So we had decided on [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] for a girl name and my husband’s best friend/cousin just announced that they’re naming their little girl [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. We hadn’t announced it yet or anything so I’m not angry, but we can’t use it now.
We have quite a few other names we like, but none feel quite right. [name_f]Do[/name_f] we need to just settle on an “ok” name? I’m not sure we’ll feel 100% about any name at this point!
We want it out of the top 50-ish and not to start with a J, but those aren’t the biggest deal breakers.
The top names we like with the reasons we aren’t sure about them:
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Melody[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]Beth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Joanne[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-all of our family hates [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], it just isn’t sparking as much joy as I want, this is hubby’s top pick
[name_f]Melody[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-same as above
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]- love that this is a family name, it’s really long, I don’t like the nickname [name_f]Susie[/name_f]
[name_f]Beth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] (or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f])- our last name with this name is a well known famous person, it also seems a little plain with our other daughter’s name ([name_f]Lydia[/name_f])
[name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Joanne[/name_f]- my sister’s little girl is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] so this seems a little too close
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]- this is really close to my name and our son’s name is like my husband’s, so this would leave out our middle daughter
Some other names that one of us likes or is a little more popular than we really want, none are 100% ruled out yet-
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
[name_u]Sydney[/name_u]
[name_u]Addison[/name_u]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
Open to new suggestions or combinations or names we semi-like. We would really like to use [name_f]Anne[/name_f] in some form.
Thanks!!!
I like [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] for you. It’s a spunky combo and not too popular. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Sukie[/name_f] or [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] as a nickname? If not I think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] works fine without a nickname. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it looks long it’s only three syllables. I know several Joannas who do not use a nickname.
I definitely don’t mind using [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] without a nickname, we don’t use nicknames for our other kiddos. I guess I’m more worried about someone else giving her the nickname. Thanks for the suggestions!
Hello! I really, really love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] for you. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is such a wonderful, underused classic, and [name_u]Rae[/name_u] is bright and beautiful. A word on nicknames: I think people tend to follow the parents’ lead on what to call the child nowadays, so I don’t think you’ll have to worry about it!
Thanks for the input! That’s true. I don’t ever give someone a nickname they didn’t say first. And our family was really good about respecting our requests for no nicknames with our son. I guess everyone else doesn’t matter as much!
I like [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]!
I love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] for you. I don’t think [name_f]Suzie[/name_f] would be automatic, plus if you or she wants a nickname, there’s [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Sanna[/name_f], [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] too.
There have been lots of great suggestions for you. Of your options, my favorites are [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] as well. Other ideas:
I see your dilemma. To answer one of your questions: no, don’t settle for an “ok” name because someone is using the name you actually like. If it really came down to it (which I don’t think it will because you have other options) I would use [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] anyways and just say wow, we really do have similar tastes as we picked out [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] too!
I think from your list I love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. I think it seems to your favorite too aside from the [name_f]Susie[/name_f] issue. I can understand not wanting to be forced to give your child a more creative nickname to avoid the nickname you dislike. I’m in that same boat with my current favorite boy name (olaf- but I can’t stand [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]). I will say that I agree with the user that said they typically call a person by how they are introduced. I think the exception is with [name_m]Uber[/name_m] popular nn like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. [name_f]Susie[/name_f] isn’t super popular so I don’t think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is automatically [name_f]Susie[/name_f]
With [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], I really like [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] from your list. If you really still want [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]-- maybe you could move it to the mn spot?
Some names that I think are similar to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and work well with [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] are:
It definitely seems like the one with least criticism is [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is pretty, and if you don’t like [name_f]Susie[/name_f] but want a nickname, you could use [name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Beth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] was an interesting one, since [name_f]Bethan[/name_f] is a very common name here in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. This might be a bit more interesting to you than just [name_f]Beth[/name_f], and [name_f]Bethan[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] sound good together. Then you could use an extra name!
Thanks for the great suggestions!
I think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] is definitely a front runner!
The other name that we both agree on is [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. All of the others seem to be really liked by one and only semi-liked by the other.
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] we have some time to figure it out and they didn’t wait until we were even more attached to the name!
I love both [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]; classic and lovely and unexpected!
My favorite [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] nickname is [name_m]Zan[/name_m], or [name_f]Zanna[/name_f], for what it’s worth.
I love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] best from your list, and either would be great as [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]'s sister. As pps have said you just need a different nn for [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Suki[/name_f], Zannah, [name_m]Zan[/name_m], [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. I’ve also seen Susu and [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] for [name_f]Susannah[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] works really well for you! You could always consider [name_f]Sanna[/name_f] or [name_f]Sukie[/name_f] as [name_f]Susie[/name_f] alternatives.
