Bartholomew

Today while talking about the baby my boyfriend mentioned he would like to have a boy soon(!) since this time we are expecting a girl. A name nerd, I was like: “What would you name him them?” and he replied: “[name]Bartholomew[/name]”.
I was quiet surprised. My boyfriend has a very common name and everyone in his family do. But [name]Bartholomew[/name] is so pretty unusual. I never like it because of the Simpsons connection but the more I think about it the less I dislike it.
[name]Bartholomew[/name] has a vintage feel and I am a fan of old-fashioned names. Actually, as I remembered recently, it has kind of special meaning for me. Although, I am at loss for nicknames. I can’t stand [name]Bart[/name] but are there other names to shorten it? Lo, Tolly?
What are your thoughts on [name]Bartholomew[/name]? We are most likely naming our baby girl [name]Letitia[/name], so [name]Letitia[/name] and [name]Bartholomew[/name]? I would be grateful if you could suggest nickname and middle name ideas.

I honestly don’t like [name]Bartholomew[/name] but I think it goes quite well with [name]Letitia[/name]. I can’t think of any reasonable nicknames that go with it.

Batholomew [name]Elias[/name]
Batholomew [name]Charles[/name]
Batholomew [name]Felix[/name]
Batholomew [name]Isaac[/name]
Batholomew [name]Thomas[/name]

[name]Bartholomew[/name] isn’t really to my taste. It’s quite a hefty, somewhat unfriendly sounding name on it’s own, with a bit of a pretentious feeling. And that’s without the [name]Bart[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] association, and with that association then the name takes on a completely different personality, specifically that of [name]Bart[/name]. If I was to come up with a NN to go with [name]Bartholomew[/name] (and it is a name that’d require a NN), I’d make lots of effort to avoid the NN [name]Bart[/name] (way too [name]Simpson[/name]-y… even though I have always loved The Simpsons immensely). Tolly is an interesting option. Feels friendly, though not quite intuitive as a NN for [name]Bartholomew[/name].

I love [name]Bartholomew[/name]. It’s quite an undiscovered gem from the Bible so I’m so pleased that someone is considering it. It’s a great blend of classic refinement and quirky cool. I could care less about [name]Bart[/name] [name]Simpson[/name]. Tolly is a spunky nn and [name]Bartholomew[/name] goes so well with [name]Letitia[/name]. I would choose something short as a mn choice.

[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Tate[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Reid[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Finn[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Dean[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Vaughn[/name]
Bartholmew [name]Shane[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Grant[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Hale[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Heath[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]John[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Zane[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Rhys[/name]

Thank you all ladies! I was really interested to get your feedback. I see it’s not everybody’s cup of tea but I think we need to think away the Simpsons and other TV shows. They use some great names there([name]Oscar[/name], [name]Jarret[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name], [name]Constance[/name]) but the names should not be tied.
I love almost every middle name suggestions, especially [name]James[/name](my all-time favorite), [name]August[/name](my GP), [name]Silas[/name], [name]Elias[/name], [name]Felix[/name], [name]Jack[/name](another long-time love), [name]Finn[/name] and [name]Heath[/name](loving this one recently).
@mischa: that’s great there are some people who think we should reconsider [name]Bartholomew[/name] and I am glad you like it.
@javad: that’s the thing - I don’t like Simpsons… But I think we won’t call him [name]Bart[/name] anyway.
I’ve done some research and found [name]Art[/name], [name]Olly[/name] and [name]Tom[/name] all derived from [name]Bartholomew[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think they will make the name for child-friendly and less [name]Simpson[/name]-y?

[name]Bartholomew[/name] is actually quite fun! I really like it and it sounds very cute with [name]Letitia[/name]. Also, my first thought was not “[name]Bart[/name] [name]Simpson[/name]” so I don’t think you should worry about that association. If you actually used it on your little boy, people who knew him would stop relating it to the Simpsons and only think of your little [name]Bartholomew[/name] when they heard it.

