Did the person who said your kids don’t have formal names know that they always go by nicknames? To someone who doesn’t know “[name_m]Rome[/name_m]” is a nickname for something else, I can totally see how they’d say [name_m]Rome[/name_m] isn’t a formal name.
If they know your kids are [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_m]Emilio[/name_m], then I really have no idea where they’re getting that from.
Maybe they meant they aren’t all classic names… “formal” to them might mean [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_m]Richard[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], and [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m]… who knows?
“Formal” is different to everyone. I wouldn’t lose sleep over it
I really am quite astonished that anyone would say such a thing to you in regards to your children’s names. Obviously they’re not very informed about names. Perhaps your names aren’t familiar to them. Or they’re not quite open-minded or ignorant of the world around them. [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m] (or [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m]) is the Russian form of [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] is a Shakespearean name, [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] is an ancient name of distinction, [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is a royal name and [name_m]Emilio[/name_m] is the Spanish/Italian version of the Latin name Aemilius. If those facts don’t make a name “formal”, I give up!
I wish more parents would take the time and research their choices like you’ve done. I wouldn’t worry about it at all. [name_m]Just[/name_m] curious…does the person who told you this have any children and if so, I wonder what they’re called?
The person was talking about the full names, after I had mentioned them.
Having [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] as my name, and my husband with [name_m]Henrik[/name_m], was what had us stirring from the traditional formal names like [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m].
Thank you so much for the compliment! The lady who said that has three lovely, charming children - [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. Very formal names, very posh, at least to me but, in my own opinion, not very ‘fun’ names.
Your kids’ names are gorgeous & serious. I’d hire them!
I think the names you picked for your children are beautiful names and there’s nothing wrong with them. I like the names the lady has for her children as well, but it’s incredibly rude of her to think her name choices are better than yours.
I wouldn’t worry about it. When I read “not very formal”, I was thinking your kids’ full names were Bitsy, [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], and [name_m]Jimbo[/name_m] or something. The names you chose are perfectly fine, just a different style from this other lady.
Actually, my first thought was that [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] doesn’t feel formal to me, but that’s probably because I associate it with a puppet from one of my favourite TV shows as a child.
I know an adult [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], she despises her name - she’s always asked if it’s a nn for [name_f]Luanne[/name_f] or something similar. Darling name but it doesn’t age well.
I think your kids names are formal, I don’t really see how they can be considered otherwise. And a I have to add, all your children have amazing names, as in really amazing! I particularly love [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]; you and your husband have a very good taste in names!
Thank you very much!! I have to say, I have always had a passion for [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], too! It was very close to being [name_m]Milo[/name_m]'s middle name! (so was [name_u]River[/name_u])
I think it depends where you’re coming from. I come from a part of the US (Mid-Atlantic) with a large Italian-American population and there are many entrenched stereotypes about Italian-Americans. [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore didn’t help with these stereotypes, believe me. I don’t agree with them, especially as an Italian-American myself, but they exist. That said, a name like [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_m]Emilio[/name_m] might be seen as low class or “less formal” here. I doubt the same stereotypes exist elsewhere. I personally think your children’s names are perfectly nice and would look just fine on a resume. [name_m]Just[/name_m] trying to maybe shed some light on where this woman could potentially be coming from.
I’m not really a fan of any of them. Sorry.
I think that they’re all a little too cutesy for my tastes.
I like your choices but I don’t think I would consider them either formal or informal. The lady who made the comment, however, made choices that I would consider quite formal. Not that it matters… and how rude of her to comment!
Your children’s names are lovely, historical, and formal. They’re nicknames are fun! And whoever said that obviously doesn’t know much about names. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t sweat it.
By the way, you have a lovely sibset.
Thank you about the sibset! We never actually took that into consideration (only because we hadn’t thought of it in the first place) for a while I thought the kids names looked very hippie, uncoordinated together but I’ve grown to love the royal/Italian influences and similarities ![]()
Maybe she really meant to say foreign, not formal. I certainly don’t think the names could be called informal in any way (other than the nicknames, of course), and they are lovely. I am from the US though, so …
I don’t understand how anybody could hear those names and think “informal” ?!
Beautiful names, and in my mind, very formal.
And [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] is an atrocious name, imo. I wouldn’t pay attention to her opinions. Your name choices are lovely.
[name_m]How[/name_m] very rude to say something like that to your face! The only two names that don’t seem very formal, or good for a CV, are [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_u]Paxton[/name_u]. I’m from the UK so maybe that’s why. You’ve made some lovely name choices like [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]!
Wait, where did [name_u]Paxton[/name_u] spring from? Before it was just [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] and [name_m]Emilio[/name_m], was it not? I’m wondering if troll?
