [name_f]Luna[/name_f] combos above better.

OK, bearing in mind I know little about the characters…

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - great name. But with your last name beginning with S avoid an S middle.
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - also a great name.
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - very pretty and interesting middle name territory to me.
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] - nice name that is a better way to [name_f]Bella[/name_f] than [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]!
[name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f] - no. Rough Biblical story, too much name.
[name_f]Charity[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Charity[/name_f]. I know a lot of people find it kind of downwardly mobile :/.
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] - wonderful name.
[name_f]Helga[/name_f] - soft spot for me because it’s a family name. But, no.
[name_f]Hepzibah[/name_f] - a better Biblical tie in than [name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f], my friend’s middle. It’s too much name, but I like [name_f]Zibby[/name_f] as a nn and think it’s kind of charming as a middle.
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f] - pretty, mostly middle name territory but could border on first name.
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] - kind of old ladyish but almost vintage? I could like it. [name_f]Marjo[/name_f] is cute.
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] - [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is certainly adorable. Old ladyish but coming close to vintage?
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] - cute and appealing but like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] too mainstream for your taste?
[name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] - probably way too old lady but maybe in the middle?
[name_f]Olympe[/name_f] - intriguing but too limp I think.
[name_f]Pansy[/name_f] - so cute but teasing potential?
[name_f]Petunia[/name_f] - intriguing but too much tuna.
[name_f]Pomona[/name_f] - I really like this name! I guess some would find the moan syllable rough?
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - I have never cared for this one but I think it’s a viable name that fits in, plenty of people like it. A middle name option perhaps too.
[name_f]Rita[/name_f] - kind of too quick and nicknamey for me.
[name_f]Rolanda[/name_f] - too heavy for me.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] running through some…

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Charity[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Pomona[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Millicent[/name_f]

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] would really clash with our last name, and really I’m not that keen. I do like [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], however I really want that HP tie for our first, because it’s something special to both of us. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is really growing on me, and I do like the suggestion of [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], as [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] seems to be my husband’s favourite. At the minute, I think [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] is my favourite, and I love the nn [name_m]Rowe[/name_m], but I’m not completely convinced. I’d love for [name_f]Lily[/name_f] to be in there somewhere, probably as a middle name because I’m put off by its popularity. I’m leaning towards two middle names, so suggestions?
Again, thankyou.

If we did have two middle names, I wouldn’t be so adamant on it has to be HP. For example, I wouldn’t mind, say [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] -insert unrelated middle name here-. I’m really not keen on [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], however I do like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f].

If you love [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] then I recommend [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f].

My favorites (using [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] in a middle spot) are:

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]
Ginerva [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] Bellatix [name_f]Lily[/name_f]

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Molly[/name_f]

The only problem is, I like [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], but nobody else seems to. My husband likes the nn [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] for it, but he’s not crazy about [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] itself. My mother in law loathes it, but my sister loves it. Everyone is quite divided on it.

I’m also a huge [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - I’m afraid I really wouldn’t use this one. [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is just a sociopath. Perhaps in the middle it could work?
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - I’ve always loved this. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] is gorgeous. I also like [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] (Dumbledore’s little sister’s name), [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f].
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] - I like this, but for some reason I’ve never been a fan of the nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] is stunning, however. I love [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f].
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - Never been a big fan of [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], but love the character reference. I like [name_m]Rowe[/name_m], too. I would personally go for [name_f]Helena[/name_f] ([name_f]Rowena[/name_f] Ravenclaw’s daughter’s name) over [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] any day.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - love the name, adore the character. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] - I’m not a big fan of this name, I’m afraid - it sounds too much like ‘narcissistic’ for me, and the nn [name_f]Cissy[/name_f] sounds like ‘sissy’.
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - love, but it’s so popular! I’d pair with an unusual middle: [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f].
[name_f]Fleur[/name_f] - gorgeous and sophisticated. [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] [name_f]Charity[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] [name_f]Molly[/name_f].
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - I love the character reference and the nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], but the ‘nerv’ part of the name I dislike.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] - never been a big fan of either the character or the name.
I would suggest adding [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] to your list ([name_m]Albus[/name_m]'s sister’s name), as well as perhaps [name_f]Angelina[/name_f] ([name_m]Johnson[/name_m], Gryffindor Chaser), [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] (Longbottom, [name_m]Neville[/name_m]'s grandmother and guardian), Nymphadora (Tonks), [name_f]Romilda[/name_f] ([name_m]Vane[/name_m] - although a minor character, I love this name), Rosmerta (Madame Rosmerta of The Three Broomsticks). Best of luck!

I really like [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], however it’s another name that my husband isn’t too keen on, which actually upsets me. I may be able to convince him to have it as a middle. I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] as a middle name, so any suggestions? [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is one we both like but he doesn’t like too much, same with [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], which he loves, and I like, but he hates the nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], whereas I love it. Really, we need somewhere in the middle.

I was all for the girly names if I’m honest, but on another thread I’ve just suggested [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and I’m starting to love it. Not the nicest meaning really but still.

Completely forgot to add [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] to the list! This is another of my husbands favourites, but I’m undecided.

I saw someone else suggest [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] and I think everything about that name is just perfection. If I could get my husband to come around to [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] we would use the nickname [name_f]Vera[/name_f]

I love all three of the combos you had picked out before. With all the Annabelles, Isabelles, etc. out there the nickname “[name_f]Belle[/name_f]” is a lot less distinctive. [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], and [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] are all fantastic.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f]? Quirky and a tad clunky, but a very beautiful name. There is also the variation [name_f]Edwige[/name_f], which is slightly less clunky, and won’t be so associated with the owl so strongly. [name_f]Heddy[/name_f]/[name_f]Edda[/name_f] as possible nick names? I am considering this for my soon-to-be daughter, but I realise my taste runs crusty.

[name_m]How[/name_m] are you pronouncing [name_f]Rowena[/name_f]? I find a lot of people love it more when you pronounce that ‘e’ softly (same as the e in the word ‘end’). roh-ENN-uh. Something to consider, if that might make Himself more keen.

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is a great Latin name with a kickass meaning, and it’s quite unfortunate that it is soooo strongly associated with the character.

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] is pretty but predictable, perhaps?

[name_f]Molly[/name_f]?

Aside from being from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], what effect would you like the name to have?

[name_m]Will[/name_m] all your children have [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] names?

I like [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] for you. Also, consider nn [name_u]Rue[/name_u]/Roo instead of [name_m]Rowe[/name_m], though [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] is very cute.

I never thought of [name_u]Rue[/name_u], and I really like it - although I love [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] too. I’m pronouncing [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] as ro-ay-na, although I’m not sure if this is entirely correct, but I do like your pronunciation, and this sounds like something the OH would like. Is your pronunciation a bit like [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]?

As for the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] names, this is a possibility if the next is a girl, because most of the names we adore have some association with a HP character. Obviously, if this were the case it wouldn’t be something obvious like [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], but more like [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] or something like that - that most wouldn’t associate with HP without knowing us well. As for the boys, the only HP name is [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] (and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], but I don’t think people would think HP), however it isn’t very widely known that this is a JK Rowling character, but [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] is also a Shakespearean name.

With [name_f]Molly[/name_f], I love her character, but hate the popularity of the name. [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] - I can see the appeal, but the wig in it puts me off, and that’s a very obvious HP association.