I love the way [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]August[/name] and [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jack[/name] sound. I think a more spunky, “kid-friendly” middle name would work very well with [name]Bartholomew[/name], and both [name]August[/name] and [name]Jack[/name] seem to match those guidelines to me. [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jack[/name] would have to be my favourite.

As for nick names, I think [name]Olly[/name] sounds really sweet. It’s very in right now because of [name]Oliver[/name], so I think it would be a very cute choice. [name]Art[/name] is also very cute, or perhaps [name]Artie[/name]? I don’t really like [name]Tom[/name] though. It’s very boring and common, and if you’re going to go the distance and name your child [name]Bartholomew[/name], I think giving him a plain nick name like [name]Tom[/name] would be a bit of a waste of an awesome name. So something more unique and fun like [name]Olly[/name] or [name]Artie[/name] would be my choice!

Good luck!

Thank you, heidieliza. I feel like I am leaning towards [name]Olly[/name] too:)

I actually really like it. It’s cool and sophisticated. I don’t know about middles, but for nicknames I would try:

Lo
Mew
[name]Barry[/name]
[name]Olly[/name]
[name]Art[/name]
Tolly
[name]Bartley[/name]

It’s funny because I’ve been thinking about this name a lot lately. My dream (yet sadly pretty unusal) twin boys would be [name]Bartholomew[/name] and [name]Balthazar[/name], but I dislike the thought of [name]Bart[/name] so I’ve always discounted [name]Bartholomew[/name]. However when researching the name I found the nickname Tolly - which, while it’s not exactly the most natural of nicknames, works as a nice alternative if you dislike [name]Bart[/name]. I would definitely do something short in the middle name place, [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]James[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Keith[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Dane[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Lee[/name] etc etc.

I surprised myself in liking [name]Bartholomew[/name] I think it pairs really well with [name]Letitia[/name] but agree with others- a short, plainer name in the middle spot would work best: [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Luke[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]George[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jude[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Max[/name]. [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jack[/name] is my favourite from others’ suggestions.

I love [name]Olly[/name] and [name]Art[/name]/[name]Artie[/name] as nicknames! There’s Barty too, but given your dislike of [name]Bart[/name] it’s probably a no-go

Boys are weird. [name]Bartholomew[/name]? It’s too Biblical for me, but I can (maybe) see the appeal. I think Dantea’s nickname suggestions were awesome, I’m personally incredibly bad and lousy at nicknames so I’m not going to suggest any. I’ve never watched The Simpsons so that’s not an association for me, but I know most people have seen it.

You’re into two middles right?

[name]Letitia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Jane[/name] & …
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Otto[/name] [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Enzo[/name] [name]Lloyd[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Kit[/name] [name]Xavier[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Grey[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Rupert[/name] [name]Blaise[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Edmund[/name] [name]Heath[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Wilfred[/name] [name]Rhett[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name] [name]Cole[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Lawrence[/name] [name]Kay[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Maksim[/name] [name]Brett[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Fraser[/name] [name]Cliff[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jasper[/name] [name]Dune[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Douglas[/name] [name]Moor[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Alfred[/name] [name]Bay[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Conrad[/name] [name]Beck[/name]

I absolutely love [name]Bartholomew[/name], but don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to use it.

Tolly is my nn of choice, it has more charm to it then [name]Ollie[/name].

I think [name]Bartholomew[/name] is cute! I do agree that [name]Olly[/name] is probably the best nick name, since you dont like [name]Bart[/name].
Good [name]Luck[/name]!

Thank you all ladies! Coming back to PC to get that much feedback was great.
@charlieandperry: [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Jude[/name] is wonderful! I really love [name]Jude[/name] in the middl name spot:)
@ottilie: I haven’t watched the Simpsons either but I sometimes see the show advertised. Anyway, I think there are much worse associations. And I love your middle name suggestions, they really fit my style! Thank you so much. Bartolomew [name]Wilfred[/name] [name]Rhett[/name] is just perfection, going on my list!
@maggiemary: I never thought it was an option but my BF says it’s his favorite name. Men are weird, you know:) Actually, I think it’s growing on me. And I really love the ideas of calling little [name]Bartholomew[/name] [name]Olly[/name] or Tolly.
