We picked [name]Ava[/name] [name]Maisie[/name] because I love both names. But I am thinking this might be a bad idea because it will be tempting to just start calling her [name]Maisie[/name] and I really really hate the idea of a child being named one name, but then going by the other, by the middle name. So I think I either need to commit to [name]Ava[/name] or commit to [name]Maisie[/name], which means maybe picking a different middle name. (rather than just flipflopping them). Who knows…maybe another girl is in my future and I can use the other name? I don’t know. But I have a whole long list of names I loved, but won’t use for some reason. I can pick a name I know I won’t call her by and put that in the middle.
What do you think? Leave it as [name]Ava[/name] [name]Maisie[/name]? Or pick one of the names with a different middle name?
This is a difficult situation. You may be planning on more children, but you don’t know if you’ll have another girl- would you feel like you missed the opportunity to use both names if you only have one daughter? If you did use both names and then had another girl, would you be able to find a name for her you love equally? Is it that you like [name]Maisie[/name] more, or just that you prefer it as a first? There’s a lot to think about.
You could call her by both her first and middle names. I don’t tend to like it when kids go by their middle either, but I don’t see a real problem with her going by [name]Ava[/name] [name]Maisie[/name] with close friends and family and [name]Ava[/name] at school. It’s only four syllables altogether, so it really isn’t any more difficult for her to be called [name]Ava[/name] [name]Maisie[/name] than [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Angelina[/name].
I picture a [name]Maisie[/name] as a cute little girl, maybe in a fairy outfit, dancing around, ever so adorable. I am not sure that I can picture her as a 40 yr old, trying to run for president. Or, if she is a lawyer, or doctor, and the name [name]Maisie[/name] and have people take her seriously enough to hire her. Of course, the child makes the name, but, sometimes, a name is little girly enough that she cannot move past it, or brutish enough, or whatever. I have had where I was picking a doctor and I found that I would be more likely to pick a [name]William[/name] than a [name]Duke[/name] or [name]Colton[/name] to hire. (just comparing male doctors there). So, will the name [name]Maisie[/name] hinder her if her goals in life include a power career? Then [name]Ava[/name]. I do like [name]Ava[/name] and it is still a pretty name, but just not as pretty as [name]Maisie[/name]. [name]Ava[/name] does not automatically bring up the precious cute little girl images. [name]Ava[/name] does not even really have a preset image for me, but I definitely think if I see Dr [name]Ava[/name], I would not be turned off by her name. So, I would pick [name]Ava[/name] for her name. But if [name]Maisie[/name] were in the middle, since I picture a little girl by that name, I can see myself just calling her [name]Maisie[/name] all the time and [name]Ava[/name] never really picking up, and then my child ends up tortured for life by having to go by her middle name and explain it all the time and correct paperwork and everything else. Plus, if I do ever have another little girl, I would likely use whatever name I do not use this time, the next time.
My brother was named [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Joshua[/name]–[name]Arthur[/name] being a family name tradition, but went by [name]Josh[/name] exclusively and it was such a pain in school and stuff to be registered under his full name, but to go by his middle name. I would definitely recommend finding a fn that you would call her rather her going by her mn… I do love the name though! Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide to do!
I figure I should just not put [name]Maisie[/name] in the middle because I will be too tempted to use it as her name and then she will never use the FN as her name and have to spend her life dealing with this. So, I guess it will be [name]Ava[/name] Something or [name]Maisie[/name] Something. [name]Maisie[/name] will be [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Marie[/name] likely, not sure on [name]Ava[/name] though, and I am leaning toward [name]Ava[/name] as a name.
Funny. [name]Ava[/name] [name]Maisie[/name] is a name that I had on my list a while ago. Like before I was pregnant. It was the only [name]Maisie[/name] combo i liked. Until…my mom said the name sounded like 'Amazing" which completely turned me off of it. I think you should use [name]Maisie[/name] as a FN. Here are some thoughts for MNs if you’re looking. [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Lucille[/name], [name]Maisie[/name] [name]June[/name], [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Adele[/name], [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Eve[/name] or [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Ella[/name]
I don’t see [name]Maisie[/name] aging well at all. [name]Ava[/name] isn’t my favorite and I actually prefer [name]Maisie[/name], I see [name]Ava[/name] being able to hold her own in an adult world. [name]Maisie[/name] is adorable, but she will always be adorable, and not professional, or grown up.
I agree with flick on [name]Maisie[/name] as a full name, but I do think it’s a great nn for [name]Margaret[/name]. Would you consider that? She can use [name]Maisie[/name] as her nn as a child and [name]Mae[/name] or [name]Margaret[/name] when she grows up.
I agree 100% about [name]Maisie[/name] being wayy too cutesy for an adult. It can be a nickname for pretty much any M name, though-- [name]Marie[/name], [name]Madeleine[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Marcella[/name], etc.
I’m going to go ahead and disagree with pretty much all of the previous posters. I think [name]Maisie[/name] ages just fine. Since I haven’t really met any little girls yet named [name]Maisie[/name], I don’t have a cutesy image of the name, and I don’t think it’s been a common enough nn for the general public to have a preconception of it either. I’m not sure if you’re in the U.S. or not, but our House Speaker, a high powered position if there ever was one, is named [name]Nancy[/name]. It’s never seemed to hold her back. Think of the names that a little [name]Maisy[/name] would be growing up with. [name]Kaylie[/name], [name]Haylie[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Bella[/name], etc… These are all super-feminine names, many with the ee ending. By the time [name]Maisie[/name] is all grown up and earning her doctorate, I really don’t think that people would be batting an eye at it. In fact the people likely to be doing the med school admissions will probably be named [name]Brittany[/name] and [name]Brandon[/name].
I think [name]Maisie[/name] ages just as well as [name]Hailey[/name], [name]Kylie[/name], and [name]Lacy[/name] do. Sure is cutesy but there is nothing from stopping her from going by [name]Mae[/name] as a nn either. I could def picture a doctor [name]Mae[/name]. (I actually could picture a doctor named just about anything) My name is a little too bubbly for my taste and ends in an -i, and I am going to graduate school to get my PhD. So yeah, I think [name]Maisie[/name] can be whatever her heart desires.
I personally prefer [name]Maisie[/name] to [name]Ava[/name]. [name]Ava[/name] is a nice name it is just SO popular. I literally cant count the number of Avas I have met. The popularity makes it loose some of its charm imo. Have you considered making [name]Maisie[/name] a nn?
